The Face That Launched A Thousand Ships: Helen Of Troy In The Poetry Of Atwood And Tufts, Alea Walstrom

This paper considers the transformation of Greek myth over time, how character’s attributes change over time, and ultimately how contemporary poets employ these myths. The myth of focus in the paper is that of Helen of Troy and the depiction of her character throughout the many years and variations of the myth. Her character is then considered in the contemporary feminist poetry of Carol Tufts and Margaret Atwood.

Perceived Social Norms And Health Behaviors: Are College Drinking Behaviors Mediated By University Attachment?, John C. Wheeler

OSR Journal of Student Research

The purpose of this study was to assess school attachment in college students and alcohol use. High perceptions of peer alcohol use were expected to be positively correlated with rates of individual student use. Also, as students reported higher rates of attachment to their university, rates of alcohol use would decrease. Furthermore, it was expected that affiliation with a fraternity or sorority would alter the relationship between university attachment and alcohol use. Existing data from LaChausse’s (2012) CSUSB Student Health Survey was used; 311 participants completed the survey, which included measures of current alcohol and other drug use, perceived CSUSB …

Teacher perceptions of their students have been shown to play a key role in how teachers design and implement curriculum (Scruggs & Mastropieri, 1996) as well as how ‘connected’ a student feels within the classroom (McNeeley, Nonnemaker, & Blum, 2002). Undocumented college students are foreign nationals who illegally arrived in the United States and continue to reside in the United States without legal documentation. This study focuses in particular on the connections students make to their reading as seen through contextualized language usage. Many educators and curriculum developers suggest that using these new script-based curriculum will help teachers systematize and close gaps in teaching and learning. This thesis aims to investigate the issues surrounding California's Proposition 227, an important language policy passed in June of 1998 which drastically limited bilingual education. This proposition requires that all public school systems be in English only. Using a method known as Critical Discourse Analysis, this study exposes the underlying bias embedded in the discourse of newspaper articles from: the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register, and the Sacramento Bee.
