An Oreo With Chinese Characteristics, Srinivas K. Reddy May 2014

An Oreo With Chinese Characteristics, Srinivas K. Reddy

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In late 2005, Shawn Warren, head of biscuits, Asia Pacific for Kraft, was in desperate need of a quick turnaround strategy. Oreo, after nearly 10 years in the China market was facing the imminent disaster of being completely pulled from the shelves. Local retail channels, along with company headquarters near Chicago, had finally grown impatient of the iconic product's lacklustre sales. When Warren described the turnaround in March 2012, he said, "The first step to solving a problem is to admit you have one. We are committed to have this brand and put resources behind it."

Running And Chasing: The Competition Between Paid Search Marketing And Search Engine Optimization, Kai Li, Mei Lin, Zhangxi Lin, Bo Xing

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As search engine is leading the revenue growth in online marketing field, the competition of search engine marketing between paid search marketing (PSM) by search engine providers (SEPs), and search engine optimization (SEO) provided by search engine optimization firms, is white-hot. While PSM is simply for advertisers to buy the top ranks in sponsored links, SEO tries to optimize advertisers' websites by free-riding search engine's organic searching results. This study aims to investigate this competition by analytical modeling regarding organic search quality. We focus on sustainability conditions of SEO firms, investment analysis of SEO firms, and profit analysis of SEP. …

Social Networks Among Auction Bidders: The Role Of Key Bidders And Structural Properties On Auction Prices, Mayukh Dass, Srinivas K. Reddy, Dawn Iacobucci Jan 2014

Social Networks Among Auction Bidders: The Role Of Key Bidders And Structural Properties On Auction Prices, Mayukh Dass, Srinivas K. Reddy, Dawn Iacobucci

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Auctions have been studied extensively as an economic marketplace. The economist’s focus is on modeling final sales prices, but the processes that give rise to those outcomes are rarely studied in great detail. This research is intended to provide that complementary perspective. We show how the interactions between bidders in an auction unfold in a dynamic pattern of bids and counter-bids, and thereby over the duration of an auction, create a network structure. The auction network contributes significantly to models of price dynamics and the network predicts final sales prices better than economic (non-network) indicators alone. In addition, network analyses …

Facing Global Economic Crisis: Foreign Sales, Ownership Groups, And Corporate Value, Xufei Ma, Daphne W. Yiu, Nan Zhou Jan 2014

Facing Global Economic Crisis: Foreign Sales, Ownership Groups, And Corporate Value, Xufei Ma, Daphne W. Yiu, Nan Zhou

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study extends the research on internationalization to a new organizational context emerging market firms (EMF), and a new time context global economic crisis. We propose a U-shaped relationship between foreign sales intensity and firm value for EMFs during global economic crisis. Further, we distinguish between EMFs' relational owners (i.e., business groups) and transactional owners (i.e., institutional investors) to investigate their different moderating effects. We find empirical support for our hypotheses using a sample of Chinese firms during the global economic crisis in 2008. Moreover, we provide research and practice implications.

Ratings Lead You To The Product, Reviews Help You Clinch It? The Dynamics And Impact Of Online Review Sentiments On Products Sales, Nan Hu, Noi Sian Koh, Srinivas K. Reddy Jan 2014

Ratings Lead You To The Product, Reviews Help You Clinch It? The Dynamics And Impact Of Online Review Sentiments On Products Sales, Nan Hu, Noi Sian Koh, Srinivas K. Reddy

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

It is generally assumed that ratings are a numeric representation of text sentiments and their valences are consistent. This however may not always be true. Using a panel of data on over 4000 books from Amazon.com, we develop a multiple equation model to examine the inter-relationships between ratings, sentiments, and sales. We find that ratings do not have a significant direct impact on sales but have an indirect impact through sentiments. Sentiments, however, have a direct significant impact on sales. Our findings also indicate that the two most accessible types of reviews - most helpful and most recent - play …

Uncovering Collaborative Value Creation Patterns And Establishing Corresponding Customer Roles, Sabine Moeller, Robert Ciuchita, Dominik Mahr, Gaby Odekerken-Schroder, Martin Fassnacht

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Research on value creation traditionally has focused on value created by the company, though customers increasingly serve as active partners, able to create value with firms in a collaborative manner. Despite interest by both scholars and managers, existing research has not yet clarified the interdependencies of service offerings and customer role patterns. This article explores value creation rooted in three generic offerings (configuration, solution, and network) and identifies differences in their prerequisites, customer activities, challenges, abilities, ability enhancers, and perceived benefits that arise in collaborative value creation (CVC). Data from 105 collaborations, collected through in-depth interviews, support the qualitative and …

Despite the rising power of developing economies, few corporations from emerging markets have succeeded in establishing brands in the West. The problem isn't just that they're late to enter the global market; the perception is that they offer poor-quality products, not next-generation ones. Conventional wisdom holds that they'll have. to spend huge sums to overcome these obstacles. But some emerging giants, such as the Indian bank ICICI and the maker of the Mexican beer Tecate, are figuring out ways to build global brands on a shoestring. They are learning to outsmart, rather than outspend, their multinational rivals. One powerful strategy they're …

Sustainable Business Models: The Contribution Of Network Organization And Governance Modes, Sudhi Seshadri, Michael Ehret Aug 2013

Sustainable Business Models: The Contribution Of Network Organization And Governance Modes, Sudhi Seshadri, Michael Ehret

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We provide a framework for the design of sustainable business models. While extant literature on business models focuses on unlocking positive externalities, we propose a business model framework that effectively addresses negative externalities. A taxonomy-based on transorganizational models and governance modes - classifies instruments that counsel behaviour patterns. Sustainability strategies that deal with externalities often merge instruments to manage multi-stakeholder responsibilities and exchanges. The framework draws upon three established research themes - network organizational models, governance modes, and instrumental stakeholder theory - to distinguish between six instrument classes. To illustrate its potential for analysis the paper compiles instruments within these …

The Sustainability Syndicate: Shared Responsibility In A Trans-Organizational Business Model, Sudhi Seshadri Jul 2013

The Sustainability Syndicate: Shared Responsibility In A Trans-Organizational Business Model, Sudhi Seshadri

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper proposes design principles for the ‘sustainability syndicate’: shared responsibility among diverse stakeholders for sustainability; an agenda for unifying economic and ethical rationales; and plural governance based primarily on markets, contracts and collaborative relationships. The paper suggests a research agenda directed at issues that constrain sustainability syndicates. Syndication's contributions to sustainability build upon its trans-organizational structures for shared responsibility. Syndication works as an insurance cooperative that reduces the financial burden of risk. In addition, members could rent skill sets from other stakeholders, reduce barriers to entry into bigger projects, and improve efficiencies. As underlying sustainability are both economic and …

Affect As A Decision-Making System Of The Present, Hannah H. Chang, Michel Tuan Pham Jun 2013

Affect As A Decision-Making System Of The Present, Hannah H. Chang, Michel Tuan Pham

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We review a variety of empirical findings consistent with the general thesis that the affective system of judgment and decision making is inherently anchored in the present. Building on this thesis, we advance the specific hypothesis that affective feelings are relied upon more (weighted more heavily) in judgments whose outcomes and targets are closer to the present than in those whose outcomes and targets are temporally more distant. Consistent with this hypothesis, results from five experiments show that temporal proximity (a) amplifies the relative preference for options that are affectively superior, and (b) increases the effects of incidental affect on …

Firms' Intentions To Use Nonownership Services, Kristina Wittkowski, Sabine Moeller, Jochen Wirtz May 2013

Firms' Intentions To Use Nonownership Services, Kristina Wittkowski, Sabine Moeller, Jochen Wirtz

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this study, we investigate why companies intend to use nonownership services by conducting qualitative interviews with 10 experts to develop our hypotheses, then using a survey to test them. Our findings show that, as hypothesized, firms’ intentions to use nonownership services are affected by both financial (i.e., tax efficiency and cash and liquid asset management) and nonfinancial (i.e., control over assets and access to the latest technology and tools) factors, with access to the latest technology and tools being the most important driver. Furthermore, we show that the effect that the desire to gain access to the latest technology …

Implementation Of Slowly Changing Dimension To Data Warehouse To Manage Marketing Campaigns In Banks, Lihui Wang, Junyu Choy, Michelle L. F. Cheong May 2013

Implementation Of Slowly Changing Dimension To Data Warehouse To Manage Marketing Campaigns In Banks, Lihui Wang, Junyu Choy, Michelle L. F. Cheong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Management of updating and recording campaign leads in data warehouse of any banking environment is complex especially with multiple campaigns are active simultaneously. As a way to avoid overly contacting customers for sales-based marketing contacts, the concept of Recency Frame is introduced to “lock” the customers who are targeted in Sales-based campaign for a specified time period. During this Recency Frame, the customer cannot be targeted by other Sales-based campaign under the same channel. This approach increased the difficulties of managing the customers’ data with proper data updating and storing and procedures have to be placed and made sufficiently robust …

The Effect Of Crm Outsourcing On Shareholder Value: A Contingency Perspective, Kalaignanam Kartik, Tarun Kushwaha, Jan-Benedict E. M. Steenkamp, Kapil R. Tuli

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

CRM refers to processes that involve interaction with end-users or customers. The increased emphasis on CRM today stems from changes in the business environment, availability of large amounts of data and advances in information technology.Outsourcing of customer relationship management (CRM) processes is rapidly becoming a competitive imperative for firms. However, there is little evidence on why the performance implications of outsourcing CRM processes differ so much across firms. In this study, the authors examine the impact of CRM outsourcing on shareholder value. The authors draw on insights from agency theory and the resource-based view of the firm in an international …

Why The Dog Ate My Newspaper!, Singapore Management University

Perspectives@SMU

Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) rolls out its ‘Peel and Taste’ campaign. Multi-sensory marketing campaigns — which integrate at least one of the five senses into the marketing programme — are here to stay in the marketing industry, says Geoff Tan, SPH’s senior vice president and head of Strategic Marketing, of the trend which could see readers (or the family dog retrieving the paper) getting a taste of newly-launched food products in their favourite newspaper.

Adding Small Differences Can Increase Similarity And Choice, Jongmin Kim, Nathan Novemsky, Ravi Dhar Feb 2013

Adding Small Differences Can Increase Similarity And Choice, Jongmin Kim, Nathan Novemsky, Ravi Dhar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Similarity plays a critical role in many judgments and choices. Traditional models of similarity posit that increasing the number of differences between objects cannot increase judged similarity between them. In contrast to these previous models, the present research shows that introducing a small difference in an attribute that previously was identical across objects can increase perceived similarity between those objects. We propose an explanation based on the idea that small differences draw more attention than identical attributes do and that people’s perceptions of similarity involve averaging attributes that are salient. We provide evidence that introducing small differences between objects increases …

Divided We Stand: Defying Hegemony In Theory And Practice, Anne Gregory, Gregor Halff Dec 2012

Divided We Stand: Defying Hegemony In Theory And Practice, Anne Gregory, Gregor Halff

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The last decade has seen the world becoming increasingly complex. One way of dealing with complexity, according to Schwab (2010a), is to look for certainties or solutions that impose order by simplifying. The authors contend that this is also happening in public relations practice and the academy. They criticise attempts to produce global models which lead to hegemony and argue for maintaining a diversity that reflects reality. They take the cases of the UK and Singapore as respective exemplars where hegemony has succeeded and where it needs to be resisted. They call for a professional and epistemological stand against hegemony.

The Impact Of Macro Socio-Economic Drivers And Fiscal Policy On Expenditure Allocation And Attribute Preferences, Anirban Mukherjee, Andre Bonfrer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Our article investigates the effect of macro socio-economic drivers on Australian households’ allocation of expenditure in a category (household appliances) and conditional on the allocated category expenditure, preferences for products (clothes washers) within the category. At the category-level, we quantify the effect of changes in social mobility, disposable income, housing prices and the 2009 stimulus payments on purchase propensity and expenditure. At the product-level, we investigate how households trade off between price, energy efficiency and loading capacity conditional on allocated category expenditure, measuring nonhomotheticity in preferences. We use the model to study a number of hypothetical scenarios, where we simulate …

We show that although incentivizing product reviews results in more helpful content, disclosing payment lowers review consumers’ product quality expectations. This effect occurs because disclosure induces doubt in product quality and persists when more objective information is available, irrespective of disclosure specificity, across product categories and even after product trial.

Paying For Convenience: Attractiveness And Revenue Potential Of Time-Based Delivery Services, Philipp Goebel, Sabine Moeller, Richard Pibernik

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Purpose: Four characteristics have been regularly applied to services: intangibility, heterogeneity, inseparability, perishability (IHIP). More and more exceptions occur which have resulted in substantial criticism. This paper aims to show that each characteristic is valid and useful when related to an individual aspect of services instead of being assigned to services as a single entity. Design/methodology/approach: Based on customer integration, a framework (FTU framework) and a resource typology are developed. These approaches are the theoretical foundation of the analysis. Findings: The FTU framework and a resource typology reveal different aspects of services and allow the assignment of the IHIP characteristics …

Sustainability In Clothing Supply Chains: Implications For Marketing, Sudhindra Seshadri Jun 2012

Sustainability In Clothing Supply Chains: Implications For Marketing, Sudhindra Seshadri

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Recommendations for sustainability strategies for business have predominantly taken an individual firm level perspective. Yet, sustainability efforts are by essence collaborative and span firm level boundaries. Multiple stakeholders espousing often divergent goals need to work together over long periods on sustainability collaborations. Well recognized externalities in the firm’s economic existence need to be addressed by multiple stakeholder skill sets and are fraught with high risks and uncertainties. These are conditions ripe for syndication, as financial and corporate syndicates have demonstrated. The rules of syndication cover the structure of membership, setting of goals and objectives, governance, incentives and sharing of rewards and …

Outlet Patronage In On-The-Go Consumption: An Analysis Of Patronage Preference Drivers For Convenience Outlets Versus Traditional Retail Outlets, Raphael Heider, Sabine Benoit May 2012

Outlet Patronage In On-The-Go Consumption: An Analysis Of Patronage Preference Drivers For Convenience Outlets Versus Traditional Retail Outlets, Raphael Heider, Sabine Benoit

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study investigates patronage preferences of consumers who purchase and consume food and beverages while they are on-the-go (on-the-go consumption). The focus is on the drivers of patronage preferences for convenience outlets versus traditional retail outlets. A literature based model of patronage preferences is developed in this paper. It is tested based on data collected from a Dutch online sample (n=669) through binary logistic regression. The results reveal that significant relationships exist between patronage preferences in on-the-go consumption and the assortment offered as well as the opportunity to consume products without effort. Moreover, significant relationships between patronage preferences and consumers' …

On The Value Relevance Of Retailer Advertising Spending And Same-Store Sales Growth, Kapil R. Tuli, Anirban Mukherjee, Marnik Dekimpe Apr 2012

On The Value Relevance Of Retailer Advertising Spending And Same-Store Sales Growth, Kapil R. Tuli, Anirban Mukherjee, Marnik Dekimpe

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In response to recent calls to study factors that determine a retailer's stock price, this study draws on signaling theory to examine the impact of two key marketing metrics that are widely disclosed by retailers to investors, advertising spending and growth in same-store sales (COMPS), and highlights the moderating role of various firm- and sector-specific factors. Using a stock-response model estimated on a sample of 1,646 observations for 257 retailers, the authors find that the value relevance of advertising spending and COMPS depends on the financial condition of, and the competitive pressures faced by, the retailer. In addition, the positive …

Get Organised: The Importance Of Focus In Shopping, Knowledge@Smu

Consumer decision making can be conceptualised as a series of stages progressing from the recognition of a need to search for information about alternatives, the formation of a consideration set, a formal evaluation of the choices, and finally, making the purchase. But how much of this process might be affected by a consumer’s style of goal pursuit? According to Hannah Chang, an assistant professor of marketing at SMU, businesses will do well to pay attention to their target customers' decision environments.

Spillover Effects Of Ingredient Branded Strategies On Brand Choice: A Field Study, Swaminathan Vanitha, Srinivas K. Reddy, Sara Loughran Dommer Mar 2012

Spillover Effects Of Ingredient Branded Strategies On Brand Choice: A Field Study, Swaminathan Vanitha, Srinivas K. Reddy, Sara Loughran Dommer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Ingredient branding, or the use of two or more brand names on a single product, is widely seen as providing significant benefits in terms of increased product differentiation and greater market share. The association between two brand names can both enhance and dilute the brand equity of the host brand name and the ingredient brand name. This research examines the behavioral spillover effects associated with cobranded strategies across segments of consumers that vary in their prior brand commitment or loyalty. Different from previous research, this paper uses A.C. Nielsen scanner panel data to investigate the behavioral spillover effects of ingredient …

Correlational evidence indicates that materialistic individuals experience relatively low levels of well-being. Across four experiments, we found that situational cuing can also trigger materialistic mind-sets, with similarly negative personal and social consequences. Merely viewing desirable consumer goods resulted in increases in materialistic concerns and led to heightened negative affect and reduced social involvement (Experiment 1). Framing a computer task as a “Consumer Reaction Study” led to a stronger automatic bias toward values reflecting self-enhancement, compared with framing the same task as a “Citizen Reaction Study” (Experiment 2). Consumer cues also increased competitiveness (Experiment 3) and selfishness in a water-conservation dilemma …
