A Critical Theory Response To Empirical Challenges In Report-Writing: Considerations For Clinical Educators And Lifelong Learners, Stella Ng Phd

Purpose

Audiologists working with/in school settings write reports, communicating assessment results and recommendations. Yet there is a gap in education and professional development regarding report-writing and the effects reports can have on children and interprofessional relationships. This article highlights the ways that the linguistic and visual construction of reports affect possibilities for children and inter-sector collaboration among clinicians, school-based professionals, and families.

Methods

Background: Simulation-based learning is a common educational tool in healthcare training and frequently employs instructional designs based on Experiential Learning Theory (ELT). However, little research explores the effectiveness and efficiency of different instructional design methodologies appropriate for simulations. This study compares two instructional design models, ELT and Guided Experiential Learning (GEL), to determine which is more effective for training the central venous catheterization (CVC) procedure. Methods: Using a quasi-experimental randomized block design, nurse anesthetists completed training under one of the two instructional design models. Objectives. To develop a formalized, comprehensive, peer-driven teaching assessment program and a valid and reliable assessment tool. Methods. A volunteer taskforce was formed and a peer-assessment program was developed using a multistep, sequential approach and the Peer Observation and Evaluation Tool (POET). A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency and practicality of the process and to establish interrater reliability of the tool. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated. Results. ICCs for 8 separate lectures evaluated by 2-3 observers ranged from 0.66 to 0.97, indicating good interrater reliability of the tool. Conclusion. Background: Standardizing the experiences of medical students in a community preceptorship where clinical sites vary by geography and discipline can be challenging. Computer-assisted learning is prevalent in medical education and can help standardize experiences, but often is not used to its fullest advantage.
