Crafting The Strategy: Concepts And Cases In Sategic Management By Ranjan Das, New Delhi: Tata Mcgraw Hill, 2000., S D Kshirsagar

IIMB Management Review

This quotation summarises aptly the dichotomy of approaches to strategy as an encompassing concept and to its implementation in a business. If strategy is a science in all its facets, its descriptive or normative theories could be applied to a business situation. Seminal contributions in this respect made by H Igor Ansoff, Kenneth R Andrews and others, established that ‘sustained performance’ is determined by a firm’s ability to find a fit among its intrinsic capabilities, the environmental factors, and the strategy it adopts. In this sense, strategy is not only contextual but also resource specific. It is, therefore, dynamic and …

Corporate Strategies: A Comprehensive Handbook Based On Indian Experience: By Bani P Banerjee, New Delhi: Oxford University Press, 1998., K R S Murthy

IIMB Management Review

These are two very different, but complementary, books on strategy. Strategy is a term used widely with different meanings and in different contexts. It is often also used with various prefixes and suffixes, as in these two books. The basic notion of strategy underlying the two books, and therefore their approaches, differ, and it is important to understand the bias of the authors to be able to use the books properly.

Environmental And Psychological Challenges Facing Entrepreneurial Development In Transitional Economies, Fred Luthans, Alexander D. Stajkovic, Elina Stajkovic Jan 2000

Environmental And Psychological Challenges Facing Entrepreneurial Development In Transitional Economies, Fred Luthans, Alexander D. Stajkovic, Elina Stajkovic

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

In the former planned economies, a major result of the economic reform programs has been the resurgence of private entrepreneurship. As these countries have struggled to make the transition to a market-based economy over the past decade, the environment has played an important structural role in entrepreneurial development. However, from a psychological perspective, the environmental structural context affects human action through cognitive processes such as self-regulation. Thus, we first identify and analyze the effect of the political, economic, legal, and cultural environment on the development of entrepreneurship in transitional economies, mainly using the former Soviet Union and particularly the Republic …

Environmental Ethical Decision Making In The U.S. Metal-Finishing Industry, Brenda L. Flannery, Douglas R. May Jan 2000

Environmental Ethical Decision Making In The U.S. Metal-Finishing Industry, Brenda L. Flannery, Douglas R. May

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

We investigated the individual and contextual influences shaping the environmental ethical decision intentions of a sample of managers in the U.S. metal-finishing industry in this study. Ajzen's (1991) theory of planned behavior and Jones's (1991) moral intensity construct grounded our theoretical framework. Findings revealed that the magnitude of consequences, a dimension of moral intensity, moderated the relation- ships between each of five antecedents-attitudes, subjective norms, and three perceived behavioral control factors (self-efficacy, financial cost, and ethical climate)- and managers' environmental ethical decision intentions. We then developed implications for theory and practice in environmental ethical decision making.

The Impact Of Culture On Feedback-Seeking Behavior: An Integrated Model And Propositions, Mary Frances Sully De Luque, Steven M. Sommer

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

In recent research scholars have addressed the issue of an individual's behavior in feedback-seeking activity and, except in scant studies, have virtually ignored the role of culture in this area. In this article we explore four cultural syndromes, based on past research, to form a cross-cultural model of feedback-seeking behavior. We advance propositions for the study of culture as a moderator to feedback-seeking behavior.

Knowledge Management And Organization In Malaysia, Koji Shiota Jan 2000

Knowledge Management And Organization In Malaysia, Koji Shiota

Student Works (2000-2009)

The term 'Industrial society' has been a proper one to explain the wide and deep influence of the industrialization to the society and the wealth of the country in 20th century. Its related concepts and theories such as division of labour, specialization, standardization, mass-production, learning curb, scale economy and others explained well the corporate competitiveness especially from the viewpoint of 'efficiency' and '(financial) capital'. After 1960s some people began to describe the new paradigm such as Daniel Bell's 'Postindustrial society' and Albin Tofler's 'The third wave.' These three decades we have seen the shift from industrial economy to service economy …

Using Strategic Partnerships To Create A Sustainable Competitive Position For Hi-Tech Start-Up Firms, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In most cases these companies chose or were forced to engage in a technology partnership in order to develop and survive. As one would expect, some of these partnerships succeeded whilst others failed. With hindsight it occurred to the author that success or failure was not necessarily a random event, or idiosyncratic to one particular company, but that there seemed to be a pattern. Some partnerships failed because they were a strategic misfit, others probably because they were badly implemented. Based on these clinical case studies, The author addresses these questions: when and under what conditions a partnership is needed; …

Competitive Interaction: The Influence Of Strategic Group Structure, Sherry M. Burlingame Apr 1999

Competitive Interaction: The Influence Of Strategic Group Structure, Sherry M. Burlingame

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The assertion that competitive interaction is a central focus of business strategy emerged from the Strategic Management Research Group (SMRG) at the University of Maryland. The premise of this perspective is that competition among firms can be modeled using communication theory to explain how firms in an industry interact. Competition, in this framework, is represented as the series of actions and counteractions, termed responses, that firms undertake to position themselves in their industry. Thus, in this model, interaction (actions and responses) equates with competition. Studies conducted by the members of the SMRG have outlined the relationship of key variables within …
