JOHNSON CITY (June 9, 2020) – East Tennessee State University psychologist Dr. Andrea Clements is a recipient of the 2020 Harold Love Outstanding Community Involvement Award from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC).
Clements, a professor and assistant chair of curriculum in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Psychology, is praised for her work in the community and region in two areas: promoting trauma-informed practices in court, police, education and mental health systems, and collaboration with faith-based groups to address the problem of opioid use and addiction.

JOHNSON CITY (June 3, 2020) – East Tennessee State University’s Future Operations Workgroup, which was tasked with developing a plan for academics and services to return to campus, released its recommendations today for a phased return beginning this month.
The report includes a series of operational stages, 1-4, designed to address the need for loosening or restricting physical distancing measures in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. JOHNSON CITY (June 2, 2020) – East Tennessee State University has named Michael Meit, a nationally respected leader in rural health, as the director of research and programs at the ETSU Center for Rural Health Research.

JOHNSON CITY – Picture a groundhog-sized animal with horns on its nose like a rhinoceros, and you have a pretty good idea of the new species of extinct rodent described in a recent paper in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology. It is only the sixth species of “horned gopher” ever discovered, and it has allowed researchers to tackle some questions about why and how these little critters evolved horns.

Dr. Brenda Louw, Chair of the Department Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology at East Tennessee State University, is stepping down as chair after 11 years in that position on July 31, 2020 to focus on her research and enjoy her teaching in the Speech-Language Pathology master’s program and in various personnel preparation grants.
Louw joined ETSU from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where she was the Chair of the Department of Communication Pathology. She and her husband Jack, moved to Johnson City in 2009. They became U.S. citizens in 2016.

ETSU Health Internal Medicine held its 2020 graduation at the Veterans Administration campus Gazebo on Saturday, May 30. Due to the current COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, the event was recorded for friends and family to view.
Twenty-one residents completed their three-year program as required by the ACGME, which will allow these individuals to become Board Certified in Internal Medicine as a field of practice. Araminta Ray’s path to East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine took a 2,190.9-mile detour that required some of the same tools she has used as a medical student – resilience, perspective, and community.
Ray was accepted to Quillen in 2018.
“I don’t remember a time in my life when I didn’t want to become a doctor,” Ray said. “But I’ve also known I was going to hike the Appalachian Trail about as long as I’ve known I was going to be a doctor. It’s been a part of me and one of my lifelong goals for years.”

JOHNSON CITY (May 26, 2020) – With COVID-19 shutting down many in-person summer activities for high school and undergraduate students, East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy has launched a free interactive webinar series for students interested in pharmacy called “Gatton Rx Elements.”
The five-week series explores current career options in pharmacy, how to apply to pharmacy school, financial aid options, student life on campus, a virtual tour of Gatton College of Pharmacy and a chance to chat and have virtual coffee with the college’s dean, Dr. Debbie Byrd.
