Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)
Across the country, incoming students are bombarded with questions and choices the minute they apply for college. Their biggest decision (and arguably their most important) is their choice of major. For some students, it may be a no-brainer, but for most, choosing a major is a difficult decision that requires more thought and guidance than many people realize. Many students are pressured into choosing a major right away by high school advisors, parents, college administration, and friends. According to a study conducted by Matthew Foraker from Western Kentucky University, students who completed one or two semesters of college before declaring …

With this video, we seek to give students an idea of what to expect before, during, and after studying abroad, while pointing students to various resources to help them along the way.

Conceptualizing Brotherhood And Sisterhood: Does First-Generation And Or Being The First Greek Affiliating Family Member Matter?, Krista Rosner, Kaitlin Frazier, Alexandria Kennedy
Research Methods in Student Affairs (CNS 594)
The research currently in the field regarding brotherhood and sisterhood does not presently take into account first generation students who belong to greek letter societies and organizations. This lack of information results in the opportunity to raise awareness and understanding for this unique student population. First generation students are disproportionately members from underrepresented groups (Engle, 2007). They are also entering college less academically prepared (Choy, 2001). They are also more likely to work while in college (Saenz et al., 2007). These things in combination show inconsistency in the knowledge we have. While we already know that first-generation college students need …

Getting Involved On A College Campus, Laura Johnson, Amanda Jarrett
Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)
According to Astin’s Theory of Involvement, what a student gains from being involved is directly proportional to both the qualitative and quantitative amount of involvement (Astin, 1999). In addition, research has proven that there is a positive correlation in student involvement with retention and academics (Kuh and Pike, 2005). Getting involved on campus is an ongoing process, and it is important for students to utilize a university’s recourses to help guide them in the possibilities. A university’s Student Activities office is just one of many areas on campus that students can find a myriad of ways to get involved. Students …

Mentoring: The College Freshman Female Perspective, Catrice L. Reese
Dissertations
Grant-Vallone, Reid, Umali, and Pohlert (2004) outlined how students who regularly take advantage of student support services, mentoring, or academic support programing opportunities are more likely to accomplish their academic goals. Postsecondary institutions are responsible for providing innovative educational experiences to students. Proactively identifying key delimiting factors that inhibit student achievement can increase the persistence and retention rates of critical populations. Mentoring relationships are especially crucial to the academic achievement and successful matriculation of first-year freshman students. Many college students are introduced to a wide variety of challenges – ones they are going to have to deal with on their own. Most college students are moving away from their parent’s household and realizing the responsibilities of an independent lifestyle. Along with an independent lifestyle, college students are particularly prone to stress, and the majority experience stress because of unpredictable academic commitments, financial burdens, poor eating habits, and lack of time management skills. According to Jenny Haubenreiser, President of the American College Health Association, “Stay alert to stress, anxiety and emotions. Demanding academics, too many social activities (or …
