Let's Talk About Homesickness, Sarah Jackson, Stephanie Lott
Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)
Regardless of how excited students may be about college life, even the most independent freshmen can find themselves battling homesickness. Homesickness is not a black and white phenomenon; rather, it is best classified by the degree of homesickness one feels. Homesickness is very easily misinterpreted by some as a student missing his/her bed, home, etc. However, homesickness is best classified by a longing for what was familiar, what was comfortable, and what was normal. As thousands of freshmen flock to college each year, they are faced with a myriad of choices and situations that are not normal, familiar, or comfortable. …

The College of Education and Behavioral Sciences (CEBS) received funds to create a task force to determine the best strategies to ensure that students have an opportunity to understand their discipline in a global context. The CEBS Global Pathways Initiative Committee created a generic module on globalization principles that can be integrated into any course in all program areas. These curriculum materials provide a basic introduction to existing knowledge regarding cultural competence. They are designed to provide instructors with accurate information that can easily be integrated into existing undergraduate and graduate-level courses, including courses in psychology and education. Counseling & Student Affairs Faculty Publications
This study explored the impact a modified TC (Therapeutic Community) had on reducing institutional disorder as documented by institutional write-ups. The number of institutional write-ups exhibited by clients participating in a modified TC was compared with the number of write-ups exhibited by inmates in five non-treatment units over a four-year period. ANOVA (analysis of variance) revealed that the number of write-ups exhibited by clients in the TC was significantly lower than the number exhibited by inmates in the other five dorms (F(4, 24) = 5.61, p < 0.002).Further, when examined by category of offense (major/minor), it was found that the write-ups of clients in the TC generally were not as severe as those exhibited by inmates in the general prison population. The implications of these findings for corrections administrators are discussed and specific recommendations are provided.

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)
Gifted and talented students become accustomed to exhibiting academic excellence throughout their K-12 careers; so much so that they learn to crave the intellectual stimulation and intrigue that is characteristic of their curricular experiences. Upon entering the realm of higher education, these same students are faced with a newfound independence and must make the decision of whether or not to continue their pursuits of specialized education. Students that are active in and outside the classroom during their collegiate career are more likely to complete their degree programs as proposed by Astin’s Theory of Student Involvement (Astin, 1999). Therefore, getting involved …

Cheating & Academic Misconduct: What Do You Have To Lose? [Brochure And Video], Cady Denton
Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)
Academic misconduct is an issue plaguing college campuses. Academic misconduct can be clearly defined (plagiarism, copying the work of another) or more ambiguous (sharing work, turning in one piece of work for multiple assignments) (Schmelkin, Gilbert, Spencer, Pincus, & Silva, 2008). McCabe and Trevino (1996) state that cheating has become more prevalent, and tactics widely vary. Reasons for academic misconduct can range from stress and poor time management to a compliance with suggested social norms (ETS and the Ad Council, 1999). While academic dishonesty may seem like the “easy way out,” it can result in serious consequences affecting one’s academic …

Working in college is more common than some people may realize. According to the United States Census Bureau, 72% of undergraduate students and 82% of graduate students work during college. There are various reasons why students decide to work in college. For some the increase in tuition has forced them to work to pay tuition or other educational related fees. Others may work in college in the form of a work study program or internship to gain career experience or for money to pay for entertainment. Some students work to support their families and pay for living expenses thus falling …

Research & Program Evaluation (CNS598)
This qualitative study aims to explore the reasons why African American students have low involvement in the Western Kentucky University Honors College program and its’ initiatives. Findings show that this low level of involvement is the consequence of a perceived lack of diversity within the Honors College, a lack of diversity in Honors College recruitment initiatives and materials, a feeling of not being accepted by their Caucasian peers, high levels of participation in and commitment to activities outside the Honors College community, and no minority community within the Honors College. Accordingly, African American Honors College students do not have high …

Academically underprepared college students, i.e., those identified as needing developmental (remedial) English, mathematics and reading courses in order to maximize their potential for academic success at college-level studies, were provided with the opportunity to rent, for a minimal, subsidized fee, mini-computers bundled with digital course materials (e-books). The academic aptitude of the students who participated in the study was assessed when they entered the program, and their academic performance was assessed at the end of the semester in which they were provided with these resources. The aptitude, performance and retention of program participants were then compared with those of similarly …

Advising Style Perceptions And Preferences Of Students And Advisors, Gladys Patricia Brown Jordan
Dissertations
The best style of advising to offer students has been questioned over and over. The literature review revealed uncertainty related to national surveys of advisors and students and encouraged smaller institutional reviews.
The Academic Advising Inventory (Winston and Sandor, 1984b), was administered to a proportionate to size random sample of advisors (faculty and professional) and then to the advisees of the advisors who responded to the survey. Variables of interest for advisors included age, gender, type (faculty or professional), and college. Variables of interest for students included gender, ethnicity, age, classification, generational status, and GPA.
