Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
The Summer of 2008 ended with a decision to more actively participate in the classroom. Some of our objectives were more interaction, relationship building, additional opportunities to expose students to our resources, and strengthen student information literacy. We wanted to do it in such a way as to make it meaningful for the students, helpful for the professors, and useful to us. More interaction was an obvious initial objective to begin with. Library instruction limited to an hour in the Fall and an hour in the Spring is very constraining. It is simply not possible to adequately expose students to …

The Digital Literacy Contest: Evaluating Higher Level Information Literacy Skills, Helga B. Visscher, Karen S. Croneis
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
In April 2009 the University of Alabama (UA) Libraries in conjunction with Global Networked-Intelligence Contests (GNIC) sponsored the Digital Literacy Contest (DLC) http://DigitalLiteracyContest.org. DLC is a web-based game in which students compete to find and document answers to questions using only information they find online. Participants have called this competition “awesome” and “lots of fun” while agreeing that “it was fun and frustrating which means I KNOW I learned something.” Join us as we talk about the Digital Literacy Contest, discuss the role of GNIC, report contest results and participant feedback, explain data analysis conclusions, and share recommendations and next …

The proliferation of digital media has created a need for college instructors to cultivate in students the skills required to navigate and participate effectively within an information- and communication-rich environment. In addition, digital technologies open up new opportunities for integrating research-intensive instruction specifically designed to incorporate information literacy into the core curriculum. This panel will discuss a pedagogical experiment in which we created an “eXtensible” classroom that integrated a number of institutional resources. Our team worked with the instructor of record for an upper-division course to develop a support model that encouraged students to engage in “active scholarship.” Beginning with …

Throw Away The Map: Blazing New Trails Between Information Literacy And The Disciplines, Carrie Donovan, Brian Winterman
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
There have been many approaches to information literacy education at academic institutions, and many positive outcomes from these efforts. Still, there is need for more research, exploration, and professional communication among librarians to identify information literacy teaching methods that have a consistent and long-lasting impact. Librarians at Indiana University-Bloomington embraced the announcement for information literacy in the General Education requirements as an opportunity to evolve the instruction program from an ad-hoc, decentralized program into one that is based on measurable and achievable learning outcomes for every discipline. When we began asking ourselves what it would take to achieve this on …

This panel, consisting of instructors of the Introduction to Women’s Studies course, is concerned with including information literacy and skills training concepts into curriculum in a way that supplements our subject matter. In an introductory level course there is usually a broad range of experience in information literacy. As may be expected, upper class students have a better understanding of the research process than first year students and general education students have less interest in subject-specific research than majors or minors. Both of these predispose students to resistance to new techniques. Despite these differences, we found that most students stated …

Blogging Your Research: Teaching Students To Critically Assess And Participate In The Culture Of Electronic Research And Writing, Amy Ratto Parks
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Whether we like it or not, most student writing these days happens through facebook, myspace, twitter, and texting. Though we assume that academic reading and writing ought to be distinct from social writing, it often isn’t. Students will go to Google for celebrity gossip or information on the Civil War and accept the information about both on equal terms. The seemingly simple nature of online access to information requires that we give students concrete tools to critically assess the information they find there. The fact that many students consider Wikipedia as a credible resource is evidence of this. It looks …

Assessing The Evaluation Of Library Instruction Using A Business Model, Barbara Petersohn
Assessing The Evaluation Of Library Instruction Using A Business Model, Barbara Petersohn
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
The business sector has traditionally evaluated their training and instruction programs on a model that considers 4 levels of success (Kirkpatrick). These levels can be described as success based on 1) appeal, 2) learning outcomes 3) integration of learning into daily work routines, or 4) overall impact on / improvement of the organization. This paper describes how this rubric can be generally, and ideally, translated and applied to instruction programs in libraries to determine what levels of evaluation are attempted by libraries. And, based on a review and analysis of case studies of the literature of library instruction, considers questions …
Communication Renaissance: Environmental Scanning And Futuring In The Composition Classroom, David Bailey
Communication Renaissance: Environmental Scanning And Futuring In The Composition Classroom, David Bailey
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
The world of research will soon experience a cataclysmic shift. As newspapers and more traditional venues of scholarly communication fold from pressure created by online news sources, Really Simple Syndication feeds, and news aggregates, the Composition classroom must aim ahead of the curve and teach students the essential skill of Environmental Scanning and Futuring. Environmental Scanning and Futuring are cooperative disciplines that seek to highlight trends and patterns within specific fields and disciplines using the plethora of data available on the World Wide Web. What makes these methods so useful in the face of the Communication Renaissance is their focus …

Learning Style And The Information Search Process, Mary Jane Rootes
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Dr. Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process theory (ISP) asserts that there are six stages within the quest for information: initiation, selection, exploration, formulation and collection. A successful search for information will entail each of these stages. In each of these stages, a person experiences thoughts, feelings and actions unique to the stage. Kolb’s Learning Style Inventory asserts that those with different predominant learning styles will experience thoughts, feelings and perceptions differently. If this is correct, it would follow that students with different predominant learning styles will experience the thoughts, feelings and actions within each of these stages differently. It is the …

Interface Literacy: Screencasts, Guis, And Computer-Mediated Authorship, Michael J. Cripps
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
Our lives are increasingly mediated by computers and graphical user interfaces or GUIs. In education, computer-mediated learning often involves the integration of new technologies into the classroom context. In an educational environment in which courses have specific content, and in which students (and faculty) must learn the interfaces that enable them to access and engage the content, how might one move from more work for teachers and learners to a different kind of teaching and learning? Are there particular ways to weave technology and content together to move from an additive model to an integrated one that helps learners become …

The Use Of A Computer Graphic Organizer For Persuasive Composition Writing By Hispanic Students With Specific Learning Disabilities, Caridad H. Unzueta
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students with specific learning disabilities (SLD) struggle with the writing process. Particularly, they have difficulties developing and expanding ideas, organizing and elaborating sentences, and revising and editing their compositions (Graham, Harris, & Larsen, 2001; Myles, 2002). Computer graphic organizers offer a possible solution to assist them in their writing. This study investigated the effects of a computer graphic organizer on the persuasive writing compositions of Hispanic middle school students with SLD. A multiple baseline design across subjects was used to examine its effects on six dependent variables: number of arguments and supporting details, number …
