During the 70s, computer communication technology was transformed by desktop computing and distributed capacity. Networks
based on the TCP/IP protocol (transmission control protocol and Internet protocol) started communicating with one another.
Internet control message protocol, a mechanism to transfer control messages between nodes, was developed to manage ARPANET (the US government's advanced research project networks). ARPANET started in 1969 and developed into the Internet in 1984 with the advent of UNIX and client/ server architecture.
