JOHNSON CITY – (Oct. 28, 2020) Following its first season of competition, the ETSU Esports Varsity Team has earned a spot in the Overwatch Fall Cup Playoffs hosted by the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE).
East Tennessee State University’s team rounded out its inaugural season 8-1 and finished second place in its group. NACE will announce the playoff brackets toward the end of this week. ETSU will begin the playoffs Monday evening at 8 p.m. The tournament games will be broadcast on Twitch and in the esports arena within the D.P. Culp Student Center.

JOHNSON CITY (Oct. 26, 2020) – Retired Maj. Gen. Gary Harrell became the fourth alumnus of East Tennessee State University’s Army ROTC Program inducted into Cadet Command’s Hall of Fame during a special ceremony recognizing his extraordinary military career.
Before earning his Green Beret and commanding special operation Delta Force in Somalia later chronicled in the book and film “Black Hawk Down,” Maj. Gen. Harrell was a student at ETSU and member of the Grantland Rice Bowl Championship football team in 1969.

The MHA prepares professionals to plan, direct and coordinate the business activities of health care providers. ETSU’s MHA has four areas of focus: finance; quality; policy and regulation; and people and partnerships.

(Oct. 26, 2020) Dr. Wilsie Bishop, Senior Vice President for Academics and Interim Provost, announced that she will retire on June 30, 2021, after a 43-year career at East Tennessee State University.
Bishop came to ETSU as a temporary faculty member in the College of Nursing in 1978. Since that time, she earned tenure and progressed through the faculty ranks, serving in administrative roles including department chair, dean, and assistant/associate vice president prior to becoming a vice president in 2005. JOHNSON CITY (Oct. 12, 2020) – The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded East Tennessee State University’s Dr. Chuanfu Li a $2.19 million R01 grant to research the role of lactate in sepsis-induced cardiovascular dysfunction.
Li is a professor in the Department of Surgery at Quillen College of Medicine and is also a member of the ETSU Center of Excellence in Inflammation, Infectious Disease, and Immunity (CIIDI). He was recently named one of the inaugural Quillen Distinguished Research Fellows.

With the spread of the Internet, e-mail has also steadily gained in relevance over the past years and decades. Especially in the form of newsletters, e-mail marketing is probably the most important channel of digital dialogue marketing today. This paper examines the carbon dioxide emissions of advertising e-mails in Germany on the basis of existing sources and compares them with the emissions caused by sending letters by post. Despite significantly lower CO2 emissions per piece compared to a letter, e-mails seem to be a much greater burden on the environment due to their practically unlimited scalability in terms of cost. …

American democracy is grounded in the idea of representation. “Representative bureaucracy” is the term for government entities employing a workforce that shares the demographic characteristics of the communities they serve, and the combined experiences and perspectives of that workforce represent and benefit all residents within its purview. This includes the thousands of government professionals who run the daily functions of municipalities within the State of Utah.

The annual “FL3TCH3R Exhibit: Social and Politically Engaged Art” at East Tennessee State University’s Reece Museum is a visual art forum inspired by and tailored for just that kind of expression.

Rapper Rico Nasty will perform Oct. 14.JOHNSON CITY – A Five Night Concert and Comedy Festival Series of virtual entertainment of East Tennessee State University students, faculty and staff begins Wednesday, Oct. 7.
These performances will be held virtually on Looped Live every Wednesday night at 9 p.m. Each event will include a live Q&A, and members of the campus community who register will be entered for a chance to win a one-on-one meet-and-greet with an act.
