Mandatory Continuing Education: Does It Really Protect Society From Incompetent Health Professionals, Patricia A. Mcpartland Sep 1990

Mandatory Continuing Education: Does It Really Protect Society From Incompetent Health Professionals, Patricia A. Mcpartland

RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)

Although the focus is narrow, this article argues that, in the face of short half-lives of current knowledge, continuing education requirements are needed and suggests possible improvements in the way that continuing education is implemented. While the issue is not explicitly addressed, readers might ponder whether such requirements might be profitably extended to other disciplines.

Minerva At Large: A Study Of The Leadership Styles And Educational Philosophies Of The Department Of Education Secretaries, Mark Y. Herring May 1990

Minerva At Large: A Study Of The Leadership Styles And Educational Philosophies Of The Department Of Education Secretaries, Mark Y. Herring

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1979, President James E. Carter signed into law the thirteenth Cabinet-level office, the Department of Education. Although the United States has had a department, bureau, or office of education since 1867, the newly established Department of Education gave education a seat at the Cabinet table. Since that time, four individuals have served as secretaries: Shirley M. Hufstedler, Terrel H. Bell, William J. Bennett, and Lauro F. Cavazos. Examined in this study were the importance of leadership styles and educational philosophies as exhibited by the four secretaries. A tertiary concern viewed the role of the federal government in education. Leadership …

Belize Tertiary School Libraries: A Needs-Assessment Survey, Mary Margaret (Peggy) Wright Jan 1990

Belize Tertiary School Libraries: A Needs-Assessment Survey, Mary Margaret (Peggy) Wright

DLPS Faculty Publications

Having come to the end of a ten-year study of Belize developing libraries, the Belize government asked for a survey of all the tertiary school libraries within the country. The government purpose centered around the number and caliber of staff, book/journal collections, student use and adequacy of the facility housing the collections. When adequacy of any of the above failed criteria, they asked for recommendations for improvement within the eleven schools visited. Thanks to the United States Information Agency’s Academic Specialist Award, the study, followed by training workshops, took place from February 3-6, 1990. Text of the entire study follows.

Evaluating Honors Programs: An Outcomes Approach, Jacqueline Reihman, Sara Varhus, William R. Whipple Jan 1990

Evaluating Honors Programs: An Outcomes Approach, Jacqueline Reihman, Sara Varhus, William R. Whipple

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs

The evaluation of academic programs has always been a complex and sensitive issue. Evaluations are undertaken to determine which programs will survive in an era of straitened economic circumstances, to gain or maintain accreditation, or to tell us how our programs can be improved. They may apply some normative standard of quality, 0r address an academic program's unique situation and mission. They may include the following: review of budget, evaluation of staff, description of the program's operation, demonstration of faculty and student satisfaction, or measures of what students have learned. They may use standardized or locally developed tests of achievement; …

The Pine Mountain Valley Rural Community Project 1934-1946, Nick Marino Jan 1990

The Pine Mountain Valley Rural Community Project 1934-1946, Nick Marino

Theses and Dissertations

During the Great Depression New Deal planners attributed much of the nation's unemployment problem to automation in the workplace. It was believed that structural economic changes had dislocated millions of city workers permanently. To get these people off relief, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration established about 100 rural industrial communities across America. By providing the opportunity to develop rural communities based upon modern farming and agriculturally-related industries, dislocated workers would be brought back to the land as productive citizens. One of the most unique of these rural industrial communities was established in Pine Mountain Valley, Georgia. Being near President Roosevelt's …

Museum Studies In Collection Management, Hugh H. Genoways Dec 1989

Museum Studies In Collection Management, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Programs Information

First paragraph:

At the workshop on "Collection Resources for the 1990's" held in Washington, D.C., October 1988, one of the identified needs for institutions was for additional trained collection management staff (Hoagland and Mabee, ASC Newsletter 16(6): 9, 1988). There are few academic programs that provide training in the management of biological, geological, and anthropological collections. Because this is an identified need for the 1990's, the question arises: "Are we able to meet this need?" and, if we are not currently in a position to do so, "What must be done in the future to meet this need?"

Conclusions

Currently, …
