Bibliographic Instruction Lessons From A New Librarian, Carley Suther

Although I have worked in the library profession for two years, it has taken longer to understand the phenomenon of bibliographic instruction. My pre-library school background is in education, but marrying the two disciplines has not been as easy as I first assumed. I had read a lot of helpful articles about library instruction in general, but ran across very few that were geared towards best practices and advice for new librarians. In this article I will address some of the key issues that I faced when first confronted with the challenge of library instruction.

Faced with large scale instruction demands, librarians are turning to technology to maximize staff resources and extend the impact of instruction. In this presentation, participants will learn how to translate classroom instructional content into learning objects in order to make learning available to multiple users on the go. The authors will engage the audience in a series of presentations, demonstrations, interactive tasks, and discussion in order to learn how to create effective learning objects.

Like other college and university departments, academic libraries are increasingly expected to assess their services and facilities. This article describes an initial step in the development of a comprehensive assessment program for library instruction in the Brooklyn College Library. A pre- and post-quiz were developed based on the curriculum for a required library session in an introductory English composition course. The quizzes were designed to establish a baseline for student knowledge of information literacy as well as measure the effect of library instruction on student learning. The University of Richmond (UR) is an independent, privately endowed institution, with a total student body of around 5,000 students. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in the liberal arts, business, law, and leadership studies. Library instruction has been an integral part of the university libraries program since the 1970s, initiated by a five-year grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities College Library Program and the Council on Library Resources. The purpose of this project was to study problems English language learners (ELLs) face when doing research in U.S. academic libraries. A review of the literature indicates that ELLs face both linguistic and cultural barriers. Those barriers are related to learning expectations, library anxiety, and technology. Research on organizational culture and its influence on website design was consulted and used to compare the design of a library catalog’s interface with student responses to a library instruction session offered within Composition 101 for non-native speakers. Librarians and learning researchers at Central Michigan University collaboratively developed an online tool that assesses how student research attitudes and perceptions correlate to their actual research skills in order to educate them about state-of-the-art library resources and prepare them to write high-quality research papers. This article describes the reasons for developing the assessment as well as the design process and technical characteristics.

Learning Activities To Enable Students To Master Content Area Skills, Roberta Carol Batey

The need for teaching locational skills to junior high students was examined. A syllabus was developed to aid content area teachers in presenting locational skills to their students. The specific areas covered were use of the text as a tool, efficient use of common reference materials, efficient use of locational indexes, and an awareness of library arrangement and the Dewey Decimal System. The syllabus includes thirty-three teaching activities, an answer key, and notes to the teacher.

In order to alleviate some of the workload from the sole librarian of the Hartline School District in Eastern Washington, high school students were utilized as library aides. However, that created another problem which was how to efficiently train the student librarians. From this need, a curriculum was designed for teaching library aides for regular, clerical duties, to tell stories to the elementary students, and to aid in the typing and filing of catalog cards.
