From Names We Know To Those We Might Not: A Review Of Our Top Ten Educational Theorists' Contributions To The Literature And The Practical Implications Of Their Work, George Hrivnak, Amy Kenworthy

George Hrivnak

This interactive session reviews the work of our "Top Ten" seminal educational theorists and contextualizes their most significant contributions in terms of their potential to enhance the teaching effectiveness of session participants. A variety of well-known and not-so-well-known theorists were deliberately chosen in a effort to make the session attractive to both experts and relative neophytes of the learning/education literature. The selected scholars vary from those well known in the management education literature (e.g. John Dewey, Jean Piaget) to those who are perhaps less well-known or appreciated (e.g. Lev Vygotsky, Robert Gagne, Paulo Freire, Malcolm Knowles, and Jack Mezirow).

The Teaching Of Food Technology In Secondary Schools, Angela Turner, Kurt W. Seemann Jul 2010

The Teaching Of Food Technology In Secondary Schools, Angela Turner, Kurt W. Seemann

Dr Angela Turner

This paper presents a summary of findings from a recent Australian study that investigated perceptions of ‘food technology’ as viewed by teachers in secondary schools compared to a wider professional view. Maintaining and fostering a coherent and accurate perception throughout the food technology career, from school student to professional undergraduate studies, is critical for both the evolution of the field of knowledge and the need to keep up with increasing world demand for food technologists and food innovation. While ‘food technology’ has been well established in most Australian secondary school curriculum, a contradiction has emerged between the ‘school view’ of …

A Coastal Environment Field And Laboratory Activity For An Undergraduate Geomorphology Course, Jean Ellis, Paul Rindfleisch Jul 2010

A Coastal Environment Field And Laboratory Activity For An Undergraduate Geomorphology Course, Jean Ellis, Paul Rindfleisch

Jean Taylor Ellis

A field and laboratory exercise for an undergraduate geomorphology class is described that focuses on the beach. The project requires one day of fieldwork and two laboratory sessions. In the field, students measure water surface fluctuations (waves) with a pressure sensor, survey beach profiles, collect sediment samples, and observe the beach state. In the laboratory, students wash and dry sediments, complete a grain size analysis, and determine sediment volumes. Students produce a report that includes analysis of wave data and beach profiles and a discussion of their findings.

A Framework For Computational Thinking Across The Curriculum, Ljubomir Perkovi´C, Amber Settle, Sungsoon Hwang, Joshua Jones Jun 2010

A Framework For Computational Thinking Across The Curriculum, Ljubomir Perkovi´C, Amber Settle, Sungsoon Hwang, Joshua Jones

Sungsoon Hwang

We describe a framework for implementing computational thinking in a broad variety of general education courses. The framework is designed to be used by faculty without formal training in information technology in order to understand and integrate computational thinking into their own general education courses. The framework includes examples of computational thinking in a variety of general education courses, as well as sample in-class activities, assignments, and other assessments for the courses. The examples in the different courses are related and differentiated using categories taken from Denning Great Principles of Computing, so that similar types of computational thinking appearing in …

Clarifying Sustainable Food Technology Futures Through Technacy Genre Theory (Presentation), Angela Turner, Kurt W. Seemann

Dr Angela Turner

In order for education systems to nurture a culture of innovation and sustainability in the school staff room, this research asserts that far greater clarity and classification methods need to be employed to define exactly what the subject matter and learner attributes in schools are meant to address compared to the wider world demands upon it.
