Benefits From Funding The Msd Engineering List: A Fiscal Year 1999 Case Study, David L. Gehrich Mar 2004

Benefits From Funding The Msd Engineering List: A Fiscal Year 1999 Case Study, David L. Gehrich

Theses and Dissertations

Every year the Air Force Material Command (AFMC) funds the MSD Engineering list. The projects on the list are submitted by the Air Logistic Centers in order to address problems with the maintainability or reliability of a reparable part. AFMC funds the projects to determine the root cause of the problem and find the best solution to fix the part. Since the MSD Engineering list is funded in order to improve maintainability and reliability, not as a cost savings initiative, the actual benefits gained from the funds spent on the MSD Engineering list have not been identified. This thesis uses …

Mitigating Growth Cost For Mobility Readiness Spares Packages, Stephen D. Gray Mar 2004

Mitigating Growth Cost For Mobility Readiness Spares Packages, Stephen D. Gray

Theses and Dissertations

A Mobility Readiness Spares Package (MRSP) is an air-transportable package of spare parts configured for rapid deployment in support of conflict or war. Each package is tailored to support a specific scenario, for a specific type and number of aircraft without re-supply for the first 30 days of deployment. Inventory is limited to mission-critical spares. The high cost of airlift and spares drive a necessity to keep MRSPs as small as possible, yet robust enough to meet wartime goals. Historical MRSP inventories exhibit significant volatility and the subsequent growth of their inventory creates significant cost to the Air Force. Annual …

Analysis Of The Current Air Force-Specific Status Of Resources And Training System (Sorts) Reporting System, Tia A. Jordan Mar 2004

Analysis Of The Current Air Force-Specific Status Of Resources And Training System (Sorts) Reporting System, Tia A. Jordan

Theses and Dissertations

The status of resources and training system (SORTS) is a process that measures the health of units and wings in day-to-day preparedness and the ability to execute a major theater war or other scenario envisioned in the national security strategy. With talk of the current reporting system not accurately reflecting units readiness, it is time to evaluate the system to identify key problems and re-design the process to better reflect units capabilities. The objective of this thesis was to inform Air Force leadership of the current state of the SORTS system to ensure it was adequate. By surveying current MAJCOM, …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Base Support Resources On The Availability Of Air Mobility Command Aircraft, Christian E. Randall Mar 2004

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Base Support Resources On The Availability Of Air Mobility Command Aircraft, Christian E. Randall

Theses and Dissertations

The AMC Directorate of Logistics is responsible for ensuring AMC aircraft are available to accomplish the mission. Currently, however, the organization lacks an objective tool for assessing the impact of proposed operations on the health of the fleet, To improve this process, the Directorate has initiated the development of a Mobility Aircraft Availability Forecast (MAAF) simulation model designed to identify alternatives and associated impacts on aircraft availability, manpower, and cost. This research seeks to assist the MAAF development effort by identifying and demonstrating how different base support factors impact the availability of AMC aircraft. To address this research objective, multiple …

Closed-Loop Supply Chain Models With Product Remanufacturing, R. Canan Savaskan, Shantanu Bhattacharya, Luk N. Van Wassenhove Feb 2004

Closed-Loop Supply Chain Models With Product Remanufacturing, R. Canan Savaskan, Shantanu Bhattacharya, Luk N. Van Wassenhove

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The importance of remanufacturing used products into new ones has been widely recognized in the literature and in practice. In this paper, we address the problem of choosing the appropriate reverse channel structure for the collection of used products from customers. Specifically, we consider a manufacturer who has three options for collecting such products: (1) she can collect them herself directly from the customers, (2) she can provide suitable incentives to an existing retailer (who already has a distribution channel) to induce the collection, or (3) she can subcontract the collection activity to a third party. Based on our observations …

Constraint Programming For Scheduling, John J. Kanet, Sanjay L. Ahire, Michael F. Gorman Jan 2004

Constraint Programming For Scheduling, John J. Kanet, Sanjay L. Ahire, Michael F. Gorman

MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications

Our goal is to introduce the constraint programming (CP) approach within the context of scheduling. We start with an introduction to CP and its distinct technical vocabulary. We then present and illustrate a general algorithm for solving a CP problem with a simple scheduling example.

Next, we review several published studies where CP has been used in scheduling problems so as to provide a feel for its applicability. We discuss the advantages of CP in modeling and solving certain types of scheduling problems. We then provide an illustration of the use of a commercial CP tool (OPL Studio) in modeling …

Institutional Factors Influencing E-Business Adoption, Anand Jeyaraj, Deborah Balser, Charles Chowa, Gary Griggs Jan 2004

Institutional Factors Influencing E-Business Adoption, Anand Jeyaraj, Deborah Balser, Charles Chowa, Gary Griggs

ISSCM Faculty Publications

Studies of e-business adoption have generally been restricted to understanding organizational factors. Institutional factors provide an alternate explanation of the diffusion of e-business across organizations. We test the influence of coercive, normative, and mimetic pressures on first-time adoption of B2B and B2C innovations by organizations. We further propose that an organization’s response to institutional pressures may be affected by its distinctive organizational identity. Specifically, we hypothesize that those organizations that value innovation and customer service will be more likely to adopt e-business over time. We test the likelihood that the intensity of institutional pressures will vary over different time periods. …

Understanding The Relationship Between Organizational And Individual Adoption Of It Innovations: Literature Review And Analysis, Anand Jeyaraj, Joseph Rottman, Mary Lacity Jan 2004

Understanding The Relationship Between Organizational And Individual Adoption Of It Innovations: Literature Review And Analysis, Anand Jeyaraj, Joseph Rottman, Mary Lacity

ISSCM Faculty Publications

Researchers who study IT innovations aim to understand the relationship between two different loci of adoption1 – individual adoption and organizational adoption. A first step is diagnosis of the current state of empirical research on IT innovation adoption. We analyzed 486 relationships between independent variables (IVs) and dependent variables (DVs) found in 89 empirical studies of which 45 studied individual adoption and 44 studied organizational adoption. We categorized 135 IVs into 4 classes (organizational variables such as top management support, individual variables such as age, innovation variables such as relative advantage, and environment variables such as external pressure). We classified …

Metaheuristics With Local Search Techniques For Retail Shelf-Space Optimization, Andrew Lim, Brian Rodrigues, Xingwen Zhang Jan 2004

Metaheuristics With Local Search Techniques For Retail Shelf-Space Optimization, Andrew Lim, Brian Rodrigues, Xingwen Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Efficient shelf-space allocation can provide retailers with a competitive edge. While there has been little study on this subject, there is great interest in improving product allocation in the retail industry. This paper examines a practicable linear allocation model for optimizing shelf-space allocation. It extends the model to address other requirements such as product groupings and nonlinear profit functions. Besides providing a network flow solution, we put forward a strategy that combines a strong local search with a metaheuristic approach to space allocation. This strategy is flexible and efficient, as it can address both linear and nonlinear problems of realistic …

Heuristics For A Brokering Set Packing Problem, Yunso Guo, Andrew Lim, Brian Rodrigues, Yi Zhu Jan 2004

Heuristics For A Brokering Set Packing Problem, Yunso Guo, Andrew Lim, Brian Rodrigues, Yi Zhu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this paper we formulate the combinatorial auction brokering problem as a Set Packing Problem (SPP) and apply a simulated annealing heuristic to solve SPP. Experimental results are compared with a recent heuristic algorithm and also with the CPLEX Integer Programming solver where we found that the simulated annealing approach outperforms the previous heuristic method and CPLEX obtaining results within smaller timescales.

Operational Hedging: A Review With Discussion, Onur Boyabatli, L. Beril Toktay Jan 2004

Operational Hedging: A Review With Discussion, Onur Boyabatli, L. Beril Toktay

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Motivated by the increasing prevalence of operational hedging in corporate-level risk management programs, this paper provides an extensive overview and synthesis of the existing literature on operational hedging. In particular, we focus on the treatment of operational hedging in the operations management literature. We then explore how the concept of operational hedging is studied in the fields of finance, strategy and international business. Finally, we discuss and critique the approaches adopted in the operations management literature in the context of the broader literature on the topic.
