This paper examines the autobiography of Nelson Mandela Long Walk to Freedom. Using a formulation of critical reflection as the deliberate uncovering and challenging of assumptions concerning power and hegemony, Long Walk to Freedom is subjected to a thematic content analysis using the analytical heuristic of critical reflection.

In this paper, methodological challenges that emerged when conducting research with socially and economically disadvantaged young adults in a semi-rural community are examined. Recruitment and retention issues related to ethics protocols, trust, and economic disadvantage are addressed. Strategies governing bodies can employ to support research with difficult to reach populations are suggested.

This paper presents a preliminary framework for examining a feminist community group’s day to day conflicts, challenges and practical dilemmas, labeled as doublebinds. The research identifies the most commonly experienced dilemmas within a feminist community organization. It then discusses observed coping strategies of selection, vacillation, and source splitting.

Thirteen gay men between the ages of 40 and 60 relate stories of their lived experiences, demonstrating both adherence and resistance to heteronormative societal expectations regarding aging gay men. Outside The Circle: A Case Study Ofvolunteer Activities Of Adultswith Low Literacy Skills, Donna Anderson, Allan Quigley

This study of volunteer activities among 21 adults with low literacy skills in a social assistance program in Nova Scotia revealed attitudes and motivations relating to volunteerism among program recipients, as well as the six employment support workers who counselled them. Findings indicated that the definitions and understandings of “volunteerism” do not include “informal” volunteerism and client’s non-traditional volunteerism was ultimately discouraged by the counsellors, leading clients to slowly disengage from their community over time.
