Computer-Based Modules for Engineering Instruction Must Be Concise, Flexible, Educational and Engaging in Order to Effectively Supplement Traditional Classroom Teaching Tools. a Computer Example that Takes More Time Than a Chalkboard Presentation is Not Likely to Be Useful in Today's Engineering Classroom. Flexible Navigation is Necessary So that the Instructor Can Quickly and Easily Respond to Student Questions. Useful Modules Must Also Improve Problem-Solving Skills or Clarify Troublesome Concepts in Order to Be Considered Worthy of Inclusion in the Limited Class Time Available. Finally, and Perhaps Most Importantly, Effective Computer-Based Modules Must Meet the Challenge of Holding the Student's Attention. …

Knowledge Maps Are Node-Link Representations in Which Ideas Are Located in Nodes and Connected to Other Related Ideas through a Series of Labeled Links. the Research on Knowledge Mapping in the Last 12 Years Has Produced a Number of Consistent Findings. Students Recall More Central Ideas When They Learn from a Knowledge Map Than When They Learn from Text and Those with Low Verbal Ability or Low Prior Knowledge Often Benefit the Most. the Use of Knowledge Maps Also Appears to Amplify the Benefits Associated with Scripted Cooperation. Learning from Maps is Enhanced by Active Processing Strategies Such as Summarization …

Dynamics Of Elastic Sheets With Bending Stiffness, Michael Gene Hilgers
Dynamics Of Elastic Sheets With Bending Stiffness, Michael Gene Hilgers
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
A theory describing the motion of nonlinear elastic membranes with bending stiffness is formulated. The strain energy density for these materials depends on the second derivatives of the deformation as well as the first derivatives. A compatible kinetic energy density requires velocity gradient terms to agree to the same order as the strain energy density. The equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principle. Due to the velocity gradient dependence of the kinetic energy density, the equations of motion are found to possess a rotary inertia term which is considered from a variety of perspectives. The motion of a spinning …

While the technology required to produce viable Battery Energy Storage System exists, the economic feasibility (cost vs. benefits) of building these systems requires justification. First, a generalized decision diagram was developed to ensure that all of the economic factors were considered and properly related for the customer-side-of-the meter. Next, two economic models that had consistently given differing results were compared. One was the McKinney model developed at UM-Rolla in 1987; the second was the SYSPLAN model developed by Battelle. Differences were resolved on a point-by-point basis with reference to the current economic environment. The economic model was upgraded to include …

The Major Objective of the Present Experiment Was to Assess the Effects of Textual Errors on Dyadic and Individual Learning. One Hundred Undergraduates Were Taught a Four-Step Learning Strategy, after Which They Studied a Text Passage Either Dyadically or Individually. Half of the Passages within Both Conditions Contained Syntactic Errors. Total Recall Measures Indicated that Dyads Performed Better Than Individuals on Recall of Text in Sections Not Containing Errors, Whereas the Groups Did Not Differ on Recall of the Material in Text Sections Containing Errors. Further, Dyads Outscored Individuals on Measures of Recall of Error Location, Error Frequency, and Perceived …

The Effects of Cooperative Learning Strategy Manipulations on the Enactment and Recall of a Medical Procedure Were Explored. One Hundred and Twenty-Three College Students Completed the Experiment. during Training, Participants Were Randomly Assigned to a Dyad in One of Four Conditions: (A) No-Strategy, (B) Baseline Strategy, (C) Prompting Strategy, and (D) Planning Strategy. during Testing, Participants Both Performed and Produced Written Recalls of the Procedure Instructions. Test Order Was Counterbalanced within Dyad. Training and Test Performances Were Videotaped. the Planning Group Produced the Best Recalls and Recalled More Conditions of the Procedure. the Prompting Group Performed Best. Recall of the …

During the past several years, there has been much discussion and controversy over what should be taught in high school mathematics, in general, and in high school geometry, in particular. Numerous mathematicians have encouraged the teaching of transformations as part of the standard high school mathematics curriculum[1-4,6-9]. The results of a recent survey of high school teachers of mathematics indicate that 19% have taught geometric transformations, 26% feel adequately prepared to teach such a topic, and 50% would like to teach the topic if materials were available for the average college prep student[5].
