Self-Concept In Home-Schooling Children, John Wesley Taylor V Jan 1986

Self-Concept In Home-Schooling Children, John Wesley Taylor V

Dissertations

The home school appears to be in a renaissance. This national study sought to provide an empirical base upon which to formulate viable decisions regarding homeschooling children. The study considered homeschoolers in grades four through twelve. The randomized sample yielded 224 qualified participants.

Conclusions include the following:

1. The self-concept of the homeschoolers was significantly higher (p<.001) than that of the conventionally schooled population on all scales of the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale. Half of the homeschoolers scored at or above the 91st percentile on the global scale.

2. Insofar as self-concept is a reflector of socialization, it appears that few homeschoolers are socially deprived.

3. The self-concept of the homeschoolers decreases significantly (p<.01) as age and grade level rise.

4. The factors of gender, number of siblings, locale of residence, prior conventional schooling, number of years …

Premarital Preparation : An Educational Content Design For Seventh-Day Adventists In The United States, Roger H. Ferris

Dissertations

Problem. The church participates in the marriage process by providing its facilities, performing the ceremony, and establishing marriage supportive norms. Increasing divorce rates produce calls for premarital preparationefforts by the church. It was the purpose of the present study to develop a validated educational content design for Seventh-day Adventists useful to the church in preparing couples for marriage.

Method. An analysis of the relevant literature from religious and secular authorities was made to isolate factors deemed important to adequate premarital preparation. These factors were then rank-ordered.

A random sample of seven hundred presently married Seventh-day Adventists from the northwestern, midwestern, …

Occupational Stereotypes Among Haitian High School Seniors : Their Relative Importance To Career Aspirations In Relation To Selected Variables And The Implications For Educational Leadership, Michel Lamartine Porcena

Dissertations

Problem

One of the more important decisions confronting all young people across all cultures is the choice of an occupation. In recognition of this condition, researchers have suggested many factors as being influential in the career aspirations of students. Among these factors, occupational stereotypes have received a great deal of attention. Since no study was found in the literature either to determine the nature of occupational stereotypes among Haitian students or to compare their relative importance in relation to selected variables, it was the purpose of this study to determine the nature of occupational stereotypes and their relative importance to …

Dissertations

Problem. Anne Roe claims that occupational interests and person orientation develop to a significant extent from the complex interaction of family emotional relationships in the formative years. She describes three basic family patters (Accepting, Concentrating, and Avoiding) of needs satisfaction as antecedents to the two types of person oriention within eight occupational group classifications. Research has mostly failed to support her global occupational predictions. This study explored the specific predictions for a General Culture Group.

Method. A sample of 298 subjects was used from the population of 311 teachers in training at the University of Montemorelos, N. L., Mexico. …

A Study Of The Self-Esteem Of Delinquent Male Adolescents And The Perceived Degree Of Their Parents' Child-Rearing Practices, Dayton Chin Chong

Dissertations

Problem. Many developmental psychologists are concerned about how parents' child-rearing practices influence adolescents' self-esteem, for self-esteem provides one of the foundations for the development of personality. Is it possible that parents' child-rearing practices contribute to the development of a low self-esteem which in turn influences behavior? This study was conducted to determine the relationship of self-esteem of delinquent male adolescents to the perceived degree of their parents' child-rearing practices.

Method. The study involved 132 delinquent male adolescents who matriculated during the fall semester of 1979 at Starr Commonwealth, Albion, Michigan. The males ranged from 12 to 18 years of age, …
