Shippers Usage Of The Internet Including E-Marketplaces In The Trucking Industry, John L. Kent, R Stephen Parker, Allen D. Schaefer
Journal of Transportation Management
The research reported in this manuscript provides insights regarding trucking related e-marketplaces and web-based offerings by truckers. Over 2,000 shippers were surveyed with 420 total responses. Overall, only 7% of shippers were currently utilizing e-marketplaces; however, those that are appear to be satisfied. Shippers ranked tracking, freight posting, and pricing, in that order of importance for trucking web sites.
Logistics Education At Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Abdussalam A. Addus, Anwar S. Kahn, David Chen
Logistics Education At Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Abdussalam A. Addus, Anwar S. Kahn, David Chen
Journal of Transportation Management
A review of research literature on logistics education reveals disparities between demand for and supply of logistics management skills. Racial minorities are relatively underrepresented in logistics education and professional careers. In order to meet the rising demand for college graduates and mitigate racial disparities in the field, a need arises to enhance logistics education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s). HBCU’s are known to have a high rate of success in retaining and graduating African American students. Yet, only a few of these institutions offer logistics degree programs or concentrations within the business and social science majors. This article …
A Correlation Study Of Second Destination Transportation Funding And Vehicle Movement, Stephen D. Wier
A Correlation Study Of Second Destination Transportation Funding And Vehicle Movement, Stephen D. Wier
Theses and Dissertations
HQ AFMC has consistently experienced problems with the Second Destination Transportation budget being under funded. This under funding causes the command to implement control actions on how funds are allocated to ensure that enough funds are available. This research effort was intended to show the relationship between spending restrictions and how vehicles move between theaters. By identifying whether or not and how the control actions on Second Destination Transportation funding affects inter-theater vehicle movement capabilities, this research seeks to assist those decision makers in making fully informed decisions when allocating scare fiscal resources. The results of this research indicate that …
Effects Of Three Types Of Free-Stall Surfaces On Preferences And Stall Usage By Dairy Cows, Cassandra B. Tucker, Daniel M. Weary, David Fraser
Effects Of Three Types Of Free-Stall Surfaces On Preferences And Stall Usage By Dairy Cows, Cassandra B. Tucker, Daniel M. Weary, David Fraser
Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection
One important criterion in choosing appropriate housing systems for dairy cattle is that the freestall provides a comfortable surface for the cow. This paper describes two experiments testing the effects of commonly used lying surfaces on stall preference and stall usage by Holstein cows. In both experiments, 12 cows were housed individually in separate pens. Each pen contained three free stalls with a different surface: deep-bedded sawdust, deep-bedded sand, and a geotextile mattress covered with 2 to 3 cm of sawdust. The animals were restricted to each surface in turn, in a random order for either 2 (Experiment 1) or …

The Eu Ban On Battery Cages: History And Prospects, Michael C. Appleby
The Eu Ban On Battery Cages: History And Prospects, Michael C. Appleby
State of the Animals 2003
On June 15, 1999, the European Union (EU) passed a directive on the welfare of laying hens, requiring that battery cages (so called because they are arranged in batteries of rows and tiers) be phased out by 2012. Enriched laying cages (which may also be arranged in batteries but which provide increased area and height, when compared with conventional cages, and a perch, nest box, and litter area) will still be allowed. This chapter outlines how this directive came about, and the social, economic, and political issues involved. It considers prospects for the future, both within and outside the EU, …

Short-Line Railroad Managers Discuss Class I Railroads, James C. Johnson, Diane J. Mcclure, Kenneth C. Schneider, Donald F. Wood
Journal of Transportation Management
Managers/owners of short-line railroads were queried about three issues: (1) How would you describe your company’s business relationship with the Class I railroad(s) with which you interchange traffic; (2) Do you believe that mergers between Class I railroads have been good or bad for short-line railroads; and (3) Besides merger activity, what do you believe will be the most important trend for Class I railroads in the next 10 years?
Liberalization Of International Air Transportation Markets: The Effect Of Terrorism On Market Trends, Dawna L. Rhoades
Liberalization Of International Air Transportation Markets: The Effect Of Terrorism On Market Trends, Dawna L. Rhoades
Journal of Transportation Management
Since the United States deregulated its airline industry with the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, the international air transport industry has been on a path toward market liberalization. Market changes have included entry, capacity, and pricing freedom as well as increased levels of foreign ownership. The recent terrorist acts of September 11, 2001 have the potential to alter, if not reverse this course. This paper examines the forces fueling the trend toward liberalization and analyzes the impact of recent events on the future prospects of open aviation markets.

Examining Sources Of Driver Turnover From A Managerial Perspective, Hokey Min
Journal of Transportation Management
There is growing concern about the declining profitability of the U. S. trucking industry. Such concerns often stem from the increased difficulty of recruiting and retaining qualified drivers. In fact, the trucking industry has been hit hard by shortages of qualified truck drivers over the last two decades. To cope with this chronic problem, trucking firms have attempted to formulate various driver recruitment and retention strategies that include pay raises, bonuses, equipment improvement, and adjustments in working hours. This article provides trucking firms with the means to implement a more effective driver recruitment and retention strategy by examining sources of …

Where Have All The On-Line Grocers Gone? Lessons Learned From The Demise Of On-Line Grocers, M Theodore Farris Ii, Phil Wilson
Journal of Transportation Management
The grocery concept has evolved over many years to drive cost out of the process. Grocery margins are very thin, typically ranging from 1% to 1 1/2 % such that the grocery business continues to look for innovative ways to take cost out of the process. Ordering groceries on the Internet was initially thought to be a very promising new opportunity. So what happened to on-line grocers? This paper considers what went right and what went wrong for the on-line grocers and uncovers a few logistics lessons along the way.
The Impact Of Lumper Costs, Empty Miles, And Shipment Size On The Profitability Of Motor Carriers: A Case Study, Hokey Min
Journal of Transportation Management
The passage of landmark deregulatory reforms in the Motor Carrier of Act of 1980 has constantly pressured the U.S. trucking industry to reduce transportation costs. Thanks to such pressure, total logistics costs have declined from 16.5% in 1980 to 10.1% of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2000. In particular, transportation costs have fallen from 7.6% to 5.9% of GDP in 2000. Transportation cost savings definitely benefit shippers, while jeopardizing the viability of carriers. To help transportation carriers cope with enormous cost pressure, this paper examines the impact that “lumper” costs, empty miles, and shipment size have on the very competitive …
An Analysis Of Intermodal Transport Carrier Selection Criteria For Pacific-Rim Imports To New England, Shashi N. Kumar, Vijay Rajan
An Analysis Of Intermodal Transport Carrier Selection Criteria For Pacific-Rim Imports To New England, Shashi N. Kumar, Vijay Rajan
Journal of Transportation Management
The introduction of double stack rail services opened up a variety of transportation options for shippers located in the North Eastern parts of the U.S. The availability of transcontinental double stack service from the Canadian West Coast has increased this option even further particularly because of a recent new service introduced by a small U.S. railroad company. The paper uses Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology to provide a decision-making framework for the intermodal choices of shippers located in the region suitable for duplication elsewhere where similar options exist.
The Case For U.S. High Speed Rail, Drew Stapleton, Melissa Cooley, Darlene Goehner, Daoud Jandal
The Case For U.S. High Speed Rail, Drew Stapleton, Melissa Cooley, Darlene Goehner, Daoud Jandal
Journal of Transportation Management
High-speed rail is a form of self-guided ground transportation, which utilizes steel-wheels or magnetic levitation (i.e., Maglev) and can travel in excess of 200 miles per hour. High-speed ground transportation (i.e., HSGT) has been widely used in Europe and Asia, but the debate continues over the usefulness of high-speed rail in the United States. Several metropolitan areas in the United States have been identified as corridors that would benefit from HSGT. High speed rail can offer an alternative or a compliment to over-the-road and air transportation. Initial investment cost for this mode of transportation are high, but other factors such …

Progress In Livestock Handling And Slaughter Techniques In The United States, 1970–2000, Temple Grandin
Progress In Livestock Handling And Slaughter Techniques In The United States, 1970–2000, Temple Grandin
State of the Animals 2001
Promoting better stockmanship is essential to improving animal welfare. Large meat-buying customers such as fast-food restaurants in the United States and supermarket chains in the United Kingdom can motivate great change by insisting that suppliers uphold better animal welfare standards. The greatest advances of the last thirty years have been the result of company audits. To maintain such progress, handling and stunning must be continually audited, measured, and managed. Handlers tend to revert to rough handling unless they are monitored and managed. An objective scoring system provides a standard that can be upheld. An overworked employee cannot do a good …

To determine whether tail docking would influence cow cleanliness and udder health in a free-stall system, we monitored milking cows after half the animals in a herd were docked. A sample of 223 docked and 190 undocked cows (reducing to 169 and 105 over the study as cows were dried off) were monitored for 8 wk. Cow cleanliness was scored in two areas: along the spine, and the rump adjacent to the tail at 1, 2, 3, 5, and 8 wk after docking. Cleanliness was evaluated by counting squares that were soiled (0 to 14 on a 5- × 17.5-cm …

Preliminary Assessment Of Client Interest In And Needs Of The New England Environmental Finance Center, New England Environmental Finance Center, University Of Southern Maine
Planning
The New England Environmental Finance Center (NE/EFC) has been conceived as a knowledge-based clearinghouse, training, and change-agent program aimed at helping EPA's constituencies find financially successful approaches to environmental improvements. The NE/EFC will develop approaches to needs of particular priority in New England and potentially useful throughout the nation; share such approaches through the EFC national network; and help make tools from that network accessible throughout New England. In 1999 we began exploring with potential users how this ninth of the nation's EFCs might best address the region's needs. The assessment continued through the Muskie School's EFC proposal to EPA …
The Quality Movement And Organisation Theory By Robert E Cole And W. Richard Scott, New Delhi: Sage, 2000., Vijay G Vancheswar
The Quality Movement And Organisation Theory By Robert E Cole And W. Richard Scott, New Delhi: Sage, 2000., Vijay G Vancheswar
IIMB Management Review
The Quality Movement and Organisation Theory is different from most books on quality on two main counts. Firstly, it successfully addresses the issues of organisational change and emerging management practices, and their impact on Total Quality Management (TQM). Secondly, the concepts and findings detailed in the book combine the strengths of academic research studies on TQM and the vast experience of executives from leading organisations. Though focused primarily on the practices of TQM in the US, the book is exhaustive in its treatment of the subject. Starting with a lucid introduction to the quality movement and its linkages with issues …
Diversity Of Behaviour During Novel Object Tests Is Reduced In Pigs Housed In Substrate-Impoverished Conditions, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Marie Haskell, Michael T. Mendl, Sheena Calvert, Alistair B. Lawrence
Diversity Of Behaviour During Novel Object Tests Is Reduced In Pigs Housed In Substrate-Impoverished Conditions, Françoise Wemelsfelder, Marie Haskell, Michael T. Mendl, Sheena Calvert, Alistair B. Lawrence
Sentience Collection
Modern intensive farming conditions lack the diversity of substrates present in more natural environments and offer young animals fewer opportunities for interaction. Evidence exists that this may affect the organization of interactive patterns of behaviour, but shifts in behavioural diversity have not been measured directly. We investigated the effect of the substrate in the home pen on the diversity of behaviour in young growing pigs, Sus scrofa. Over 5 months, 26 pigs were housed singly in either substrate-impoverished (SI) or substrate-enriched (SE) conditions. Once every month we recorded the behaviour of these pigs in detail both in the home pens …
The Impact Of State Taxes On The Development And Growth Of The Trucking Industry, Thomas Lambert, Hokey Min
The Impact Of State Taxes On The Development And Growth Of The Trucking Industry, Thomas Lambert, Hokey Min
Journal of Transportation Management
The presence of certain state taxes is believed to have a negative impact on truck registration and the location decisions of trucking firms. For example, in a metropolitan area that covers two or more states, a trucking firm might not choose to locate in the county that is in close proximity to the metropolitan area’s business districts, population centers, and largest concentration of customers, if that county is in a state that imposes the taxes. Instead, it might choose to locate in a county that belongs to another state that does not impose such taxes as long as that county …
The Use Of Edi And Internet Technologies In The U.S. Motor Carrier Industry, Richard L. Clarke
The Use Of Edi And Internet Technologies In The U.S. Motor Carrier Industry, Richard L. Clarke
Journal of Transportation Management
Computer to computer data exchange by companies in a supply chain have been wellrecognized as an effective means of reducing cost and decreasing paperwork errors. In many cases, manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers have become electronically linked to better manage inventory, ordering, and billing information. However, supply chains, by definition, also include common carriers that move goods between supply chain partners but may not have a long-term relationship with either the shipper or his customers. This could be the missing or weak link in an otherwise effective supply chain. The purpose of this paper is to examine the state-of-the-art of EDI …

The Relationship Between The Functional Orientation Of Senior Managers And Service Quality In Ltl Motor Carriers, Patricia M. Poli, Carl A. Scheraga
Journal of Transportation Management
This study utilizes data envelopment analysis to examine the relationship between the functional heterogeneity of senior LTL motor carrier managers’ departmental positions and the relative efficiency of their companies in the production of quality customer service. Three measures from the Quest for Quality annual survey are utilized to measure customer satisfaction: on-time performance, value, and customer service. It is shown that data envelopment analysis can be used to assist LTL motor carriers in benchmarking the configuration of their managerial hierarchies against their peers in order to achieve the goal of customer satisfaction. The results of the present study confirm that …
