Survey Research To Assess Secondary School Teachers' Disposition And Readines For Teaching Mathematics To English Language Learners, Rosa Isela Gonzalez
Survey Research To Assess Secondary School Teachers' Disposition And Readines For Teaching Mathematics To English Language Learners, Rosa Isela Gonzalez
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Our society is built with ethnic minorities who in many cases do not speak English. This is the case of ELL students who need to learn mathematics. ELLs need to learn math and teachers are a major part of that process. The purpose of the study was to identify mathematics teachers' beliefs and teaching practices with respect to ELLs. A survey on ELL Education was administered to 42 grade 6-10 educators who attended a summer inservice in July 2009. The survey questions were then categorized into six groups related to the research questions and analyzed with SPSS to address a …

"I Can Do It" And You Can, Too : Toddlers And Autonomy In A Multicultural Classroom, Chelssi Lynn Michelle Parrott
Graduate Research Papers
This article will define autonomy and its relationship to learning and development in an infant or toddler classroom. It will discuss the differing cultural views concerning autonomy and the challenges this can bring to a culturally diverse classroom. It will give examples of what the development of autonomy looks like in my own classroom, and I will also share the guidelines that I keep in mind when encouraging autonomy with infants and toddlers.
Military Children And Holistic Education: A Narrative Reflection On Classroom Practice, Edith Allison
Military Children And Holistic Education: A Narrative Reflection On Classroom Practice, Edith Allison
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation uses autobiographical narrative inquiry as a source of knowledge-generating reflection to examine how the educational needs of military children might be met through the use of holistic educational practices rather than a (well-intentioned) traditional, standardized curriculum. Data were gathered through observation; personal experience as a military child, military member, mother of military children and teacher of military children; journal entries and vicarious experiences shared by students, parents, educators and other invested in this population of learners. Experiences were compiled into fictional composites to protect the identity of all parties as well as national security. These composites were then …

"Courageous Conversations": Rural South Georgia Teachers Reflecting On The Role Of Race And Racism In The Education Of Rural South Georgia Students, Lawanda P. Gillis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Author's abstract: The requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 has forced school systems throughout the United States to consider the achievement gap between White students and non-White students, which had not previously been a factor in determining school success for federal and state funding. However, acknowledging the gap is not enough. Schools must move beyond acknowledging the gap to developing strategies to close the gap. A professional development course entitled Courageous Conversations About Race, written by Curtis Linton and Glenn E. Singleton was taught to thirty-seven teachers in a rural South Georgia school system. Eight of …
Different Lattitudes, Different Attitudes: Educator Narratives Of A Professional Development In Honduras, Polly Stewart Holder
Different Lattitudes, Different Attitudes: Educator Narratives Of A Professional Development In Honduras, Polly Stewart Holder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Author's abstract:The curriculum studies field is marked by two significant concerns-the desire for a complex conversation about connection and diversity and the drive to address structural inequities. Drawing from the rich theoretical field of post positivist realism and in the intellectually rigorous tradition of curriculum studies, this inquiry traces the socioemotional and pedagogical development of five educators before and after a brief professional development experience abroad as they explored what a pedagogy of hope (Freire, 2004; Hooks, 2003) might look like. These five participants traveled to Honduras during the summer of 2009 with Heifer Project International (HPI), a non-profit, non …

What Information From Pisa Is Useful For Teachers? How Can Pisa Help Our Students To Become More Proficient?, Juliette Mendelovits, Dara Searle, Tom Lumley

A frequent objection to large-scale testing programs, both national and international, is that they are used as an instrument of control, rather than as a means of providing information to effect change. Moreover, concerns about large-scale testing often take the form of objection to the specific characteristics of the assessments as being prescriptive and proscriptive, leading to a narrowing of the curriculum and the spectre of 'teaching to the test' to the exclusion of more important educational content. Taking PISA reading literacy as its focus, this paper proposes, on the contrary, that a coherent assessment system is valuable in so …

Harry Potter And The Oppression Of Culturally And Linguistically Diverse U.S. Students, Claudia Peralta Nash, Celia King

The authors draw from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Rowling, 2003) to reflect on how the often unspoken insinuations as to who possesses cultural capital, and whose knowledge is valued in our schools, play an important role in what opportunities are provided. As educators, they use the fictional Hogwarts School of Magic to compare and confront the issues rooted in oppression that affect the lives of U.S. students, and reflect on how injustices affect children’s educational experiences.

When Is A Student An English Learner?: An Ethnographic Account Of When Students And Educators Invoke The Institutional Identity "English Language Learner", Leena Her
Leena N. Her
This article complicates the articulation of the achievement gap between native English speakers and English learners (ELs) as a problem rooted in English language proficiency. I challenge the institutional and popular imagination that 5.1 million ELs in the United States are "limited in English proficiency" and whose performance in school can be attributed to limited English proficiency. This argument is drawn from eighteen months of ethnographic fieldwork in a northern California High School where students identified as ELs were not a homogeneous-ability group with similar language needs. Yet there were occasions when educators echoed the concerns of education reformers and …

Rethinking Critical Literacy In The New Information Age, Panayota Gounari

This article looks at new information and communication technologies (ICTs) as sites of public pedagogy in that they produce particular forms of knowledge and literacies and reproduce representations that are always mediated through specific social relations. Public pedagogy as a process that constitutes a broader category beyond classroom practices, official curricula, and educational canons, extends to all sectors of human life, including virtual spaces. No longer restricted to traditional sites of learning such as educational or religious sites, public pedagogy produces new forms of knowledge and apprenticeship and new narratives for agency and for naming the world. Virtual spaces as …
Phonological Milestones For African American English-Speaking Children Learning Mainstream American English As A Second Dialect, Barbara Zurer Pearson, Shelley Velleman, Tiffany Charko, Timothy J. Bryant
Phonological Milestones For African American English-Speaking Children Learning Mainstream American English As A Second Dialect, Barbara Zurer Pearson, Shelley Velleman, Tiffany Charko, Timothy J. Bryant
Barbara Zurer Pearson
Purpose: This study provides milestones for phonological development in African American English (AAE) speakers learning Mainstream American English (MAE) as a second dialect for use by practicing speech-language pathologists. Method: The Dialect Sensitive Language Test (DSLT, Seymour et al., 2000) was administered to a nationwide sample of typically-developing children ages 4-12: 537 speakers of AAE as a first dialect and 317 speakers of MAE as a first dialect. DSLT items tested all consonant segments and many clusters of MAE in initial and final position. The age at which each dialect group reached 90% criterion for each segment in each position …

13 Nationality And Citizenship In Cyprus Since 1945: Communal Citizenship, Gendered Nationality And The Adventures Of A Post-Colonial Subject In A Divided Country, Nicos Trimikliniotis
Nicos Trimikliniotis
This paper examines the issues relating to citizenship and nationality in Cyprus since 1945 from the colonial times to independence. It examines the historical context and evolution of citizenship in Cyprus and then it analyses the legal aspects of the modes of acquisition and loss of citizenship. Finally it looks at the current debates and the challenges of gender equality, migration, Europeanisation and reunification.

The Cypriot Roma And The Failure Of Education:Anti-Discrimination And Multiculturalism As A Post-Accession Challenge, Nicos Trimikliniotis
Nicos Trimikliniotis
This covers the period prior to 2008. At its outset, this study explores the general context of the Roma in Cyprus and their identity as Cypriot citizens, their legal classification, cultural identity and population concentration. It then examines the legal framework within which the Roma of Cyprus are educated by describing the provisions regarding access to education, as well as recent legislation transposing the anti-discrimination acquis. According to the Constitution of the Cyprus Republic, the vast majority of Roma are classified as belonging to the ‘Turkish community’ without a minority rights status and as such their access to education in …
Annan V: Rethinking The Viability Of The Constitutional Arrangement And Its Future Importance, Nicos Trimikliniotis
Annan V: Rethinking The Viability Of The Constitutional Arrangement And Its Future Importance, Nicos Trimikliniotis
Nicos Trimikliniotis
This chapter argues that despite the post-colonial Zurich-London legacy and the flaws contained in the final version of the Annan Plan its central pillars provided the basis for a viable, workable and fair constitutional arrangement for both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The plan’s philosophy is in line with human rights conventions, UN resolutions, the EU Acquis and the High Level agreements of 1977 and 1979. It defines ‘a bizonal bicommunal federation with a single sovereignty, international personality and citizenship’. The alternative – the indefinite continuation of de facto partition, or a de jure partition, or a ‘return’ to a …

New Female Migration And Integration Related Policies In Cyprus [Co-Authored With Mihaela Fulias Souroulla], Nicos Trimikliniotis
Nicos Trimikliniotis
This chapter is a state of the art on the national context of Cyprus on the subject of integration and migration of mifgrant women. This is a rather problematic venture given that the literature available on the subject is mostly ‘international’ and as such we are forced to erect artificial ‘national’ or ‘state boundaries’ in order to confine the ambit of our work. Secondly, there is an inherent contextual problem relating to the de facto division of the country in which we are faced with the fact that Cyprus is a bi-communal and bilingual country, but due to budgetary reasons …

The Use And Abuse Of Undeclared And Unprotected Labour: Migration, Europeanisation And The Role Of Trade Unions, Nicos Trimikliniotis
Nicos Trimikliniotis
This paper considers the processes, the mechanisms and the social agency involved in what is a widespread phenomenon in Europe and the globe. The paper draws on experiences and knowledge from across Europe and beyond to illustrate the use and abuse of undeclared labour, particularly undocumented migrant labour within the process of European integration in order to consider ways to tackle it.

Native People And Systemic Bias In The Public Education System, John R. Fisher, Bayo Oludaja
Native People And Systemic Bias In The Public Education System, John R. Fisher, Bayo Oludaja
Dr. John R. Fisher
Although systemic bias may not be racism, it is a form of prejudice. Systemic bias exists throughout society in the practices and attitudes that people face on a daily basis. Very often educational programs are set up to accommodate special needs, but, although well meaning, they incorporate this form of bias. Systemic bias inhibits student progress and often presupposes the need for cultural change. This paper reports a study of Canadian Native people and their experience with the public school system. Interviews were held with 19 students, 24 parents and community members, and nine faculty/administrators to assess how systemic bias …
