The Commuters' Alma Mater: Profiles Of College Student Experiences At A Commuter Institution, Tisa Ann Mason Jan 1993

The Commuters' Alma Mater: Profiles Of College Student Experiences At A Commuter Institution, Tisa Ann Mason

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

Writers have criticized the literature on college student involvement as being biased, starting from the premise that the residential experience is the normative one, and have called for a reexamination of the concept of student involvement. Thus in response to that need, this study explored the concept of student involvement from commuter college students' perspectives.;Focused on both Astin's theory of student involvement and Pace's work on quality of effort, it was hypothesized that there were differences between highly involved commuter college students and commuter college students who were minimally involved in the college experience. Since student involvement has both quantitative …

Educational Aspirations And Perceptions Of Health Occupation Graduates From Community Colleges, Lawrence A. Dahl

The major purpose of this study was to investigate whether associate degree health occupation graduates perceived that the factors proposed in Dougherty's (1987) model on the continuance of education were valid. A second purpose was to profile selected characteristics of this population.

The sample consisted of licensed health care practitioners for whom an associate degree might be an entry level of preparation. The data were collected through the use of a questionnaire constructed to determine educational aspirations degree and to assess perceptions of the factors identified by Dougherty (1987). The Impact Of Perceived Research And Teaching Competence On The Credibility Of A Basic Course Director: A Case Study, Pamela L. Gray, Martin G. Murray, Nancy L. Buerkel-Rothfuss

Basic Communication Course Annual

1992 Award Winning Paper in Basic Course Research

This case study provides an initial inquiry into graduate teaching assistants' (GTA) perceived credibility of a basic course director (BCD), specifically isolating their perception of the teaching and research competence of the BCD. The results indicate that the perceived credibility may be tied to both teaching and research competence, appears to be extremely important to the GTAs, and implies that low credibility would have many unpleasant effects on the staff, their teaching and the graduate program as a whole. This case study points to the need for more research to identify variables …

Teaching Ethics In Introductory Public Speaking: Review And Proposal, Jon A. Hess Jan 1993

Teaching Ethics In Introductory Public Speaking: Review And Proposal, Jon A. Hess

Basic Communication Course Annual

Ethics are not heavily emphasized in either public speaking textbooks or classroom lectures. This de-emphasis of public speaking ethics is unfortunate. Educators should take responsibility for making sure that students are familiar with ethical issues and that they know that unethical public communication is not acceptable. Since public speaking textbooks do not provide much explicit guidance for ethical decision making, supplementary material is provided in this article. Four ethical principles are provided to help students understand the nature of communication ethics, a sample class lecture is outlined, and teaching ideas are included.

Campus And Consortium In An Era Of Large-Scale Research: An Historical Study Of The Virginia Associated Research Center, 1962-1967, Elizabeth Buchanan Ward

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A large agency of the Federal Government, three public institutions of higher learning, and two agents of State Government in the Commonwealth of Virginia launched a federally funded research and education consortium in 1962. The Virginia Associated Research Center (VARC) promised great success. The University of Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and The College of William and Mary joined forces to provide the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Langley Research Center with a scientific research base and a graduate education program. The Commonwealth initially provided enthusiastic support from the Governor's office and from the State Council for Higher Education.;The three colleges …

Mankato State University: The Second Century: The First Twenty-Five Years, 1968-1992: An Interpretative Essay, Claire E. Faust

MSU Authors Collection

Donald Youel, in Mankato State College - An Interpretative Essay, commented on the development of this institution for its first one hundred years. He did not chronicle each event, but rather provided the reader with an understanding of what happened and what it meant for the College and for society. He organized this essay from different perspectives: "the developing program, the enrollment, students, the state governing board, administration and faculty." He made the point well that "Mankato's story is a representative instance of America's dream that opportunity means, fundamentally, educational opportunity."

Academic Leadership In Advancement Activities: A Dimension Of The Dean's Role In American Higher Education, Frank Cortez Flores Jr.

CGU Theses & Dissertations

In an atmosphere of declining support, rising costs, and an increasing emphasis on quality education, the need for effective fund-raising is important to American higher education. During the past decade, institutions of higher education, both public and private, faced difficult financial problems with no apparent end in sight. A growing number of colleges and universities have been threatened by the unstable economy and shrinking applicant pools and are faltering under this threat. Private higher education seems to be especially vulnerable to financial difficulty and has been historically dependent upon philanthropic support to complement traditional revenues in an effort to remain …
