DLSU Business & Economics Review

By utilizing Heckman’s two-stage selection model, this paper attempts to establish correlates between an individual’s physical attractiveness and the employer’s hiring decisions and wage allocations in an experimental labor market. Undergraduate students from De La Salle University Manila represented the sample for applicants. The findings show that, first, beauty premium is lower for men—more physically attractive male candidates have lower chances of getting hired, and subsequently acquire lower wages than more physically attractive women. Second, beauty premium does not differ between the sales and finance occupations. Third, the relationship between beauty and hiring probability comes from the employer’s personal bias, …

Mutual Fund Fees Under An Oligopolistic Distribution Channel: Evidence From Korea, Kang Baek, Young S. Park Jul 2020

Mutual Fund Fees Under An Oligopolistic Distribution Channel: Evidence From Korea, Kang Baek, Young S. Park

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study analyzes whether, under oligopolistic distribution channels, mutual fund fees are primarily determined by a distribution company’s transaction-specific variables. The results empirically demonstrate that the intensity of market competition influences determinants. Through analyses at the firm level, this study demonstrates that the characteristics of an oligopolistic structure, and particularly the financial segments and scales of fund distributors, are important determinants of mutual fund fees during a collusive period. It finds that subsequent to the enforcement of pro-competitive policies, fees become more sensitive to market discipline and distributors’ transactional characteristics, particularly to sales concentration.

Effect Of Advertising Expenditure On Firm Performance Of Filipino Corporations: A Two-Stage Least Squares Analysis, Safa D. Manala-O, Ringgold P. Atienza

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Advertising is commonly thought to lead to improved firm performance, but literature has been divided on the effect of advertising on revenue and profitability so far. Some studies confirm a link between these three variables, but others do not. Studies that negate a relationship between advertising expenditure and firm performance are of interest, particularly because advertising can be very expensive for a company. Thus, this study sought to examine the relationship between advertising expenditure, revenue, and net profit of 57 corporations listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) for 10 years, from 2008 to 2017. Using 2SLS regression analysis on …

This study used the constructed CBMS panel data for the municipality of Orion in Bataan province covering the period 2006, 2009, and 2012 to identify chronic and transient poor households based on the duration of poverty. The Philippine Ukay-Ukay Culture As Sustainable Fashion, Hazel T. Biana Jul 2020

The Philippine Ukay-Ukay Culture As Sustainable Fashion, Hazel T. Biana

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Wang et al. (2019) proposed a sustainable fashion index model that aims to measure the sustainability of fashion companies. The model is interesting because of its underlying theory, which provides necessary dimensions and variables that make the fashion industry and its activities sustainable. This paper aims to employ these dimensions and variables as theoretical concepts to evaluate the sustainability of Philippine ukay-ukay culture. Ukay-ukay is a term used both for the act of shopping by digging up piles of used or pre-loved clothes until one makes a good find. It also refers to retailers of secondhand clothes and accessories in …

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

The current global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions trajectory indicates that the world is likely to experience catastrophic consequences due to climate change, unless swift action is taken towards funding green solutions and the defunding of fossil fuel activities (IPCC 2018). While there is an extensive academic literature on the links between environmental and fiscal policies and the low-carbon energy transition (Aghion et al. 2016; Ambec et al. 2013; Cojoianu et al. 2020), as well as on optimal environmental policies in times of economic downturns (van den Bijgaart and Smulders 2018), we know less about what the role of central banks …

Is There A Relationship Between The Gender Of The Ceo And Short-Termism Or Long-Termism?, Kerry Calnan

Doctoral Dissertations (DBA)

Based on a panel of S&P 1500 firms from the period of 2008-2016, we evaluate whether firms managed by female CEOs exhibit the same short-termism or long-termism as firms managed by male CEOs. We evaluate in terms of market based, firm based and investment indicator. Our goal is to better understand if there is a relationship between the gender of the CEO and short-termism or long-termism.

Our results find firms with female CEOs have lower Tobin’s Q, lower ROA, however, they spend more on research and development than firms run by male CEOs.

Security Analysts And Capital Market Anomalies, Li Guo, Frank Weikai Li, K.C. John Wei

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examine whether analysts use information in well-known stock return anomalies when making recommendations. We find results contrary to the common view that analysts are sophisticated information intermediaries who help improve market efficiency. Specifically, when analysts make more favorable recommendations to stocks classified as overvalued, these stocks tend to have particularly large negative abnormal returns ex post. Moreover, analysts whose recommendations are more aligned with anomaly signals are more skilled and elicit greater recommendation announcement returns. Our results suggest that analysts' biased recommendations could be a source of market frictions that impede the efficient correction of mispricing.

Chapter 1: Analyst report content and stock market anomalies A series of recent papers document that security analyst recommendations tend to contradict stock-mispricing signals. This seems at odds with the large prior literature on the investment value of analyst recommendations. What justifications do analysts make when they write reports on mispriced stocks? I use the latest techniques in machine learning and textual analysis to categorize the qualitative information in a large sample of analyst reports. I find that report content can be intuitively classified into five categories or topics: 1) Growth, 2) Earnings, 3) New developments, 4) Management transactions, and …
