Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software has been implemented by the majority of the large corporations in the world in order to streamline and integrate their internal business processes. The impact of this multi-million, sometimes billion dollar IT investment is mostly measured in terms of ROI, cost savmgs and productivity improvement. However, marketers should not ignore the benefits an ERP system can bring them and their customers. This paper describes five benefits marketers derive from an ERP implementation. These are information availability, streamlined processes, sales force support, strengthened business partners, and support for globalization.

Many studies have demonstrated the efficiency and effectiveness of using group support systems in large, face-to-face meetings known as legislative sessions. However, few have investigated how individual participants or sub-groups in different rooms linked via a computer network, forming a "virtual" group, may use the systems. An experiment using two sizes of virtual groups (8 and 16 participants) showed that participants were satisfied with the meeting process. Estimating resource requirements on any project is challenging and this is certainly the case for Information Systems (IS) projects. Group Support System Research In The 1990s: Leaders In Research Productivity, Zachary Wong

Research using Group Support Systems has increased gradually from their beginning in 1984, and the area is a significant part of the overall MIS literature. Because of its importance, a few studies have attempted to identify the leading researchers and institutions in the area as well as trends over the years. This study updates the analysis with a survey of 236 papers published during the 1990s from 43 academic journals. The results show that many of the researchers identified earlier are still leaders, but individual rankings have changed.

Forecasting the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the United States is one of many estimates to predict the economic health of the country. Current forecasting techniques use consensus estimates of experts, econometric models, or other statistical methods. Relatively little research has been devoted to how artificial neural networks may improve these forecasts, however. This paper describes how a neural network using leading economic indicator data predicted annual GDP percentage changes one year into thefiiture more accurately than competing techniques over a ten-year period.

We present a study of cross-cultural virtual teams supported by two computer-mediated communication technologies (electronic mail and the World-Wide Web). Our primary focus is to identify how cultural differences affect users' task and technology perceptions. Dyads made up of members from the United States and Mexico created a five-page strategic plan for the implementation of a joint MBA international business capstone course that establishes strong international bonds between the students of both institutions. This paper looks at the way in which Utopian dreams, such as the cashless society, influence the adoption of information technology. Some authors claim that Utopian visions are used by IT firms to market their services and products, and that the hype that often accompanies technological innovations is part of a "large scale social process" in contemporary societies. This article discusses the social role of technological utopianism with respect to the introduction of EFTPOS in New Zealand. The case of New Zealand is interesting, given that New Zealand has the highest saturation of EFTPOS terminals in the world.

When faced with an ambiguous ethical situation related to information technology (IT), the individual's course of action is influenced by personal experiences, consideration of what co-workers would do in the same situation, and an expectation of what the company would sanction. Logical abduction is a relatively unknown technique that may be used to classify or forecast. This paper describes abduction and applies it to a classification problem involving population change in the United States to test its accuracy. Results show that for this problem, it is as accurate as logistic regression, used in a prior study. Guidelines for using abduction are also presented.

The Effects Of Computer Self-Efficacy And Outcome Expectancy On End-User Job Control And Stress, John W. Henry, Robert W. Stone

This article examines the effects of computer self-efficacy and outcome expectancy on the end-user's sense of felt stress as mediated by job control. A nationwide survey of information technology end-users provided the sample. The results show that computer self-efficacy directly impacts personal and job related outcome expectancies and that computer self-efficacy and job related outcome expectancies directly affect job control. Job control is shown to mediate the impacts of computer self-efficacy and job related expectancies on stress. The results are discussed and implications for information technology managers are presented.

The New Zealand Health Information Service has recently established a national health register. At the heart of this development are three national databases. These applications and their functions are presented. Other initiatives currently being explored are also discussed. The paper contends that these initiatives under the guise of advancing the nation's health may instead be infringing the privacy of the nation's citizens. An analysis of New Zealand's privacy legislation to the development of such a centralized health system is detailed. The paper concludes by considering the possibility of hidden agendas despite the provisions of the nation's privacy rules.

Although program design and documentation tools have existed for over 30 years, virtually no tools other than the Task-Object-Event (TOE) chart have been created for teaching program design in the event-driven object-oriented language environment. This paper discusses the NEADT3 (Newman-Ekedahl Application Development tool) applied to the Visual Basic 6.0 language. NEADT 3 Significantly extends the commonly used TOE model in teaching programming by providing more concise and correct design and documentation of Rapid Application Development (RAD) student programs.

This study examines differences in individual ethical evaluations of computer-use scenarios between subjects in Hong Kong and the United States in an effort to better understand value differences that may be associated with differences in attitudes toward computer use expectations. Analysis indicates that although Hong Kong subjects generally take a more permissive view of ethical responsibility regarding computer use, they do not necessarily condone violations of ethical behavior. Results are discussed and implications for future research are addressed.

Parallel subsystems within operational systems can improve system reliability, especially in areas of the system which are or may become weak links. The basic modes of operation of parallel systems include backup, operation under exceptional conditions, and functioning on a compare-for-equal basis to facilitate output quality. A parallel system classification scheme is presented as well as a description of a database which ties parallel subsystems to their corresponding operational systems. The database can assist the manager in identifying and analyzing weak links anywhere in the organization to determine where parallel subsystems can best improve overall system reliability.

Software piracy is reported as an ongoing problem for software developers and vendors. Significant revenue is lost when illegal copies of software are utilized, estimated by some to exceed $8 billion per year. Of particular concern are estimates that the problem is increasing, especially in those countries that have lax or no laws to protect intellectual property. In order to incorporate up-to-date quantitative and qualitative information, Computer- Based Information Systems (CBIS) must be able to extract data from unstructured, textual formats such as newspapers and magazines. The process of updating information in a CBIS currently requires large amounts of human effort analyzing and converting data from such sources into formats which information systems can work with. This paper suggests some methods by which the data needs of a CBIS can be handled semi-automatically (Employing both computers and humans) using text-based intelligent systems (TBIS) techniques.
