This contribution falls within the domain of children’s and young adults’ digital literature and, in particular, in that segment of the field aimed at exploring both the potential and the limits of reading digital literary works at school. In order to describe the actual reception process (and eventually to accompany the formal introduction of e-lit creations in the French literature school programs), a selection of literary apps was presented to eight groups of young readers, across different school levels: two adaptations of contemporary picturebooks were read in four primary school classes (I can’t wait [France Télévision, 2013] and With …

Alternative Delivery Methods: A Reflection On The Semester That Almost Wasn't, Joshua J. Anderson Jul 2020

Alternative Delivery Methods: A Reflection On The Semester That Almost Wasn't, Joshua J. Anderson

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

As educators we are by our very nature self-reflective practitioners. The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 forced many of us to reconsider our approaches to remote learning, and this narrative describes my experiences with alternative delivery methods of instruction during the past two months. It is my hope that others can learn from both my successes and my failures. I encourage all educators to thoughtfully examine what they have experienced during this unprecedented time and consider how the lessons learned can positively influence their instructional approaches and readiness moving forward. The narrative begins by contextualizing my background, programs, classes, and institution. …

Rethinking The Teaching Of Writing In An Era Of Remote Learning: Lessons Learned From A Local Site Of The National Writing Project, Troy Hicks

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

As the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to close in the spring of 2020, teacher consultants from a local writing project site were compelled to make their practice public, sharing conversations about what remote learning and the teaching of writing could look like through a series of eight webinars and, subsequently, an open institute in the summer of 2020. Built on principles of the National Writing Project including openness, flexibility, and an inquiry-driven stance toward professional learning, the work of this site’s director and teacher leaders is described as they worked together to think about issues of equity and access, socio-emotional …

One District’S Stakeholders’ Descriptions Of The Supports And Barriers Impacting The Use Of A Digital Mathematics Curriculum, Andrew R. Mills Jul 2020

One District’S Stakeholders’ Descriptions Of The Supports And Barriers Impacting The Use Of A Digital Mathematics Curriculum, Andrew R. Mills

All NMU Master's Theses

Digital Curriculum Resources are a new, fast-growing educational technology for learning mathematics that can allow today’s classroom to be transformed instantaneously. More efficient technology, however, does not necessarily equate to increased student achievement. To ensure that these technologies benefit their learners, it will become critical for schools to identify potential barriers and develop plans for addressing these barriers during implementation. This qualitative case study sought to better understand the experiences of various stakeholder groups at a suburban middle school that has used a digital mathematics curriculum for the last two school years. Using an interview protocol, two administrators, five teachers, …

Knowledge And Access: An Investigation Into Course Material Models At The Collegiate Level, Jonathan David Sadhoo Jul 2020

Knowledge And Access: An Investigation Into Course Material Models At The Collegiate Level, Jonathan David Sadhoo

All Theses And Dissertations

For over 1,000 years, physical textbooks have been the primary course material tool utilized to facilitate knowledge transfer from the instructor to the student population. In current times, multiple barriers to success have emerged for the modern student of higher education, including affordability, accessibility, and quality. In addition, student engagement with the course material can be a critical factor for student achievement. Taylor & Parsons (2011) indicated that student engagement levels in the classroom are linked with overall success in the course. Within higher education, faculty and academic administrators are at the front lines, attempting to reduce and eliminate these …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Educational Technology, Matthew Joseph Fugere Jul 2020

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Educational Technology, Matthew Joseph Fugere

OTS Master's Level Projects & Papers

Technology integration in modern classrooms continues to be an important aspect of teaching. However, even if long standing barriers to technology like access and funding are lifted, teachers do not always integrate technology in their classrooms. This action research study collected interview data from a single high school English Language Arts (ELA) department. Teachers were interviewed over Zoom using an interview protocol that contained 14 semi-structured questions. The interview questions asked teachers questions about how they perceive the technology they use in their day-to-day work and if that technology provides their students with meaningful learning experiences. The results of the …

Towards A Flexible Learning Ecosystem In Philippine Tertiary Education, Robert C. Roleda, Ador R. Torneo, Raymond R. Tan Jul 2020

Towards A Flexible Learning Ecosystem In Philippine Tertiary Education, Robert C. Roleda, Ador R. Torneo, Raymond R. Tan

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

The Philippines has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by implementing a lockdown in an effort to suppress the spread of the disease. This measure has led to unprecedented disruption in many sectors of the economy. Educational institutions have similarly been affected. As schools are the ideal breeding ground for “super spreader” events, the suspension of face-to-face instruction is an important control measure from a public health perspective. Physical closures may need to be maintained even after the lockdown is eased. This situation poses a challenge on how to maintain the continuity of the Philippines’ human capital development during the pandemic.

Malaware Defensive: A Game To Train Users To Combat Malware, Tyler Moon, Tamirat Abegaz, Bryson Payne, Abi Salimi

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Several research findings indicate that basic cyber hygiene can potentially deter the majority of cyber threats. One of the ways cybersecurity professionals can prepare users to ensure proper hygiene is to help them develop their ability to spot the difference between normal and abnormal behavior in a computer system. Malware disrupts the normal behavior of a computer system. The lack of appropriate user training has been one of the main reasons behind the exposure of computer systems to threats, from social engineering to viruses, trojans, and ransomware. Basic knowledge about common behavioral characteristics of malware could help users identify potentially …

Changing Social Learning Theory Through Reliance On The Internet Of Things And Artificial Intelligence, Adam I. Attwood

Journal of Sustainable Social Change

Implications for social learning theory are examined based on the concept of “cyborg” education through a variety of scholarly and popular media sources with implications for schools and teacher educators. Recommendations for teacher education are posited as the topic of technological mediation between people continues to change in relation to how education will likely need to adapt to provide a prosocial environment through technological mediation, though the social learning itself operates in different ways.
