Our Grades Were Broken: Overcoming Barriers And Challenges To Implementing Standards-Based Grading, Randal Peters, Tom Buckmiller
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
The purpose of this study was to describe the barriers and challenges school leaders face as they implement a standards-based grading (SBG) system. The researchers used a multiple case study methodology to investigate how key school leaders described their implementation journey at three schools that differed in size, demographics, and location. Purposeful sampling was used to identify key administrators at three different schools who were in the process of implementing a SBG system. Data were collected primarily via semi-structured interviews. In the analysis, researchers used three phases: horizontalization, thematizing, and textural-structural synthesis. Each of the three schools had very different …

Forgiveness Education And Bullying Prevention And Intervention: Benefits For Bullies, Victims And Schools, Amy Carlon, Suzanne Freedman, Nicole Skaar
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
Over the past 50 years, attitudes toward incidences of bullying in the schools have shifted significantly. Previously, bullying was seen as an expected and normal part of a child's development and school experience. Some even believed bullying wasn't harmful, that it assisted in character-building, and was simply "part of growing up" (Smith & Brain, 2000, p. 3). In recent decades, however, the negative effects of bullying have been more widely recognized, and there is growing acceptance that experiences of bullying often lead to negative outcomes, such as poor physical and psychological health, for those who are victimized (Due et al., …

Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
With the dire financial crisis facing our national and state economy, schools are forced to reduce budgets while simultaneously improve program delivery. Professional development is the mechanism that is generally used to facilitate improving educational delivery and subsequently student achievement results. This investigation examines the influence of professional development on student achievement since No Child Left Behind. Results indicate that professional development can have a moderate impact on student achievement. A number of moderators were found to have a positive significant impact on this effect including the level of students, the duration of the professional development, the discipline area focus …
Providing The Fuel (And Passing The Flame), Todd Pagano
Providing The Fuel (And Passing The Flame), Todd Pagano
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
At the risk of opening with a cliché statement- at the heart of the most effective mentor is a burning passion. The fuel for this passion is a desire to convince, not just try to, but actually convince your mentee that you care about their success (be it in the classroom, career, or personal life). I am guilty of believing in, and living by, this cliché. However, despite passion being my primary motivator, I am not unwilling to admit that rationale for mentoring can sometimes transcend this ethically normative line of thinking. I believe that there are also sometimes quantitative, …
Examining The Relationship Between Math Scores And English Language Proficiency, Denfield L. Henry, Beate Baltes, Nicolae Nistor
Examining The Relationship Between Math Scores And English Language Proficiency, Denfield L. Henry, Beate Baltes, Nicolae Nistor
Journal of Educational Research and Practice
Multiple studies propose that English proficiency dictates English language learners’ (ELLs) performances on mathematics assessments. The current study investigates the predictive power of English proficiency on mathematics scores, while controlling for gender, socioeconomic status (SES), and grade level among ELLs at a south Florida elementary school. Krashen’s theory of comprehensible input as a precursor to second language acquisition provides the framework for this quantitative, correlation study. Mathematics scores from the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test for Grade 3–5 ELLs (N = 177) were analyzed using multiple linear regression. Analysis reveals English proficiency as a statistically significant predictor of mathematics scores. …
A History Of Financial Aid To Students, Matthew B. Fuller
A History Of Financial Aid To Students, Matthew B. Fuller
Journal of Student Financial Aid
The history of financial aid in higher education covers a board range of philanthropic-, scholarship-, and loan-based approaches. This article comprehensively covers the history of American financial aid to students from influences of European medieval institutions to contemporary aid systems. A broad history of financial aid is covered, revealing an evolution from a system primarily based upon local philanthropic efforts, to a more formal system of scholarships and grants, to, finally, a complex federal system of loans. As the history of financial aid is chronologically covered, attention is paid to describing how financial aid policies and practices were a response …
The “Gainful Employment Rule” And Student Loan Defaults: How The Policy Frame Overlooks Important Normative Implications, Gabriel Serna
The “Gainful Employment Rule” And Student Loan Defaults: How The Policy Frame Overlooks Important Normative Implications, Gabriel Serna
Journal of Student Financial Aid
In this essay I examine the empirical considerations and normative aspects that such a proposal engenders and how the policy frame, while useful, misses important normative implications for aid policy. Specifically, I will analyze the policy’s proposed goals, and the normative implications that adoption of such measures entails; which have been omitted from the policy debate. I will also consider how empirical or economic implications have taken center stage in the process of defining the policy’s image and the potential negative consequnces this creates.

An Education Ceo: Robert Furek '64 Brings Accountability To Hartford Public Schools, Rick Green
An Education Ceo: Robert Furek '64 Brings Accountability To Hartford Public Schools, Rick Green
Colby Magazine
Armed state troopers standing by his side, an ashen-faced Robert Furek '64 waded carefully through the jeering crowd lining the hallway of the ornate Hartford city hall.
"Racists and fascists!" some yelled. Furek, chairman of the board of trustees running the Hartford, Conn., public schools, quickly left the building, the taunts and finger-pointing. Furek and his colleagues had just voted to remove the district's superintendent of schools, an African-American woman some in this downtrodden community saw as a source of hope and inspiration.

After 1998 financial crisis, the growth of Indonesian manufactures sector had been dominated by the technology intensive- tools and machinery sub sector. The development of tools and machinery sub-sector should have increased the demand for skilled and specific labors namely vocational high school (VHS) graduates. Nevertheless, the VHS graduates’ roles had relatively been reduced. Despite they have better opportunities to develop their career in the long term, they are less likely to achieve supervisory or higher career level because the diploma or undergraduates workers most likely occupy the level. One of the main factors behind their lower career level prospects …

South African Principalship, Agency & Intersectionality Theory, Michèle Schmidt, Raj Mestry
Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale
Gender bias towards South African female principals remains a problem and compelling issue for research. The Constitution policy addresses gender equality, yet women still do not experience equal rights in practice. This study uses a theory of intersectionality to examine two Black South African women’s leadership experiences in their roles as principals in two South African schools. The goal of the paper is to examine how these women negotiate obstacles in their work that may constrain their agency as leaders in South African schools. The project involves semi-structured interviews and the results provide a significant contribution to the small body …

Educational Leadership In A Fragile State: Comparative Insights From Haiti, Gaetane Jean-Marie, Steve Sider
Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale
Although there has been extensive examination of educational leadership in the developed world (e.g. Fullan, 2001; Leithwood & Sun, 2012), there has been much less research on school leadership in fragile states such as Haiti. This paper responds to Dimmock and Walker’s (2000) call for greater attention to comparative and international research on educational leadership specifically by examining school leadership in the Haitian context. The study on which this paper is based examines the experiences of eight school leaders in Haiti in response to the question: What types of leadership practices do school leaders in Haiti exhibit? Three themes are …
