A Classroom Savonius Windmill, William G. Hoffman

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The Savonius or S-rotor windmill was introduced to the United States in 1924. The powershaft is located in the vertical plane rather than horizontally as in the traditional bladed Stuart windmill. This has several benefits. The windmill does not need a wind direction seeking vane since it doesn't matter from which direction the wind is blowing. Also, power is available at the base of the mill rather than at the top of the tower. The Savonius mill is also less easily damaged by high winds than the traditional windmill.

The report indicated a 4.7 percent decrease in science achievement scores for 17 year-old high school students since 1969. During the same time period, 2.5 percent and 1.4 percent declines were reported for 13 and 9 year olds in science, respectively. Declines were observed to be greater in the physical than the biological sciences.

Building Rapport And Changing Attitudes, Owen Primavera Jan 1979

Building Rapport And Changing Attitudes, Owen Primavera

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

During the past few years there seems to be a growing apathy on the part of high school students towards education. It seems that many are weaker in the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics and could care less about their progress. Why do students feel this way about education and what can educators do to improve the situation?

The Need For A Philosophical Approach In The Teaching Of Science, Everett F. Morris

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In his paper, Slock (1977) commented upon a different view of what science is and how it operates. It has been my experience that prospective secondary science teachers are extremely deficient in this area. Perhaps, it is not a different view that is needed as much as a definite viewpoint that is needed.

Utilization Of Wave Energy, Walter R. Schmitt

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

When looking upon an aroused sea, many wonder how this seemingly large energy resource could be used. Inventive minds have gone to work on devices of all kinds - pumps and bellows, buoys, barges, and ramps, surface and subsurface siting, using alloys and plastics, etc. -generally based on mechanical or hydraulic principles. They would probably all work (if somebody would build them), but none thus far have been shown to do so profitably.

'"As a professional in this business of testmaking, I am much more aware of the limitations of testing than most laymen. Achievement tests such as ours are designed as tools to help teachers do their jobs. Scores from them cannot be used as final judgments on anything - not children, not teachers, not schools and certainly not American education in general."
