JOHNSON CITY (Jan. 27, 2020) – Greyscale, the premier a cappella ensemble in East Tennessee State University’s Department of Music, brought home first place honors in the South Region quarterfinals of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA), held Saturday, Jan. 25, on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
Greyscale, along with ETSU’s Swashbucklers, Harmonium and Ascension, competed against five ensembles from UT-Knoxville and one from the University of Memphis. JOHNSON CITY (Jan. 22, 2020) – Dr. William Stone, a professor at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine, is studying a new precision medicine approach to treating bladder cancer.
Stone, who is also director of pediatric research in Quillen’s Department of Pediatrics, received a Research Development Committee grant from ETSU to further his study of an enzyme called an esterase.
“A long time ago, some investigators found that patients with bladder cancer excrete an enzyme called an esterase and the levels of this enzyme could predict the occurrence of bladder cancer,” Stone said. “There are lots of esterases …

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Jan. 22, 2020) – The annual “Men in Song” and “Women in Song” music festivals will run simultaneously on Saturday, Feb. 1. Hosted by the music departments of East Tennessee State University and Milligan College, the one-day festivals unite and celebrate the region’s choral singers.

JOHNSON CITY (Jan. 17, 2020) – East Tennessee State University’s College of Nursing is among the top 100 best online master’s in nursing programs in the country, according to a new report released this week by U.S. News & World Report.

JOHNSON CITY (Jan. 17, 2020) – East Tennessee State University has announced a new program that provides last-dollar assistance covering tuition and program service fees as well as extensive support for incoming freshmen.
ETSU Promise Plus begins in fall 2020 and will be open to first-time, full-time freshmen eligible for the Tennessee Education Lottery (HOPE) Scholarship and the maximum Pell Grant. In addition to financial assistance, Promise Plus offers free support to help students be successful in their pursuit of a degree.

The article, Poverty and Health in Tennessee, examines the effects of poverty on health among the 95 counties of Tennessee.

Interactions between university and industry or society mainly occur in the form of transfer and/or collaborations. However, both forms have mostly been discussed as transfer thus, the underpinnings of both forms are not often discussed. As a result, the tensions (contradictions, dialectics and paradoxes) embedded in the interactions are also overlooked (not explored). Continuing its focus on promoting a diverse and inclusive student culture, East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy received a grant of over $45,000 to support mentoring, engagement and retention efforts for pharmacy students whose first or best language is not English (E2 students).

At the recent national Student National Pharmaceautical Association (SNPhA) conference, ETSU Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy's SNPhA chapter took home a national honor.
McKayla Barker ('22) was awarded "Chair of the Year " for her work with Remember the Ribbon, which is devoted to HIV/AIDS awareness. In addition, ETSU SNPhA was one of eight teams chosen to compete in a live clinical debate during the national conference.
In 2019 the chapter earned Overall Chapter of the Year, competing with 100 other chapters across the country at the organization’s annual convention in Houston. In addition, they earned nine other national honors.

JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University’s Department of Physical Therapy has expanded its educational and clinical reach in the region through the growth of residency and fellowship programs that offer advanced, specialized training for physical therapists who are interested in orthopaedics.
“Physical therapy education has evolved over the years,” said Dr. Michael Bourassa, assistant professor and residency and fellowship program director. “It started as a certificate program, then became a bachelor’s program, then a master’s and is now a doctorate. With that push, the next step was post-professional training, including residencies and fellowships.”
