This paper examines the elementary teacher’s role as a moral educator. The context is the Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) in New Mexico. I have investigated the Character Counts! program, the moral education program which has been adopted and utilized by the school district. I describe the goals and rationale behind the Character Counts! program, as written about in existing documentation and literature. In addition, I have conducted interviews with individuals in APS in charge of creating and disseminating such information. Clinical supervision is a coherent process for teacher evaluation. A significant investment of time and training for teachers and administrators is necessary to successfully implement the clinical supervision model. A peer coaching program presents the opportunity of improving upon the clinical supervision model and establishing a lasting staff development program. The Critical Friends Group model, developed by the Coalition of Essential Schools, provides the structure which fosters collegiality, professional development, and improved student learning. The success of a Critical Friends Group peer coaching program relies on the leadership of the principal through active participation, financing, and modeling professional collaboration.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the activities, funding, accountability, and evaluation of selected teaching and learning centers relative to the professional development of faculty in four-year public institutions of higher education. Using a qualitative research design, in-depth interviews were conducted with directors of four teaching and learning centers. The purpose of this study was to determine Old Dominion University adjunct faculty members' perceptions of their professional development needs. A three-round Delphi technique was employed as the primary research tool. An initial stratified sample of 120 current adjunct faculty members was selected by college associate deans. The research was conducted with 57 adjunct faculty members completing all three rounds of the study.

The first research question was to ascertain Old Dominion University adjunct faculty members' perceptions of their professional development needs toward teaching for an urban university. Sixteen development needs were derived representing all of the inputs from respondents. …

The empirical study discussed in this book was conducted in the Sunrise classrooms at Coombabah State School, Queensland in 1991-92, in which each student had their own laptop computer. Part I provides a theoretical framework for learning and teaching with computers. Part II deals with issues relating to the acquisition of computer literacy. Part III describes the empirical study conducted with 115 Year 6 and Year 7 students, and Part IV deals with issues relating to the professional development of teachers who teach students with computers and with the evaluation of computer software by teachers.

Towards Teacher Efficacy: A Handbook For The Implementation And Development Of A Peer Coaching Program, Roy M. Abshire

The relationship between successful implementation of the peer coaching process and the enhancing of teacher efficacy, student learning, and improvement of school climate was studied. Also examined was the assumption that successful implementation of peer coaching will require specific administrative support. The results of the study show support for a peer coaching program's ability to positively affect teacher efficacy, student learning, and the school climate. A handbook aiding the implementation and development of a peer coaching program is provided.

The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze roles, responsibilities, and professional preparation of high school department chairs by surveying persons who presently fulfill department chair responsibilities at the high school level in Grant County, Washington. A sample of 31 high school department chairs was surveyed using a survey instrument covering the roles, responsibilities, and preparation of high school department chairs. The results indicated professional preparation and training for the high school department chair were almost nonexistent; duties were not clearly defined; and individual competencies had no apparent relationship to the roles and responsibilities that were required of …

Staff Development Guidelines For Effective Staff Development Programs, Glenn Spinnie

The staff development programs recommended through literature and programs in actual practice in the state of Washington were studied. Thirty-two school districts responded to a questionnaire based on important findings in the literature. The results showed strengths and weaknesses in staff development programs. This study did indicate that staff development programs in the state of Washington had many of the elements of effective staff development as set forth in the literature.

A Clinical Supervision And Peer Coaching Model To Improve Instructional Effectiveness, Arthur Lee Galloway

The interrelationship of clinical supervision and peer coaching strategies to improve instructional effectiveness were studied. A peer coaching in-service program, detailing coaching procedures and activities, was developed and implemented in the social studies department at Mount Si High School. The results of the program showed that peer coaching can be utilized by teachers to assume greater leadership and responsibility in the area of instructional improvement.
