JOHNSON CITY (Jan. 14, 2020) – Fifty years ago, residents of an impoverished county in East Tennessee staged an outdoor drama. They had no experience in any aspect of show business, their county was in a remote mountainous area far from major highways, and many of their fellow citizens objected to the subject of the play. But the show went on anyway.

JOHNSON CITY (Jan. 9, 2020) – Four a cappella ensembles from East Tennessee State University will compete in the South Region quarterfinals of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) on Jan. 25.
ETSU’s Greyscale, Swashbucklers, Harmonium and Ascension will compete against five ensembles from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and one from the University of Memphis in the quarterfinal, which will be held on the UT campus in Knoxville.

JOHNSON CITY – (January 8, 2020) A scholarship program at East Tennessee State University that helps develop artists for the 21st century is being named in honor of longtime Tennessee higher education leader Dr. Bert C. Bach, who retired from ETSU this month following more than 25 years of service as the institution’s top academic official.
The Bert C. Bach Fine and Performing Arts Scholarship Program is offered through the ETSU Honors College. Students chosen for this highly competitive program receive a full academic tuition scholarship for four years.

JOHNSON CITY (Jan. 8, 2020) – Dr. Patricia Harnois-Church, assistant professor at East Tennessee State University’s College of Nursing, was recognized for her virtual poster highlighting her research on the role of interest groups in shaping U.S. governmental responses to military sexual trauma (MST).
Harnois-Church earned first place in the faculty division of the Rural Health Association of Tennessee’s Fourth Annual Virtual Poster Competition. Her virtual poster went on to win “First Place Overall,” earning the highest score of all 31 virtual poster submissions.

Continuing its focus on promoting a diverse and inclusive student culture, East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy received a grant of over $45,000 to support mentoring, engagement and retention efforts for pharmacy students whose first or best language is not English (E2 students).
The project, PEER-E2, stands for Promoting Engagement, Excellence, and Retention for E2 students and focuses on six main areas:

East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy awarded two students the prestigious Mitch and Barbara Cox Pharmacy Scholarship. In addition to a $10,000 monetary award, the scholarship provides each student mentoring opportunities with Mitch and Barbara.

The theme of the photoshoot in the November/December 2019 bi-monthly magazine was “Personal & Team Development” and featured students on the ETSU Basler Team Challenge and Aerial Adventure Course completing team-based activities. At the recent national Student National Pharmaceautical Association (SNPhA) conference, ETSU Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy's SNPhA chapter took home a national honor.
McKayla Barker ('22) was awarded "Chair of the Year " for her work with Remember the Ribbon, which is devoted to HIV/AIDS awareness. In addition, ETSU SNPhA was one of eight teams chosen to compete in a live clinical debate during the national conference.
In 2019 the chapter earned Overall Chapter of the Year, competing with 100 other chapters across the country at the organization’s annual convention in Houston. In addition, they earned nine other national honors.

JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University’s Department of Physical Therapy has expanded its educational and clinical reach in the region through the growth of residency and fellowship programs that offer advanced, specialized training for physical therapists who are interested in orthopaedics.
“Physical therapy education has evolved over the years,” said Dr. Michael Bourassa, assistant professor and residency and fellowship program director. “It started as a certificate program, then became a bachelor’s program, then a master’s and is now a doctorate. With that push, the next step was post-professional training, including residencies and fellowships.”

Emma Hill firmly believes that an experience is what you make of it, so when she arrived on ETSU for her freshman year, she was determined to make this journey a positive one.
Her post-high school journey had already taken a different course from the one she had initially planned. Her original plan was to enlist in the U.S. Air Force. Kate Trabalka, a junior from Oak Ridge, is an ETSU Fine and Performing Arts Scholar who is pursuing a degree in media and communication with a concentration in journalism and a minor in dance. JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University’s Office of Professional Development will offer its three-month Pharmacy Technician Certification Training Course starting Feb. 4.
The class, limited to 35 students, will train participants to assist pharmacists in handling medications and serving patients. Those who pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination become nationally certified, and the course now offers more sessions to accommodate new PTCB requirements.
The course instructor is Cheryl Ollry, a pharmacy technician at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Ollry has over 15 years of experience in retail and hospital pharmacy.

JOHNSON CITY – After several years of careful planning, the Climate Office for the state of Tennessee has been officially recognized at East Tennessee State University by the American Association of State Climatologists (AASC).
The Tennessee Climate Office (TCO) at ETSU has been fulfilling the basic responsibilities of a state climate office since its establishment in 2016, providing climate data services to state agencies, researchers and citizens and studying the impact of drought, extreme rainfall, severe storms and other hazards.
