Mankato State University: The Second Century: The First Twenty-Five Years, 1968-1992: An Interpretative Essay, Claire E. Faust

MSU Authors Collection

Donald Youel, in Mankato State College - An Interpretative Essay, commented on the development of this institution for its first one hundred years. He did not chronicle each event, but rather provided the reader with an understanding of what happened and what it meant for the College and for society. He organized this essay from different perspectives: "the developing program, the enrollment, students, the state governing board, administration and faculty." He made the point well that "Mankato's story is a representative instance of America's dream that opportunity means, fundamentally, educational opportunity."

Educational Aspirations And Perceptions Of Health Occupation Graduates From Community Colleges, Lawrence A. Dahl Jan 1993

Educational Aspirations And Perceptions Of Health Occupation Graduates From Community Colleges, Lawrence A. Dahl

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The major purpose of this study was to investigate whether associate degree health occupation graduates perceived that the factors proposed in Dougherty's (1987) model on the continuance of education were valid. A second purpose was to profile selected characteristics of this population.

The sample consisted of licensed health care practitioners for whom an associate degree might be an entry level of preparation. The data were collected through the use of a questionnaire constructed to determine educational aspirations degree and to assess perceptions of the factors identified by Dougherty (1987). The data were analyzed using t tests and the chi-square test …

A Meeting Of Cultures: Faculty And Part-Time Doctoral Students In An Edd Program, Paul R. Smith

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine the cultural perspectives of the part-time doctoral students in educational administration and of selected faculty in the college of education at a medium sized middle western university. More specifically, the intent was to determine what types of cultures existed within these groups, the factors contributing to the development of these cultures, and what affect these factors had on the Ed.D. degree itself. A qualitative research approach was taken and included individual interviews, classroom observations, and university documents. Non-participant observations included five doctoral classes and related formal and informal conversations. The data gathering …

The Effect Of Noncognitive Variables On The Prediction Of Academic Difficulty And Attrition Of Freshman Student-Athletes, Bruce W. Cunningham Jan 1993

The Effect Of Noncognitive Variables On The Prediction Of Academic Difficulty And Attrition Of Freshman Student-Athletes, Bruce W. Cunningham

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education

This study identified a set of noncognitive variables, indicators of attitudes, habits, and beliefs as they relate to an individual's educational pursuits, in the form of Probation and Attrition Scores, to be used as alternatives to the exclusive use of cognitive variables to identify freshman student-athletes who are at risk of academic difficulty or attrition. Data were collected at an urban, public university of approximately 17,000 students using the University's Freshman Survey, an instrument that combines a number of scales designed to measure specific sets of noncognitive indicators.

Noncognitive survey data, as well as demographic information and cognitive admissions data, …

Implications For Higher Education Of A Competency-Based Approach To Education And Training, John Bowden, Geoff Masters Dec 1992

Implications For Higher Education Of A Competency-Based Approach To Education And Training, John Bowden, Geoff Masters

Prof Geoff Masters AO

This report presents a summary of the data collected by the project, and an analysis, using a view of competence through a relational model, of some of the issues that emerged. The authors suggest that universities, the professions, employers and the community have much to gain from the activities of the past few years concerned with the development of competency-based standards by the professions, although they do not believe that a full-blown competency-based approach to education will become dominant in university courses.

Combining Feedback And Assessment Via Web‐Based Homework [Invited], Randall W. Hall, Leslie G. Butler, Neil R. Kestner, Patrick A. Limbach

Randall W. Hall

Multiple choice homework, including feedback on each incorrect answer, is administered over the Web using an in‐house program. The large enrollments in lower division courses hinder the use of homework without the aid of a computer for grading, recording, and reporting. The current system permits faculty to create assignments using only a word processor, which allows the facile inclusion of symbols, pictures, and other non‐textual information. This is particularly important in science classes, where such material is a major part of any assignment. The system includes security measures, and reports scores back to instructors in a form which can be …

Female Doctoral Students: How Age Differentiates Institutional Choice, Retention Enhancement, And Scholarly Accomplishments, Linda Serra Hagedorn, Susan K. Doyle

Linda Serra Hagedorn

This study, conducted at an urban research university, attempted to identify those conditions valuable in recruiting and subsequently retaining older (over 35 years of age) female doctoral students. The study used data from a Spring 1991 survey of all graduate students which solicited information about experiences, accomplishments, and growth attributable to the graduate experience. Seventy-nine percent of female doctoral students participated in the survey. Sample size for statistical tests varied from 257 to 309. The analysis compared the responses of women under 35 to those of women 35 and over in institutional choice, retention enhancement, and professional accomplishments. Findings indicated …

Connecting Education, Work, And Citizenship: How Assessment Can Help, Marcia Mentkowski, Glen Rogers Dec 1992

Connecting Education, Work, And Citizenship: How Assessment Can Help, Marcia Mentkowski, Glen Rogers

Glen Rogers

Complex, multidimensional abilities-such as problem solving and perspective taking-can make the connection between education, work, and citizenship, which, in turn, can rekindle public trust in higher education and stimulate college/ work/community collaboration. How abilities are defined and assesseddeterniines how useful they are to educators, employers, and the public. The authors demonstrate an assessment strategy that infers abilities from perf orniance and compares alumni abilities with professional, national, and f acuity expectations. The strategy helps educators to become more explicit about how learning transfers, and helps students to better meet immediate expectations for perf orniance, envision future roles, and continue to …
