Firing And Conspiring At Existo’S Springfield Operation: Parts A & B, Jason Mirabella, Barry Armandi, Herbert Sherman

Organization Management Journal

Firing a sales staff which acts in an immoral and illegal manner may appear to be an easy solution, but, as the staff at Existo’s finds out, is only the tip of the iceberg of the company’s real problems. Students are confronted in this two-part case with two critical decision points: In Part A one of Existo’s customers has in her possession a seemingly fraudulent letter from one of the exsalesman from the Springfield operation which offered the customer a higher discount than the original contract agreement. Students are asked how to proceed from the CFO’s perspective given the firm’s …

Finding Ob In Disney's Finding Nemo, Rayshad A. Holmes

Organization Management Journal

One of the greatest challenges faced by new professors and those aspiring to become members of the academy is the consistent need to illustrate organizational behavior concepts to undergraduate students (Hunt, 2001). Most of today’s undergraduate population find themselves encased in a world permeated with fashion, music and little understanding of business principles. For this reason, it is incumbent upon business faculty members to continually create new and inspiring teaching interventions that illustrate business principles and concepts in action. From 12 Angry Men to The Brady Bunch, management faculty have enhanced the learning process of under-graduates with cinema that highlights …

Weaver’S Cove Energy Versus The City Of Fall River, Massachusetts: An Experience In The Concepts Of Stakeholders, Economic Impact, And Social Obligation/Social Responsibility, Susan M. Bosco, W. Brett Mckenzie, Kathleen S. Micken Sep 2005

Weaver’S Cove Energy Versus The City Of Fall River, Massachusetts: An Experience In The Concepts Of Stakeholders, Economic Impact, And Social Obligation/Social Responsibility, Susan M. Bosco, W. Brett Mckenzie, Kathleen S. Micken

Organization Management Journal

This experiential exercise, designed for our introductory business course, uses a classroom debate to teach the concepts of stakeholders, social obligation/social responsibility, and ethical frameworks for decision-making. The basis for the debate is the request by Weaver’s Cove Energy to construct and operate a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility in Fall River, Massachusetts. Weaver’s Cove has proposed the facility for an abandoned industrial site on the waterfront. The exercise addresses the three learning goals listed above through readings, position construction, and the debate itself. The rationale for the assignment and the chosen pedagogy are presented. Additionally, the materials used to …

Audiences are constantly bombarded by a whole host of bland catchphrases. Indeed, their verygeneration is viewed as a necessary part of the art of modern media communication. Complexand contested issues are forcibly reduced to snappy and memorable phrases so as to be quicklydigested by an apparently impatient and inattentive audience. In some respects capturing theattention of the audience is more important than the precision of the statement. If we were tosurvey the most frequently uttered phrases, some of the following would very likely be in the topten: `Markets are more competitive than ever', `we live in a truly globalized world', …

Understanding Interpersonal Trust In A Confucian-Influenced Society: An Exploratory Study, Hwee Hoon Tan, Dave Chee

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Adopting a qualitative methodology, this exploratory study examined the construct of trust and its factors of trustworthiness as perceived in a Confucian-influenced society. The findings of our study indicated that there are emic differences in the meaning of trust as perceived in a Confucian-influenced setting. Specifically, we found a heavy reliance on affective factors of trustworthiness in the decision to trust. In addition, we found a number of factors unique to the context that facilitates the development of trust: diligence, perseverance, filial piety, thriftiness, respect for authority, a shared value of collective effort, harmonious relationship in the office, humbleness and …

Few studies have examined the relationship between customer injustice and employees’ retaliatory counterproductive behaviors toward customers, and those that have done so were conducted in a Western setting. We extend these studies by examining the relationship in a Singaporean context where retaliatory behaviors by employees might be culturally constrained. While the previously-established positive relationship between customer injustice and counterproductive behaviors was not replicated using peer-reported data from employees across two hotels in Singapore, we found that individuals’ self-efficacy and perceived social support moderated it. Specifically, the injustice-to-counterproductive behaviors relationship was positive for individuals with high self-efficacy, and for those who …

Regret In Cancer-Related Decisions, Terry Connolly, Jochen Reb Jul 2005

Regret In Cancer-Related Decisions, Terry Connolly, Jochen Reb

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Decision-related regret is a negative emotion associated with thinking about a past or future choice. The thinking component generally takes the form of a wish that things were otherwise and involves a comparison of what actually did or will take place with some better alternative--a counterfactual thought. For predecisional (anticipated) regret, the thinking involves a mental simulation of the outcomes that might result from different choice options. Prior research has focused on regret associated with decision outcomes, addressing especially (a) the comparison outcome selected and (b) whether the outcome resulted from action or inaction. More recent research examines regret associated …

The Effects Of Price Regulation On Pharmaceutical R&D And Innovation, Heather M. O'Neill, Lena Clarissa Crain Jun 2005

The Effects Of Price Regulation On Pharmaceutical R&D And Innovation, Heather M. O'Neill, Lena Clarissa Crain

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

As rising health care expenditures focus government attention on slowing the growth, the pharmaceutical industry comes under increasing pressure to curb prices of ethical drugs. Pharmaceutical price regulations have been implemented in many countries to control pharmaceutical expenditures. Yet, creating innovative drugs requires enormous R&D costs, which in turn require adequate expected economic returns. Since price controls reduce profits and expected returns, as countries invoke stricter price regulations, firms will either move their R&D process into less regulated markets or move out of innovative R&D. This paper assesses the impact of drug price regulations in Japan compared to market-priced drugs …

Spirituality: A Way To Alternate Subjectivity?, Mihaela Kelemen, Tuomo Peltonen May 2005

Spirituality: A Way To Alternate Subjectivity?, Mihaela Kelemen, Tuomo Peltonen

Organization Management Journal

This paper emphasizes the contribution of Michel Foucault and Pierre Hadot to discussions of workplace spirituality. It is argued that their understanding of spirituality differs significantly from the mainstream management contributions: they view spirituality as a distinct form of post-modern subjectivity in organizations and regard the subject as continuous flow emerging and being constructed not so much at the crossroad of institutions and macro-structures but from within, with the help of self-formation practices. We term the latter spirituality and argue, firstly, that there are strong (albeit controversial) connections between spiritual practices, the history of Christianity, and the philosophy of antiquity. …

Should Critical Management Studies And Organization Development Collaborate? Invitation To A Contemplation, Maxim Voronov May 2005

Should Critical Management Studies And Organization Development Collaborate? Invitation To A Contemplation, Maxim Voronov

Organization Management Journal

In this article, the author argues that despite important differences between Critical Management Studies (CMS) and Organization Development (OD), there is enough common ground to make a dialogue worthwhile for both fields and for management practice. The author outlines some major "objectives" of each field, noting some important but frequently overlooked similarities and complementarities between them. Power and empowerment are offered as examples of focal topics around which the two disciplines could have a productive discussion, suggesting that such an exchange would help CMS’ important insights about power to have more of an impact on organizational practice while enhancing OD's …

Job Satisfaction Among United States Air Force Security Forces Personnel Post-1997 Career Field Merger, James Harrison Popphan May 2005

Job Satisfaction Among United States Air Force Security Forces Personnel Post-1997 Career Field Merger, James Harrison Popphan

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research was conducted to determine factors contributing to job satisfaction among US Air Force Security Forces personnel. Previous research conducted prior to major structural changes within the career field in 1997 and increased operations tempo due to the Global War on Terror was of questionable current pertinence. Job satisfaction has been shown to directly affect retention and performance. Retention is extremely important within the career field due to a personnel shortage of 8,000 troops. The current research closely followed the research design used by Michael Reiner to assess job satisfaction in the career field in 1997, and compares current findings …

Subethnische Dimensionen Des Veraenderungsmanagements In Asiatischen Klein- Und Mittelunternehmen: Trends In Singapur, Ulrike Badibanga, Thomas Menkhoff

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Against the background of a rapidly changing business environment, the article examines the organisational change management behavior of the owner-managers of small and medium-sized enterprises in Singapore. The analysis of survey data is aimed at ascertain whether there are any differences between Chinese and English-educated small (Chinese) businessmen in terms of Change Management (CM), a dichotomy which is of great historical and politico-cultural significance in Singapore. The survey data show that there are indeed differences between the subgroups (e.g. with regard to the initiation of a more participatory people management style) but these variations turned out to be far less …

The Impact Of Ownership Structure On Wage Intensity In Japanese Corporations, Toru Yoshikawa, Phillip H. Phan, Parthiban David Apr 2005

The Impact Of Ownership Structure On Wage Intensity In Japanese Corporations, Toru Yoshikawa, Phillip H. Phan, Parthiban David

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The authors studied the effect of ownership structure on human capital investments as indicated by wage intensity, defined as the ratio of expenditure on employee wages to sales, in a sample of 996 Japanese manufacturing firms during their economic recession of 1998-2002. They found that domestic shareholders, with interests beyond financial considerations, enhance wage intensity, especially when performance is low, and thereby safeguard human capital investments. Foreign shareholders with sole interest in financial returns have an opposite effect; they reduce wage intensity when firm performance is low.

Interaction Between The Process Used To Introduce Change And The Personality Of Organizational Members: An International Test, Terry W. Riddle Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Organizations introduce change to strengthen organizational performance and improve effectiveness. Drawing from literature in the areas of organizational change and personality characteristics, this study seeks to uncover the influence personality has on an individual's readiness for change. Data were utilized from two previous studies that sampled both an American organization and a Korean organization. The administered questionnaires captured data pertaining to the individuals' perceptions of the change process, their personality attributes, and their readiness for change. Using a statistical method known as moderated multiple regression, the study examined whether personality moderates the impact the change process has on an individual's …

Assessment Centers In Belgium: The Results Of A Study On Their Validity And Fairness, Filip Lievens, Etienne Van Keer, Morel De Witte

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In Belgium, assessment centers have grown in popularity. Despite this growing popularity, the validity of these selection and development methods has not been examined in Belgium. Therefore, this study examines the predictive validity and fairness of an assessment center of a large bank. The sample consisted of 252 middle level managers. Results revealed that the assessment center provides a valid prediction of success in higher managerial positions. With respect to fairness, this assessment center also scores well. Virtually no significant differences between men and women and between Flemish and French speaking Belgians are found. These positive results might be explained …

Irony And Organizations: Epistemological Claims And Supporting Field Stories, Ulla Johansson, Ed., Jill Woodilla, Ed.

WCBT Faculty Publications

"Irony, in the writings of these scholars from different parts of the world, demonstrates once again that ""what"" we know is tenuous and at the same time closely intertwined with ""how"" we know and represent that knowledge. And while each chapter approaches irony from a slightly different angle, they share a common assumption - that irony can be used to enhance practice."

Rhythms Of Life: Antecedents And Outcomes Of Work-Family Balance In Employed Parents, Samuel Aryee, E. S. Srinivas, Hwee Hoon Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study examined antecedents and outcomes of a fourfold taxonomy of work-family balance in terms of the direction of influence (work-family vs. family-work) and type of effect (conflict vs. facilitation). Respondents were full-time employed parents in India. Confirmatory factor analysis results provided evidence for the discriminant validity of M. R. Frone' s (2003) fourfold taxonomy of work-family balance. Results of moderated regression analysis revealed that different processes underlie the conflict and facilitation components. Furthermore, gender had only a limited moderating influence on the relationships between the antecedents and the components of work-family balance. Last, work-family facilitation was related to the …
