An Experimental Study On The Effect Of Highly-Directed Versus Non-Directed Homework Assignments On Student Achievement, John Robert Micklich
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Description
The study was conducted at Northern Arizona University during the fall semester of 1968. It involved a total of six instructors, all full time members of the mathematics faculty, and 304 students; 203 in 6 classes of general mathematics and 101 in 61 classes of college algebra.
The directed homework classes received assignments that were taken up at the next class meeting, graded, scored, recorded, and returned. The non-directed classes received the same assignments, but the homework was not taken up. There were lectures and discussion in both groups prior to assigning homework and after it was turned in. …
A Comparative Study Of The Graded And Ungraded Elementary Schools., Sondra L. Cohn
A Comparative Study Of The Graded And Ungraded Elementary Schools., Sondra L. Cohn
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The purpose of this study was to determine if there were significant differences in the scholastic achievements of children trained in an ungraded elementary school and those trained in a graded elementary school.
Children attending the only ungraded school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1966 were tested after attending that school for three consecutive years, and again after five years. A neighboring graded elementary school was used for comparison in the experimental grouping. Another pair of neighboring graded schools was utilized as a control group. The total sample tested was 140 students.
The hypotheses of the study were that significant …
An Experimental Study Of The Impact Of Typewriting On Language Arts Skills Among Students In Elementary School, Jeanne Popejoy Smith
An Experimental Study Of The Impact Of Typewriting On Language Arts Skills Among Students In Elementary School, Jeanne Popejoy Smith
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
It was the purpose of the study to compare test data collected from students before and after touch typewriting was taught to a group of 36 first grade students and 50 third grade students, and to determine whether the test data contained statistically pertinent evidence which would indicate that for elementary school students, learning to touch typewrite could effect their learning in the language arts skills. Four groups, one experimental and one control group from each grade, were given an intelligence test at the beginning of the study, and a reading test and a specially constructed test on spelling, punctuation, …
The Effect Of Studying The Structure Of Concepts And Cognitive-Emphasis Social Studies Units On Selected Cognitive Processes Of Fifth-Grade Children, Margaret Smith Greer
The Effect Of Studying The Structure Of Concepts And Cognitive-Emphasis Social Studies Units On Selected Cognitive Processes Of Fifth-Grade Children, Margaret Smith Greer
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of two types of treatments which were designed to increase the efficiency of the cognitive functions, Discrimination, Inference, and Generalization and to decrease the tendency to be Overcautious or to Overgeneralize in processing given data. The Concept Structure Study Program was planned to provide an understanding of the meaning elements and the arrangement of elements which together comprise the structure of concepts at varying levels of complexity. The Cognitive-Emphasis Social Studies Units were designed to facilitate the formation of simple-to-complex concepts by differentiation of relevant from irrelevant data, grouping of …

A Procedure To Discriminate Between Successful And Unsuccessful Pressure Groups Which Have An Interest In Education, Thomas John Gustafson
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
A pilot study was designed to determine whether a procedure could be developed to predict if a pressure group will be effective in its attempt to influence educational policy. The eight variables tested were: 1) the critical situation, 2) the leadership of the group, 3) the prestige of the group in the community, 4) the control of the group over economic goods, 5) the channels of communication with local, state, and/or national officials, 6) shared attitudes of the group with the community, 7) the solidarity of the group, and 8) the strategy of the group to implement the change. A …

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Hearing Deficiencies On Reading Ability, Wayne Robert Weimer
An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Hearing Deficiencies On Reading Ability, Wayne Robert Weimer
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Purpose of the study: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of hearing deficiencies on reading achievement. The study also investigated and analyzed the significance of giving special consideration to the teaching methods when teaching those children who have hearing impairments. A further consideration of the study was to investigate teacher perception of children with hearing defects through a comparison of teacher listings of suspected cases and audiometer sweep test identification.
Procedure: In September, 1968, teachers were asked to list children suspected as being hard-of-hearing. Fifty-seven hard-of-hearing children and 372 normal hearing children from a total of …
Sex-Role Identification And Achievement, Ronald Edwin Hull
Sex-Role Identification And Achievement, Ronald Edwin Hull
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
The purpose of the research was to test empirically the assertion that children at the preadolescent stage of development would evidence greater social-psychological reward and a higher level of achievement in school under the direction of male teachers than female teachers. An additional concern was to determine with whom boys and girls identify. More specifically, the study was designed to focus on three areas of human interaction: (1) Students' identification with their teachers, (2) Students' identification with others in primary relationships and with other role models, and (3) Students' self-concept in terms of masculinityfemininity traits. Forty-seven male and forty-eight female …
