JOHNSON CITY (Feb. 17, 2021) – “Black Men in White Coats,” a documentary film by Dr. Dale Okorodudu, is available to view at no charge for East Tennessee State University students, faculty and staff through 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20.
According to Okorodudu, fewer Black men applied to medical school in 2014 than in 1978, and Black men have the lowest life expectancy in the United States. Only 2% of American doctors are Black men. In his documentary, Okorodudu dissects the systemic barriers preventing Black men from becoming medical doctors and the consequences for society at large.

East Tennessee State University is saddened by the passing of Dr. Brian Odle, who died Monday, Feb. 15, 2021, at the age of 53.
Dr. Odle, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice, came to ETSU Bill Gatton College ofPharmacy in 2007. His unique teaching style combined memorable storytelling with practical knowledge. Dr. Odle was loved by his students, as well as faculty and staff.
Dr. Odle graduated from MTSU in 1990 with a degree in Biology. He then received his Doctor ofPharmacy degree from University of Tennessee, Memphis, in 1994. Dr. Odle completed a pharmacy practice residency at University of Maryland, …

JOHNSON CITY (Feb. 16, 2021) – The U.S. Department of Education has announced that East Tennessee State University will receive the federally funded Student Support Services (SSS) grant totaling $348,002 annually for five years to help more first-generation and low-income students and students with disabilities succeed and graduate. ETSU has been a recipient of an SSS grant to support traditional and non-traditional students since 1976.
The array of services the grant provides are comprehensive and include academic tutoring, financial literacy and financial aid advice, career exploration and planning, and other forms of assistance. Each year, ETSU’s TRIO staff work with …

JOHNSON CITY (Feb. 10, 2021) – A summer research program at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine led to an opportunity for medical students to gain COVID-19 research experience.
Dr. Donald Hoover, professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, mentored two second-year medical students, Fulton Robinson and Ryan Mihealsick, during Quillen’s Medical Student Summer Research Program held last summer. The students had the opportunity to participate in the conception, planning, implementation and publication of research focusing on cardiac morbidity and mortality related to COVID-19 infection.

All meetings will be conducted in person at the Martin Center for the Arts. Attendance will be limited to Trustees, presenters and support staff. All meetings will be livestreamed for public viewing.

JOHNSON CITY (Feb. 5, 2021) – The Roan Scholars Leadership Program has selected eight high school seniors for the incoming Roan Class of 2025. Those students will join 24 returning Roan Scholars at East Tennessee State University this fall as part of the prestigious four-year scholarship program.

JOHNSON CITY – (Feb. 3, 2021) A faculty member at East Tennessee State University is participating in a major research project helping persons with disabilities transition from the K-12 environment to new settings such as independent living, employment or post-secondary education.
ETSU is part of the National Technical Assistance Center on Transition for Students and Youth with Disabilities, an initiative led by the University of North Carolina-Charlotte that also includes researchers from George Washington University, University of Kansas, Portland State University, University of Maryland and University of Oregon.
