Are Participants Good Evaluators?, Jeffrey A. Smith, Alexander Whalley, Nathaniel T. Wilcox Oct 2021

Are Participants Good Evaluators?, Jeffrey A. Smith, Alexander Whalley, Nathaniel T. Wilcox

Upjohn Press

Managers of workforce training programs are often unable to afford costly, full-fledged experimental or nonexperimental evaluations to determine their programs’ impacts. Therefore, many rely on the survey responses of program participants to gauge program impacts.

Smith, Whalley, and Wilcox present the first attempt to assess such measures despite their already widespread use in program evaluations. They develop a multidisciplinary framework for addressing the issue and apply it to three case studies: the National Job Training Partnership Act Study, the U.S. National Supported Work Demonstration, and the Connecticut Jobs First Program.

Each of these studies were subjected to experimental evaluations that …

BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi

The studies of Flexible Working Arrangement (FWA) have increased significantly in 2020. However, most studies are focused on the benefits and risks of FWA in general or particular jobs. The model of FWA implementation in different characteristics of jobs to improve performances are still insufficiently researched. Using a case study with qualitative and quasi-statistic data, this study investigates the Indonesian public sector in implementing FWA policy. Investigating Indonesia allows the researchers to describe how FWA in a mandated leading training institute promotes performances in different types of jobs. This study finds that each department endured unique circumstances. The Research Department …

Is Classifying Uber Drivers As Independent Contractors Really A Bad Thing?, Kyleigh A. Dinnien

Student Publications

Uber is a part of the gig economy providing individuals with the opportunity to earn cash by completing rides through the Uber platform. These drivers are classified as independent contractors, but there is a discussion on whether they should instead be determined as employees. Employees receive different types of benefits than do independent contractors which is often thought of as a good thing, but this independent contractor classification may be what is saving millions of people from being unemployed. There are reasons why Uber would like to continue classifying drivers as independent contractors and there are consequences to both categories …

The Meaning Of Leadership For Leaders Of Private Universities In Indonesia, Immanuel Yosua, Juliana Murniati, Hana Panggabean

BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi

Leading a university is generally more complex than a business organization, as the situation requires the presence of a leader who not only meets the criteria but is also willing to lead, a very rarely found combination in universities. Interestingly, although it is not easy to find academics with such qualities, these people still exist because they see the importance of leading for the survival of the organization. Therefore, it becomes interesting to understand how they ascribe meaning to their leadership amid the difficulties they must deal with. This study was conducted using in-depth interviews with 13 academic leaders to …

As with all training, leadership training can vary in many ways. Below are some of the more common aspects that have been empirically evaluated:

Data Segmentation (Video), Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development

Workforce Analytics Resources

Data segmentation is the process of breaking down “big” data into smaller, more meaningful groups, called segments. In the case of workforce data, each segment represents a group of people with similar characteristics, either that pertain to them as an individual (e.g., gender, race, educational background) or to their connection to the organization (e.g., their job title, supervisor, or work schedule).

There are a variety of ways to “slice and dice” your data into meaningful groups. Some possibilities are listed below. The squares represent the unit of categorization (e.g., agency structure), and dashed green squares represent the data segments (e.g., …
