Singapore Management University Report To Stakeholders 2005 - 2006, Singapore Management University
Report to Stakeholders
With the official opening of the city campus in January 2006, SMU marked a new chapter in the history of central Singapore and became an integral part of the area s continual cycle of renewal. Building on the legacy of venerable institutions in Bras Basah that formed the educational hub of yesteryear, our aim is to produce visionary leaders for tomorrow, imbued with a fine sense of ethics and social responsibility for the good of the community.
From its beginning, SMU has been a catalyst for the future development of higher education in Singapore. Two ways that we have done …

The state of the hearts of our young people, specifically whether they have the moral courage to stand up for what they believe in, is in the spotlight again with this newspaper's upcoming Youthink pages intended to showcase their views. The Youthink pages might go some way to show if the concern with our youth is well-founded. An interesting issue is raised: What exactly is critical thinking?

Using a population of graduates from a large high school with both residential and commuter students serving specifically students with Native Hawaiian ancestry, the study compares outcomes such as high school graduation, college attendance, college graduation, occupational status, and overall life happiness to determine the effects of residential status. Results indicated that the strongest variable that separated the college completers from the non-completers was receipt of college financial aid. Other important variables included Hawaiian culture, locus of control, family predominance of standard English, and beginning college at a community college
Relationships Between Non-Linguistic Variables In Second Language Acquisition And The Attained English Language Proficiency Of Taiwanese University Students, Chihming Hsieh
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Second language acquisition (SLA) research, the study of how people learn to communicate in a language other than their native language, encompasses a broad range of questions from a wide variety of perspectives. One of the most widely recognized facts about SLA was that some individuals are more successful in learning a second language than are others (Gass & Selinker, 2001). Students with the same initial linguistic abilities, who receive the same education, even in the same institution, often do not achieve the same linguistic competency levels at program completion (Dornyei, 1998). This phenomenon cannot be explained purely by linguistic …

The Making Of An Innovator, Hian Teck Hoon
Research Collection School Of Economics
Innovators experiment with things to come up with new ideas to improve the quality of existing products, develop differentiated or new products and re-organise business processes to lower costs. In a big corporation, there might be a whole R&D department where innovators are employed to design new blueprints so the company can constantly make new offerings. But innovators can also be found in small enterprises tinkering with recipes, for example, to win new customers. Innovators no doubt derive pleasure from their creative work. Yet, in modern economies, they must be employed in a firm that successfully translates their innovative activity …
The Sound Of Silence: Social Work, The Academy, And Iraq, Scott Harding
The Sound Of Silence: Social Work, The Academy, And Iraq, Scott Harding
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Despite the imposition of economic sanctions against Iraq in 1990, the social work academy has ignored the impact of this global social policy promoted by the international community. Though evidence existed for more than 10 years that sanctions contributed to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of children and other vulnerable groups in Iraq, while also crippling the nation's health care and social infrastructure, the profession has remained silent. The implications of this case study suggest a need for greater engagement by social work researchers and the profession on global issues.

Growing Up Overseas: Perceptions Of Second Language Attrition And Retrieval Amongst Expatriate Children In India, Steve Sider
Education Faculty Publications
This study involves expatriate children whose first language (L1) is English and who learned Hindi as their second language (L2) while their parents worked in India. The purpose of the study was to investigate the linguistic experiences of the children after they had left India, particularly experiences with L2 attrition. Through semi-structured interviews, subjects shared their stories of L2 acquisition and attrition. Common experiences which contributed to the attrition of the L2 included periods of non-use of the L2, social responses to the use of the L2, the lack of development of Hindi literacy and subjects’ attitude toward using the …

In this paper, we describe the development of an appropriate metadata scheme for GeogDL, a Web-based digital library application containing past-year examination resources for students taking a Singapore national examination in geography. The new metadata scheme was developed from established metadata schemes on education and e-learning. Initial evaluation showed that a role-based approach would be more viable, adapting to the different roles of teachers/educators and librarians contributing geography resources to GeogDL. The paper concludes with concrete implementation of the role-based metadata schema for GeogDL.

And this year the University celebrated one of its most significant and anticipated milestones: the graduation of our first batch of students. More than just graduates, these students – now SMU alumni – are …

Education—Soviet Style, Nurgul Kinderbaeva, Linda Serra Hagedorn

The nature of the Soviet educational system has been developing in accordance with the Soviet Union's 70-year history. During these years that the Soviet Union was controlled by the communist party, it developed an ideology centered on communist party doctrine. Also, under the leadership of different rulers the system of Soviet Education passed through many changes and reforms. Consequently, it is difficult to describe the entire history of soviet education in brief since it is such a broad topic and comprehensive from its political and ideological perspective.

From a start-up institution with great expectations just three years ago, SMU has grown leaps and bounds. This past year was no exception, as we reached new heights while reaffirming the foundational vision of what we are – and want to be. A university with a rigorous curriculum and the right kind of academic and cultural environment for research, exploration and experimentation – where calculated risks can lead to ultimate success. A university full of dynamically talented students and academically outstanding faculty – interactive players in the process of education who make up SMU’s rich intellectual and personally diverse fabric. …

Thousands of U.S. students travel to other countries each year to participate in study programs offered either by their home or the target country institutions. This study explores the effects that these study abroad experiences have on decisions that returning students make with regard to their future educational goals, career choices, and further foreign travel.
Using the alumni database of Cultural Experiences Abroad, a student travel organization, data were gathered from 185 primarily undergraduate students who spent from two weeks to one year as participants in a study abroad program. The students were from various geographic locations in the United …

If the first year of incorporation was the paving of the foundation for SMU, the second year was one of laying the first building blocks. For the university, this was a year for surging ahead – of exploration and adventure. With a sizeable student population, a faculty of international repute and two schools going on three, SMU is growing from strength to strength at an unbelievable rate. But beyond sheer numbers, I sense and see a spirit of fervour and adventure in the work of students, faculty and staff in every corner of this institution that we have founded. Our …
Service Learning In Business Schools: What The H.E.L.P. Honduras Story Teaches About Building, Sustaining, And Replicating International Initiatives In Graduate Programs, Lisa Mali Jones
Theses and Dissertations
This document outlines the foundation and first year results of the H.E.L.P. Honduras organization, which was formed as a student-based, student-governed international outreach initiative at the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University. Specifically, in its first year the organization focused on providing microcredit and service relief to victims of Hurricane Mitch in Honduras.
After studying the case of H.E.L.P. Honduras, readers should conclude that educators interested in sponsoring sustainable student-run service learning organizations at private universities must address three primary issues: the problem of student selection and turnover, the need for administrative and faculty endorsement, and the need …

Singapore Management University Report To Stakeholders 2000 - 2001, Singapore Management University
Report to Stakeholders
It has been an extremely gratifying first year for SMU. From scratch, we saw a curriculum developed, a more than credible faculty assembled, a campus bloom from the ground in record time, and a small group of bright and very promising young individuals set the standard as the historic pioneer intake of students. How did we even begin to persuade sponsors or students to come on board with us? We had no track record, no alumni, not even an existing undergraduate population. Yet, industry support was unabashedly warm from the time Singapore’s third university was announced. First year application for …
