Effects Of Rational-Emotive Group Therapy Upon Anxiety And Self-Esteem Of Learning Disabled Children, Donna J. Meyer
Dissertations
Previous research has indicated the effectiveness of rational-emotive education techniques in reducing anxiety and building self-esteem with regular classroom children. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of rational-emotive group therapy on anxiety and self-esteem of learning-disabled children. One hundred ten learning-disabled children (ages 8-13) were assigned to one of three experimental conditions: rational-emotive therapy (N=32), recreational-educational programming (N=31), or no-contact (N=47). Within the two experimental treatments that actually met, groups of seven to nine members, similar in chronological age, were formed. The rational-emotive groups received therapy based on rational-emotive theory. The recreational-educational programming groups engaged in …

A Survey Of Science Instruction In Elementary Learning Disability Resource Rooms In Iowa Area Education Agency # 1, Kevin M. Anderson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Since the initiation of special resource rooms for learning disabled youngsters several years ago, many special educators have concentrated their instructional routine on the skills of reading and mathematics. A subject area such as science has been viewed as a topic suited more for the regular classroom than the resource room. When science has been moved into the resource room, research shows it has generally been on a tutorial basis, helping the child catch up to other students. This study investigated the amount and quality of science instruction present in elementary learning disability resource rooms. It involved the 53 public …

A Procedure For Monitoring Individualized Education Programs For The Handicapped, George T.L. Holt
Dissertations
Public Law 94-142 mandates that each handicapped child have an individualized education program (IEP) which must be based upon the unique needs of the child. Federal legislation requires that IEPs be developed and implemented if state and local education agencies are to receive federal funds. A review of literature indicated that the procedures currently being used to monitor the IEP mandate do not have documented validity or reliability. The purposes of this investigation were to develop, validate, establish reliability, and field test the utility of a checklist designed to monitor IEPs.
To establish content validity, recognized individuals in the area …

The Existence Of Generalization Abilities In Five Aphasics, Jo Ellen Gilbert
Masters Theses
This study was designed to determine if generalization, the facilitation of performance on untrained items through training of related skills, can be evidenced in the language behavior of an aphasic population. Five aphasic subjects were drawn from a patient population at a Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Michigan. Each subject was presented with 25 unfamiliar pictures utilizing five cueing techniques: whole word repetition, first syllrble cue, sentence completion, written word, and a control of no input. This investigation focused on the examination of the effectiveness and costs of instructional delivery in using programmed tutorial materials by trained high school paraprofessionals to instruct learners attending the elementary self-contained and resource rooms. Forty tutees, divided equally into experimental and control groups, were administered two pre and posttest measures, the E-B Beginning Reading Placement Test and the Woodcock Reading Mastery Test (WRMT). Tutees in experimental groups received tutorial instruction from the paraprofessional tutors 25 minutes daily over the ten-week treatment period. An analysis of covariance was computed on the two measures to compare the academic performance between the experimental …

State and federal education of the handicapped legislation provides numerous safeguards to ensure appropriate educational opportunity. Parents are expected to be active participants. Schools are obligated to inform parents of their responsibilities, rights and procedures to be followed. The disclosure is lengthy and complicated.
