Emma Hill firmly believes that an experience is what you make of it, so when she arrived on ETSU for her freshman year, she was determined to make this journey a positive one.

Her post-high school journey had already taken a different course from the one she had initially planned.  Her original plan was to enlist in the U.S. Air Force.  She was all set, but at the last minute, a past shoulder injury she sustained as a cheerleader medically disqualified her.  Emma later inquired about enlisting with the Navy, but again she was not able to pass the medical …

Names, characters, costumes, notes and venues change, but reviewers find soprano Diba Alvi “spectacular,” “alluring” and “impressive” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) and in command of “the stage with stellar vocalism and a sharply dramatic personality” (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review).

Kate Trabalka, a junior from Oak Ridge, is an ETSU Fine and Performing Arts Scholar who is pursuing a degree in media and communication with a concentration in journalism and a minor in dance.  Last year, Trabalka auditioned for a popular reality television show for dancers, and while she did not make it, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that helped her to focus on where she wants to take her career, both as a dancer and as a journalist.  As a student at ETSU, Trabalka is a reporter for the East Tennessean, the university’s student newspaper, …

2020-January-01-Pharmacy Technician Certification Course Offered, University Marketing And Communication, East Tennessee State University

JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University’s Office of Professional Development will offer its three-month Pharmacy Technician Certification Training Course starting Feb. 4.

The class, limited to 35 students, will train participants to assist pharmacists in handling medications and serving patients. Those who pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) examination become nationally certified, and the course now offers more sessions to accommodate new PTCB requirements.

The course instructor is Cheryl Ollry, a pharmacy technician at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Ollry has over 15 years of experience in retail and hospital pharmacy.

JOHNSON CITY – After several years of careful planning, the Climate Office for the state of Tennessee has been officially recognized at East Tennessee State University by the American Association of State Climatologists (AASC).

The Tennessee Climate Office (TCO) at ETSU has been fulfilling the basic responsibilities of a state climate office since its establishment in 2016, providing climate data services to state agencies, researchers and citizens and studying the impact of drought, extreme rainfall, severe storms and other hazards. Earning Extra Credit Or Losing Extra Credit? A Classroom Experiment On Framing Incentives As Gains Or Losses, Vassilis Dalakas, Kristin Stewart

This exploratory study examines if the way incentives are framed (gains versus losses) impacts how students respond to them. Sixty-two students in two sections of the same undergraduate Marketing course were offered the incentive of an optional final exam by answering correctly quiz questions throughout the semester. One section received the incentive as a gain (opportunity to earn an optional final exam if you get enough quiz points) whereas the other section received it as a loss (final is optional, but you may lose it if you don’t get enough quiz points). Balancing the research, teaching, and service facets is important to achieving success in academia. Doctoral programs should prepare their students to successfully navigate and balance all three of these facets. We focus on the research facet in this study and draw from the experience of a panel of accomplished researchers within the discipline, to compile a set of guidelines for doctoral students and new faculty. Analyzing the qualitative results from the panel interviews, we find that to ensure success within the research facet, one must effectively manage three emergent focal distinctions; a relationship with: oneself, others, and with the work.

Sales education research recently has turned its attention to using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, but much remains in our understanding of its use in the online and virtual sales education environment. JOHNSON CITY – Dr. Ingrid Luffman, an assistant professor in the Department of Geosciences at East Tennessee State University, was recently honored with a 2019-2020 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department of Geography at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Luffman, who graduated from UTK in 2013 with a Ph.D. in geography with a concentration in spatial analysis and watershed dynamics, received the award in the Early Career category for individuals who graduated within the past 10 years.  Awards are also given in Mid-Career (10-25 years since graduation) and Lifetime (more than 25 years since graduation) categories.
