JOHNSON CITY -- Four ETSU faculty and staff were honored at the 19th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Prayer Breakfast, held Jan. 18 at Memorial Park Community Center.
A native of Rogersville, Joy Fulkerson currently serves as Director of Leadership and Civic Engagement. She provides leadership for community service, civic learning, and democratic engagement efforts through a variety of programs and initiatives including Alternative Breaks, the Brenda White Wright Emerging Leaders Academy, the Diversity Educators Program, ETSU Votes, Volunteer ETSU, and the Public Service Corps Scholarship Program. JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 19, 2019) –As he finished putting gifts inside his shoebox that would soon jet around the world to a needy child, Kojo Abakah knew firsthand the potential impact.
He had received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox himself in Ghana, West Africa, which ultimately led him on a journey to pursue his dream of becoming a pharmacist at East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy.
In November, Abakah worked with others in ETSU’s Christian Pharmacist Fellowship International chapter to fill 66 shoeboxes as part of Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan's Purse, an international Christian …

JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 16, 2019) –During East Tennessee State University’s (ETSU) Fall Commencement, nine students pursuing their Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) at ETSU Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy completed their Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy Studies. The commencement and hooding ceremony was held on Saturday, Dec. 14, in ETSU’s Ballad Health Athletic Center (Mini Dome).
Gatton College of Pharmacy’s bachelor’s degree completion program is a way for students enrolled in the college’s Pharm.D. program without a bachelor's degree to complete it while also earning their Pharm.D.

The creation and execution of this project began by analyzing the honors project specifications, to design a project that met the Honors College criteria. To meet these criteria, a market research study was conducted to assist the College of Business’s Business Career Accelerator management in understanding the student market of the College of Business. In addition, the study’s goal is to make recommendations utilizing marketing and education frameworks to maintain and increase student usage of the center. The TAC awards IAF's to professional artists who have shown exceptional talent in their chosen disciplines. Vanessa Mayoraz, who relocated from Geneva to Johnson City, Tennessee, spoke with Seed Space's Rachel Bubis about coming to Appalachia with fresh eyes, experimenting with technology and vegetation, and working outside of a major cultural hub in a Question & Answer session for Burnaway.
Mayoraz's work includes site-specific installations to public participatory projects, themes of memory, fragility and the body to unite her work. She defines her practice, the diverse needs of artists, as well as her experience living and working in a small Tennessee city.

The ETSU Department of Art & Design and Slocumb Galleries in partnership with the Johnson City Public Library and AROHA Philanthropies present Artful Aging: Birds & Sculptures, curated by Angelique Lynch. The exhibition will be on display through September 15, with an artist's reception on September 14 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Congratulations to BFA Printmaking Alum and former department adjunct faculty member Laken Bridges on her new job as Director of Adult Education at William King Museum of Art. She received her MFA in printmaking from Clemson University and holds a BA in French and a BFA in studio art from ETSU. Though she is trained as a printmaker, Bridges engages in a cross-disciplinary studio practice involving print, drawing, sculpture, books, and writing.

Shelby Maiden, FPA honors scholar and BFA Graphic Design candidate, recently had her honors thesis published on ethesis.org. In her thesis Maiden states, "The visual and performing arts are inherently bonded to the art of literature; all additionally lend themselves to the narratives of women and their specific hardships. Examination of the relationship between each art form and its history is vital, but perhaps even more essential is the relationship that contemporary art shares with historical activist literature."

Congratulations to Art & Design students Meg Roussos and Bradley Marshall for their accomplishments at receiving residencies at the Fraenkel Gallery and Skowhegan for summer 2018. Both these achievements are prestigious accomplishments for the Department of Art & Design.
Meg Roussos, current MFA photography student, has been awarded an internship at the Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco for the summer. Roussos just received Outstanding Graduate Student for 2018.
