Institutional And International Community Development: World Learning/Sit Case Study, Rebecca Hovey

In this workshop we posed the question: How to engage with/build partnerships or solidarity with communities in Global Service-Learning? This case study describes SIT Study Abroad programs as a form of community-based education: integrating community members as mentors, educators and part of the local “faculty”. This has profound implications in terms of academic content, knowledge generation, who benefits from the projects and accumulated knowledge gained from field service, and the global citizen responsibilities of the home university in terms of fair intellectual property and labor.

Academic Librarian Integration Into Teacher Education Distance Learning Programs, Brenna Helmstutler

Having convenient, instant access to electronic library resources in academia is excellent as research can be conducted literally anywhere and at anytime; however, a level of user self-direction is required for optimal results, creating the need for librarian interaction to guide the user towards acquiring this self-direction most effectively. As more institutions add online degree programs, it is essential that librarians are integrated within so that participating students have access to the same (or at least, equivalent) library resources and services as those who are on campus, and also develop sound research skills for information literacy acquisition. Although librarians have …

South Africa has undergone major changes in the school curriculum. At the same time, international emphasis on the importance of Information Literacy has found reflections locally in many calls for the development of school libraries (e.g. Arnold, 2002: 178), but has remained a problem in the actual implementation. This is also reflected in initial teacher training which has moved Information Literacy to a skill of the teacher, rather than an essential part of the curriculum that they have to teach.
This paper first looks briefly at the changes in national curricula in South Africa, and then at the current curriculum, …

Evaluating primary enrollment figures for rural children particularly girls against sex ration for newborns and NGO reports of lack of birth registrations of girls (hei hukou), produces a net primary enrollment rate (49%) half of the official data (98%). Poverty data and One-Child Policy fines explain the context of the lower enrollment rates.

Information Technology Services and the University Library partnered to build an Internet2-enabled Learning Commons (LC) at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. The project team now extends the campus partnership model to include student and faculty users in collaboratively applying Scandinavian style co-design methodologies for physical and virtual learning and teaching environments. The interactive design approach was tested from January to June 2005 with funding from a U.S. Office of Naval Research Internet2 MiniGrant subcontract award. The project evaluated the efficacy of an interactive design/redesign methodology for encouraging user-driven, boundary-crossing information exchange and knowledge creation. Involving graduate and …
