Seven Ouachita Baptist University students recently were selected for the 2017 Arkansas Intercollegiate Band (AIB). They will perform Friday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m. in Hot Springs, Ark. The concert is free and open to the public.

The AIB is an honor band composed of students who represent college and university bands across Arkansas. Band directors submit nominations, and a selection committee chooses students based on instrumentation needs. The band will meet on Thursday, Feb. 16, for the first time to rehearse and will present the concert on Friday. The rehearsal and concert are presented in conjunction with the Arkansas …

The team of Jake Edmondson, Cole Jester and Evan McKinnon won the 8th annual Ouachita Baptist University Business Plan Competition on Feb. 1 with BestBook, an intra-campus book trading system.

“We connect people on campuses trying to sell books with students on campus trying to buy those same books,” explained Jester, a senior Christian studies/Biblical studies and political science double major from Benton, Ark. “Coming in first was extremely significant to us as it validated a business idea we had worked on for months."

Ouachita Baptist University hosted the 50^th anniversary of Miss Ouachita Baptist University on Saturday, Feb. 4. The pageant honored former Miss OBU title holders and crowned Tiffany Lee as the 2017 Miss Ouachita Baptist University.

“I’m really excited. I don’t feel like it’s real yet, but it will hit me eventually,” Lee said. “I think this year is going to be very busy and a very humbling experience. I am so thankful.”

Ouachita Baptist University will host the 50^th anniversary Miss Ouachita Baptist University Pageant on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Performing Arts Center. Eight contestants will compete for the 2017 Miss OBU crown. Tickets are $12 each at the door.

The pageant is sponsored by Ouachita’s Student Senate and directed by alumna Becky Hartsfield. The winner of Miss OBU will compete in the Miss Arkansas Pageant and receive a $1,000 scholarship and other prizes.

Ouachita Baptist University’s 2016 Ouachitonian yearbook earned an All-American ranking from the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) for the second consecutive year. The Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) also recognized the 2016 Ouachitonian as a Gold Medalist in its College Yearbook Critique. These are the highest awards given for yearbooks in the two organizations’ critiques.

Broadway performer Jacob Keith Watson, a 2011 Ouachita Baptist University graduate, will return to his alma mater Jan. 26-27 to perform a recital and lead a masterclass.

Watson will be accompanied by collaborative pianist Jason Weisinger, who has performed with the Boston POPS and is scheduled to perform in a workshop in conjunction with the Metropolitan Opera and Cincinnati Opera.

The Jan. 26 recital will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Ouachita’s McBeth Recital Hall in Mabee Fine Arts Center. Tickets are $10 each, and the performance is open to the public.

Ouachita's Wind Ensemble Releases "Simple Gifts" Cd, Katie Smith

Ouachita Baptist University’s Wind Ensemble recently released a CD titled “Simple Gifts.” The CDs costs $15 and features the 2012 and 2016 Wind Ensembles.

The 2016 Wind Ensemble performs the CD’s title section “Simple Gifts: Four Shaker Songs” by Frank Ticheli, including “In Yonder Valley,” “Dance,” “Here Take This Lovely Flower” and “Simple Gifts.” Other selections performed by this ensemble are the “Mayflower Overture” by Ron Nelson and “A Sacred Suite” by Brant Karrick, which includes “Spirit of the Ages Fanfare,” “Consolation” and “True Happiness/How Firm a Foundation.”

There is great diversity in the names and naming practices of Canada’s population due to the multiple languages and cultures from which names and name-givers originate. While this diversity means that everyone encounters unfamiliar names, institutional agents who work with the public are continually challenged when attempting to determine a name’s correct pronunciation, spelling, structure and gender. Drawing from over a hundred interviews in London (Ontario) and Montréal (Québec), as well as other published accounts, I outline strategies used by institutional agents to manage name diversity within the constraints of their work tasks. Using Conversation Analysis In Data-Driven Aviation Training With Large-Scale Qualitative Datasets, William A. Tuccio Ph.D., Maurice Nevile Ph.D.

This paper contributes to a growing body of work related to the Conversation Analytic Role-play Method (CARM) by studying the primary flight instruction environment to create training interventions related to radio communications and flight instruction practices. Framed in the context of conversation analysis, an approach to the detailed analysis of naturally occurring interaction, the large-scale, long-duration qualitative audio/video data collection and coding methodology is discussed, followed by trends identified in the ongoing study. The concept of CARM “trainables” are discussed with examples. The study shows that large-scale qualitative datasets may be leveraged to produce valuable data-driven training interventions.

The aim of this study is to examine collaborative relationships existing among professionals working in special education and specifically the relationships between school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and elementary school classroom teachers. A survey was administered to classroom teachers in New Hampshire. The first part of the survey asked teachers their opinions regarding the extent to which SLPs should be collaborating with teachers. The second part of the survey asked teachers to estimate how often they engaged in collaborative practices with the SLP currently working in their school. Results indicated that teachers would prefer SLPs to spend significantly more time in …

This paper examines a service standards training process established during the 2016/2017 academic year for Prairie State College (PSC), a two-year community college located in Chicago Heights Illinois. The goal of examining and revising the service training process was to enhance the quality of service after the college received poor service reviews from a recent satisfaction survey. Lasswell's Communication Model was used to create content and structure for a training manual and workshop as part of the overall service training process at PSC.
