Creating time for research is important, yet difficult. Creating large blocks of dedicated research time is nearly impossible. It is critical, therefore, that the institution encourages all levels to work in a coordinated effort to assist faculty in accessing those precious minutes and smaller blocks of time. At the departmental level the Management and Marketing Division conducts a Research and Teaching (R&T) Forum six to eight times per academic year. The forum allows the division’s 28 faculty members to brainstorm, find areas of similar interests, combine research efforts, and present a “test run” before submission to a journal or conference. …

Searching For A Needle In A Haystack: Indications Of Social Justice Among Aspiring Leaders, Vonzell Agosto, Zorka Karanxha

We conducted a content analysis of 34 statements of interest submitted by applicants applying to an education leadership preparation program. The purpose of the analysis was to understand the applicants’ orientations toward social justice. Using Kumashiro’s (2000) and Apple’s discussions of anti-oppressive education, we identified three practices in the candidates’ treatment of the writing prompt concerning leadership related to Othering: ignoring, marginalizing, and mentioning. The fourth practice, embodying (evidencing through practice) a social justice orientation, was a practice we identified in statements submitted by a few applicants (n=7). [Excerpt] This chapter presents analyses of the compensation and mobility of school superintendents in New York State during the 1978-79 to 1982-83 period. The focus is on school superintendents because they are the chief operating officers of school districts, their salaries are determined through individual "negotiations" with school boards, and their salary data were made available to us. In contrast, school principals' salary data were not available to us. Especially in large districts, principals tend to be members of a union and their salary increases negotiated collectively, which limits the likelihood of observing individual principals' salaries being related to measures …

A questionnaire on academic dishonesty was completed by a sample of 62 MBAs enrolled at an institute of management in India. About 20 percent of the respondents reported that they had participated in 12 of the 16 academically dishonest practices listed on the survey instrument. Approximately 95 percent of the respondents reported having participated in at least one of the sixteen practices. The study also looked at the differences related to gender, age, and grade point average (GPA), and how the findings compared to the results that have been reported in the literature. Future direction research are suggested.

The purpose of this study is to identify organizational culture types and leadership roles among research and non-research libraries in higher education institutions in the United States and to reveal trends that can assist in enacting needed organizational change. Organizational culture and leadership are two intertwined concepts that are strongly aligned with the human element of any supervisory experience. According to Crosby, they help “nurture effective and humane organizations” (Crosby, 2004). Analyzing 197-83 panel data from more than 700 New York State school districts, the authors find evidence that school superintendents were rewarded, both by higher salary increases and by enhanced opportunities to move to belter-paying jobs, for having low school tax rates and high educational achievement within their districts, relative to the values of those variables in comparable school districts in the state. The rewards were, however, quite small. The analysis also suggests that the superintendents themselves did not significantly influence either school tax rates or educational test scores in their districts.

Women are now the majority of students in institutions of higher education in the United States, and in many ways women as students and faculty have seen significant progress. But numbers do not tell the whole story. Subtle forms of discrimination continue to exist, and the higher up the pyramid you go, the fewer women are to be found, whether among tenured faculty, as presidents and provosts or as board members and board chairs. Many steps can be taken to improve the situation. Some institutions are recognizing that. We note some positive changes and discuss areas where improvement is needed. …

One of the key factors determining the economic status and success of women is their level of education. The First Year Experience Program at Western Oregon University partnered with Hamersly Library to digitally capture capstone projects featured at the first annual FYE Symposium. This pilot project published scholarship online that has multiple uses, including promoting student work, publicizing the FYE program, and assisting with student retention. This poster will explore the lessons learned from this partnership and how collaboration with other departments on campus, such as the Library, adds value to the First Year Experience.

It is not unusual to hear study in the vocational education sector referred to as a ‘stepping stone’ into further studies in the higher education environment. What this pathway entails for those who choose it is not immediately clear however. This article reports on research conducted with a small cohort of students who arrived at an Australian university with advanced standing or credit transfer based on their studies in the vocational sector. A narrative inquiry approach highlights the voices of these participants drawn through stories of their individual experiences of the transition to higher education. Leadership preparation studies in general have been limited relative to specific program practices and outcomes (Murphy & Vriesenga, 2006; Perez, Uline, Johnson, James-Ward, & Basom, 2011). Apartir de los años ochenta, los académicos comienzan a ser identificados como objeto de estudio en la investigación educativa en México. Entre 1992 y 2007 se realizaron cuatro estudios nacionales de carácter cuantitativo sobre la planta académica. En este artículo se realiza una comparación metodológica entre dichos trabajos, a lo largo de seis dimensiones: 1) universo, 2) muestra, 3) diseño de muestreo, 4) instrumento, 5) aplicación del instrumento y tasa de respuesta, y 6) captura de la información y base de datos generada. The authors provide an overview of a culture-equity audit conducted in a rural Appalachian school. The purpose was to collect information that would assist the school to optimize student academic performance. School culture is critical to establishing successful school learning environments. It provides one of the most significant foundations for successful student achievement (Cleveland, Powell, Saddler, &Tyler, 2008).
