Head Hunting In The Nhl Playoffs: Not The Beautiful Game Seen In The Olympics, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Is it just me or does headhunting in the National Hockey League look to be on the rise in this new playoff season?

The Bad And Ugly: Cell Phones Invade The Arena, Canadian Athem Booed, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 2002

The Bad And Ugly: Cell Phones Invade The Arena, Canadian Athem Booed, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It has been one of those weeks when the good, the bad, and the ugly have appeared on my television screen - In sports, not in the news. In two cases, the bad and the ugly, fans are at center stage.

Caught In Eurosport World - What I Saw And What I Missed, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 2002

Caught In Eurosport World - What I Saw And What I Missed, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

I have been away for the last two weeks, off into the land of EuroSport where real men play real sports in which feet figure heavily. As a result I have missed much of the action of the first two weeks of the baseball season, except for an occasional glimpse at a Mets or Yankee highlight, which seem to be the only baseball fragments shown on CNN World News.

The U Conn Women And The State Of Women's Sport, Richard C. Crepeau Apr 2002

The U Conn Women And The State Of Women's Sport, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

In the Final Four that concluded yesterday in San Antonio basketball with a retro look graced the hardwood court (or was it some synthetic composite) for the first time in years. Those who have watched the University of Connecticut glide with precision to their undefeated season and NCAA Championship have been treated to a brand of basketball emphasizing team play, sharp cuts and passes, and a group of women who play with great intensity and joy.

The Beauty And Corrupting Power Of March Madness, Richard C. Crepeau Mar 2002

The Beauty And Corrupting Power Of March Madness, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

March Madness has the power to mesmerize a nation. It has done so to me. The games of the past two weekends offered precisely the sort of thing that makes college basketball so compelling and entertaining.

Contraction, Baseball, The Courts, The Commissioner, And The Sale Of The Red Sox, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It should be noted that the Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, Kathleen A. Blatz, signed the ruling in which the court refused to review a lower court decision preventing the contraction of the Minnesota Twins in Bud Selig's master plan for major league baseball.

Olympic Impressions: Drugs, Judging, High Quality Hockey, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Looking back on the two plus weeks of the Winter Olympics a number of things stand out. As I have noted here this was an extraordinary experience for me as I had never been to any Olympics before. Beyond that I would like to look at three areas that seem of some significance to me.

The Mormons, The Olympics, The Fans, And The Venues, Richard C. Crepeau Feb 2002

The Mormons, The Olympics, The Fans, And The Venues, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The opportunity to attend the Winter Olympics was something I never really thought I would have, but due to a number of coincidental circumstances and the generosity of friends I was able to attend the first ten days of the games.

The Olympics On Tv And Live And In Person, Richard C. Crepeau Feb 2002

The Olympics On Tv And Live And In Person, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The Olympic experience in person is considerably, perhaps even radically, different from the Olympic experience on television, especially American television. NBC's "virtually live" Olympics, which we were told was necessary during the games from Sydney because of the great time difference, continues at the Winter Games for some complex of other bogus reasons offered up by NBC.

Ski Jumping At The Olympics, Richard C. Crepeau Feb 2002

Ski Jumping At The Olympics, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The first thing that you need to know coming from Florida is that it is called the Winter Olympics because it takes place in the winter. Therefore it is cold. At times it is bitterly cold, but most of the time it is just cold. As this was my first Olympics and the Winter Games are my favorite none of this mattered as we headed off for Olympic Park and the 90m ski jumping competition on Sunday.

Patriotism And The Super Bowl - Drugs And Sport, Richard C. Crepeau Feb 2002

Patriotism And The Super Bowl - Drugs And Sport, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Watching the Super Bowl on Sunday one could not avoid being moved by some aspect or another of the patriotism on display. 9/11 remains strong in the memory of us all and as I noted last September sport does provide us with opportunities for collective mourning, remembrance, and expressions of patriotism. I also noted that it is a characteristic of Americans to move toward excess in almost everything we do in public ritual.

Excess And The Internet At The Super Bowl, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2002

Excess And The Internet At The Super Bowl, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Is there anyone alive in the United States today who does not know that the Super Bowl is coming up on Sunday? It is Super Bowl XXXVI, thirty-six in real numbers, and will be played in what should be the permanent home of the Super Bowl, New Orleans. There is no venue more appropriate, save perhaps Vegas, for this mid-winter festival of conspicuous consumption and conspicuous waste, not be mention decadence, in these high holy days of the American Empire.

Capriati's Comeback Capped At The Australian Open - Ty Tryon's Meltdown, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2002

Capriati's Comeback Capped At The Australian Open - Ty Tryon's Meltdown, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It was just a year ago that Jennifer Capriati completed her remarkable and inspiring comeback with a victory in the Australian Open. She went on to win the French Open last year, her second grand slam victory, in what was certainly her best year of tennis since the early days before she hit the wall and her career disintegrated.

The Unwritten Rules Of Nba Officiating: When Will Mark Cuban Learn, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2002

The Unwritten Rules Of Nba Officiating: When Will Mark Cuban Learn, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

As Dallas Mavericks' owner Mark Cuban goes off to manage a Dairy Queen today it is a reminder not only of his insult of NBA referees but of three basic facts of American life. First, it takes no particular intelligence to become a billionaire. Second, some people have way too much money. And third, it is an absolutely futile exercise to criticize the referees in the National Basketball Association.

Beaten To Death On Ice: Out Of Control Parents And Youth Sports, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2002

Beaten To Death On Ice: Out Of Control Parents And Youth Sports, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

On Friday forty-four year old Thomas Junta was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Costin on July 5, 2000 in the Boston suburb of Reading. This piece of news is nothing extraordinary as similar items can be found in most daily newspapers across the country once or twice a year. What made this case of extraordinary interest across America, put it on Court TV, and attracted extensive coverage on the 24/7 news channels was the particular setting and circumstances of the case.

David Zang's Sportswars: A Review, Richard C. Crepeau Jan 2002

David Zang's Sportswars: A Review, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Every now and then I read a book that for some reason strikes a particular chord with me. This doesn't make it a great book, but for me it is an important book because it evokes significant emotional or intellectual responses. When that happens I generally tell everyone I know that they need to read this new book.

Steve Spurrier Resigns, Dennis Green Fired, Ty Williamham Hired - More Bcs, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

If the first few days of the New Year there are many indications 2002 could turn out to be much more than simply a palindromic delight. The seismic rumblings out of Gainesville, Florida yesterday overshadowed the Category Five Hurricane that swept from California to Nebraska on Thursday. The totally unexpected resignation by Steve Spurrier as Gator football coach would easily have overshadowed such an action by the governor of the state, and perhaps even that of the governor's brother. It has been front-page news across Florida for two days now, and local television news has been overrun by this story …

It's All Relative: A Study On The Acceptance Of Family Employment In College Athletics, Jennifer E. Cirillo Jan 2002

It's All Relative: A Study On The Acceptance Of Family Employment In College Athletics, Jennifer E. Cirillo

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Nepotism is a dirty little word: Related individuals work together in entertainment, medicine, education and yes, even sports administration. This study proposes to identify the acceptance of relatives, by blood or by marriage, working together in NCAA Division II colleges in the southeastern United States. "Nepotism" is an arguably accurate descriptor of arrangements of relatives working together. However, the potential for real as well as asserted preferential treatment is shown to exist. Further, as the trend of couples working in the same discipline grows, whether or not a candidate accepts a position may be determined by the potential manager's acceptance …

The Year Of Sport And Society In Review, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Normally I don't do a year in review piece although I think I did review the year in Sport and Society one time. I will do it because of the fact that one event so dominated American consciousness this past year that it will make this calendar year a very memorable and special one.

"Ali" The Film: A Review, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Across the world in this century there is no other sports figure better known and more admired than Muhammad Ali. In the United States there may be no sports figure more admired and reviled in any century than Muhammad Ali. For these and other reasons the opening of the film "Ali" today is a much-anticipated event.

George O'Leary And Notre Dame's Integrity, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 2001

George O'Leary And Notre Dame's Integrity, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

George O'Leary's tenure as head football coach at the University of Notre Dame was shorter than even his most vehement detractors had predicted. It took him only five days to self-destruct which could be a NCAA record.
