In late 2019, a joint working group between the Teaching and Learning and Scholarship, Research and Creative Activities (SRCA) Standing Committees of Senate was struck to explore curriculum-based SRCA across the College with the aim of establishing best practices, identifying needs, and capturing the breadth and depth of SRCA work linked to curriculum. The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic shifted much of our teaching and learning online and created challenges for conducting and supporting SRCA linked to curriculum.

This presentation will briefly highlight key research findings from a Research Project on the Integration of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in PowerPoint Artifacts in an Ontario College Trades Course that was submitted to Ontario Tech graduate program in Fall 2020. The benefit of reflection was identified as important finding in the research; the presenters will present through a faculty case study, the benefits of reflection and how people can start immediately incorporating into their practice. Additionally, opportunities to learn about concrete UDL strategies that can be integrated in PowerPoint instructional material will be reviewed.

In this session, participants will be introduced to practical strategies for designing engaging courses in SLATE. Participants will learn why we design for inclusion with a focus not only on applicable legislation but also on how unintended barriers impede the learning experience for students. Faculty will learn how to enhance the navigation of their courses from the student perspective, and how to ensure their course materials are more accessible to all learners.
