Contemporary Investment Strategies And Comparison Applications Of Bitcoin, William Gregg Vi, Thanh Nguyen Aug 2020

Contemporary Investment Strategies And Comparison Applications Of Bitcoin, William Gregg Vi, Thanh Nguyen

University of South Carolina Upstate Student Research Journal

Bitcoin is an effective component to any investor's portfolio. The purpose of this research paper was to study the capabilities Bitcoin has to investors and anyone interested in learning more about cryptocurrencies. What are the strategic applications of Bitcoin and why should it be used over other types of assets? Bitcoin offers diversification capabilities to commodities, equities, bonds, the U.S. dollar, and most stock market indices. It can offer hedging capabilities against the U.S. dollar, Ethereum, stock market indices, and commodity uncertainty. The Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 (FTSE100) is an example of an index that Bitcoin can hedge against. …

Mutual Funds: Governance And Holdings, Jason Morrison Aug 2020

Mutual Funds: Governance And Holdings, Jason Morrison

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive

In this dissertation I examine the role of governance and holdings within the mutual funds industry to determine if active managed fund strategies are affecting fund flows and increasing returns. My first two essays focus on dividend juicing and the results of this strategy and the types of boards of directors that would allow this strategy to be implemented. My third essay focuses on the concentration of holdings and the effect on the overall fund performance. I use hand collected data on the governance characteristics of the board of directors as well as the economic data and holdings of the …

The Effect Of Investor Sentiment On Earnings Management, Lin Chen Aug 2020

The Effect Of Investor Sentiment On Earnings Management, Lin Chen

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive

The association between investor sentiment and corporate reporting decisions/outcomes has been recently examined in the accounting and finance literature. As an important outcome of corporate reporting decisions, earnings management (EM) may be affected by investor sentiment. In this dissertation, I examine two research questions. The first is whether investor sentiment is associated with the propensity of firms’ engaging in the two primary forms of EM: accrual earnings management (AEM) and real earnings management (REM). The second question is whether firms’ internal governance strength and external audit quality would moderate the association between investor sentiment and AEM as well as REM. …

Crisis Regulations: The Unexpected Consequences Of Floating Nav For Money Market Funds, Kyle D. Allen, Drew B. Winters Aug 2020

Crisis Regulations: The Unexpected Consequences Of Floating Nav For Money Market Funds, Kyle D. Allen, Drew B. Winters

Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations

From the inception of money market funds (MMFs), all MMFs reported a fixed $1 NAV (Net Asset Value). In July 2014, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued new regulations for MMFs that require Prime institutional MMFs to report floating NAVs. The SEC did not expect a significant impact on the MMF industry from requiring floating NAVs for Prime institutional funds. We find that over 70% of the assets under management in Prime MMFs left Prime funds with over half the Prime funds closing. We find that more than half of the Prime retail MMFs (which are not required to …

Capturing Hedge Fund Risk Factor Exposures: Hedge Fund Return Replication With Etfs, Jun Duanmu, Yongjia Li, Alexey Malakhov Aug 2020

Capturing Hedge Fund Risk Factor Exposures: Hedge Fund Return Replication With Etfs, Jun Duanmu, Yongjia Li, Alexey Malakhov

Finance Faculty Publications and Presentations

We develop a new factor selection methodology of spanning the space of hedge fund risk factors with all available exchange traded funds (ETFs). We demonstrate the efficacy of the methodology with out-of-sample individual hedge fund return replication by ETF clone portfolios. This is consistent with our interpretation of ETF returns as proxies to risk factors driving hedge fund returns. We further consider portfolios of “cloneable” and “noncloneable” hedge funds, defined as top and bottom in-sample R2 matches, and demonstrate that our ETF clone portfolios slightly outperform cloneable hedge funds out of sample.

The Relative Industry Specific Effects Of Covid-19 On Market Volatility And Liquidity, Callin Christensen Aug 2020

The Relative Industry Specific Effects Of Covid-19 On Market Volatility And Liquidity, Callin Christensen

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Understanding how historical events affect market volatility and liquidity can provide crucial information to financial analysts, investment professionals, and managers in the event that similar circumstances resurface. In this study, I look at how a global pandemic (COVID-19) can introduce frictions into the market and cause disrupt the generation or flow of available information, this could cause prices to deviate significantly from their equilibrium values. I also hypothesize that these inefficiencies may have a greater effect on some industries than others. My analysis seems to confirm this hypothesis. I observe that the global COVID-19 pandemic leads to statistically significant increases …

Reinforcement Learning For Dynamic Futures Hedging, Evan Bullard Aug 2020

Reinforcement Learning For Dynamic Futures Hedging, Evan Bullard

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This paper focuses on oil hedging using near month crude oil futures. Hedging may allow a firm to reduce risks and focus on areas of comparative advantage. Hedging requires a firm to estimate ex-ante the correct hedge ratio. The portfolio optimization framework allows for OLS to be applied to the estimation of a hedge ratio. Reinforcement Learning is another method available to hedgers to estimate a hedge ratio. Three strategies using econometric tools and one using Reinforcement Learning are estimated and tested against 2019 oil price data.

Black-Scholes And Neural Networks, Gabriel Adams Aug 2020

Black-Scholes And Neural Networks, Gabriel Adams

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Neural networks have been proven to be universal approximators. We use neural networks to investigate the relationship between the quality of input data and the quality of outputted predictions from a neural network. We show that neural networks perform better on option pricing data with quality data and perform worse with lower quality data.

Industry Stock Prices Around Covid-19, Daniel Cardall Aug 2020

Industry Stock Prices Around Covid-19, Daniel Cardall

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In this study, I examine how market participants respond to global uncertainty around the Covid-19 pandemic. More specifically, I analyze the industries most affected by the outbreak. The pandemic has created events never before seen at such a global level. Governments closed their country’s borders and quarantined their residents. Business owners closed their doors. These unforeseen events put the world economy at a standstill. I find that these decisions caused the U.S. stock markets to crash by more than 30%. The industries that experienced the most negative value-weighted abnormal returns were Carry, Meals, and Books. The industries that exhibited the …

The Effects Of Mifid Ii On Sell-Side Analysts, Buy-Side Analysts, And Firms, Bingxu Fang, Ole-Kristian Hope, Zhongwei Huang, Rucsandra Moldovan Aug 2020

The Effects Of Mifid Ii On Sell-Side Analysts, Buy-Side Analysts, And Firms, Bingxu Fang, Ole-Kristian Hope, Zhongwei Huang, Rucsandra Moldovan

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This paper provides early but broad empirical evidence on MiFID II, which requires investment firms to unbundle investment research from other costs they charge to clients. Employing difference-in-differences matched-sample research designs with firm fixed effects, we find a decrease in the number of sell-side analysts covering European firms after MiFID II implementation, particularly for firms that are less important to the sell-side. However, research quality improves; specifically, individual analyst forecasts are more accurate and stock recommendations garner greater market reactions. In addition, sell-side analysts seem to cater more to the buy-side after MiFID II by providing industry recommendations along with …

Financial Technology And Inclusion In Asean, David Fernandez, Marc Rakotomalala Aug 2020

Financial Technology And Inclusion In Asean, David Fernandez, Marc Rakotomalala

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Financial technology (FinTech) has the potential to be a positive, game-changing force for boosting financial inclusion in ASEAN, as mobile money and greater access to basic financial services have the capacity to improve the economic well-being of households. Indeed, technology has been shown to drive broader increases in economic growth, which itself interacts positively with financial inclusion. In a more direct way, new, specific fintech developments globally and in ASEAN itself can be beneficial for financial inclusion. In this paper, we look at financial inclusion and technology, and how cooperative efforts between ASEAN policymakers, the private sector, and their broader …

What Drives The Declining Wealth Effect Of Subsequent Share Repurchase Announcements?, David K. Ding, Hardjo Koerniadi, Chandrasekhar Krishnamurti Aug 2020

What Drives The Declining Wealth Effect Of Subsequent Share Repurchase Announcements?, David K. Ding, Hardjo Koerniadi, Chandrasekhar Krishnamurti

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Recent academic studies document that open market share repurchase announcements in the United States generate significantly lower returns than those reported in earlier studies. We find that the lower announcement return is associated with an increasing number of subsequent announcements in the more recent periods. Although the announcement period return from the initial announcement is positive, subsequent announcement returns are significantly decreasing. Further, we find that the decreasing returns of subsequent announcements are attributed to firms with negative past repurchase announcement returns. Our multivariate regression test results are consistent with the notion that the decreasing subsequent repurchase announcement returns are …

The Effects Of Ceo Dismissal Risk And Skills On Risky Corporate Decisions And Ceo Compensation, Son T. Dang Aug 2020

The Effects Of Ceo Dismissal Risk And Skills On Risky Corporate Decisions And Ceo Compensation, Son T. Dang

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

This dissertation consists of three distinct essays on the effects of CEO dismissal risk on M&A megadeal decisions, the association between CEO compensation and generalist managerial ability in the presence of CEO dismissal risk, and the alignment of the initial compensation of new CEOs following CEO dismissals with their managerial ability.

In Essay 1, I study the link between CEO dismissal risk and risky M&A decisions and find that higher-dismissal-risk CEOs engage in more M&A megadeals than their counterparts. Such megadeal transactions lead to lower acquirer post-M&A abnormal returns, suggesting that risky investment decisions are driven by CEOs’ career concerns. …

The Impact Of Competition From Venture Capitalists On Corporate Venturing Investment, Marco Bade Jul 2020

The Impact Of Competition From Venture Capitalists On Corporate Venturing Investment, Marco Bade

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This study proposes a model on corporate venturing (CV) investment and examines the impact of venture capital (VC) activity in the economy on CV firms’ investment. The presence of VCs creates competition for entrepreneurs. This reduces CV firms’ expected venturing returns, and thus gives rise to a financial disincentive to CV investment. The empirical prediction of this result is that competition for talent should decrease CV investment. This prediction contradicts previous statements in the theoretical literature on CV.

The Federal Reserve’S Financial Crisis Response E: The Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility, Rosalind Z. Wiggins, Andrew Metrick Jul 2020

The Federal Reserve’S Financial Crisis Response E: The Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility, Rosalind Z. Wiggins, Andrew Metrick

Journal of Financial Crises

Securitization is a process that allows banks and other lenders to package loans and sell them as bonds called asset-backed securities (ABS), removing them from their balance sheets and immediately generating cash for new loans. ABS are an important component of the financing cycle for many types of loans to households and small businesses, including mortgages. In the fall of 2008, financial markets began experiencing disturbances as the effects of the U.S. subprime market meltdown spread. The ABS market froze decreasing the volume of new loans to households and small businesses. The Federal Reserve became very concerned about the potential …

House Banks In Out-Of-Court Reorganization: Evidence From Austria, Stefan Mayr, Christine Duller, Kerstin Stumbauer Jul 2020

House Banks In Out-Of-Court Reorganization: Evidence From Austria, Stefan Mayr, Christine Duller, Kerstin Stumbauer

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

The main purpose of this article is to study the role of house banks in out-of-court reorganization. Banks are traditionally one of the most important financial resources for firms. Especially in financially difficult times like those we now face due to the coronavirus, it can make a difference whether a bank supports its clients and accompanies firms through a crisis or not. With the help of relationship lending theory, we review the existing literature on this topic. Next, based on empirical findings from Austrian banks, we derive implications for corporate practice. The empirical study covers a sample of 658 firm …

International Portfolio Prospects And Concerns, Dimitrios V. Siskos Jul 2020

International Portfolio Prospects And Concerns, Dimitrios V. Siskos

Publications

The recent financial crisis amplifies the need for an updated and more universal investment strategy for both individuals and corporate investors. Diversification satisfies that condition, as it provides access to different economies operating in different countries while, simultaneously, it spreads the risk across different asset allocation[1]. However, to benefit the advantages of a diversified portfolio, a sophisticated decision making process and appeal to re-planning are required. Otherwise, international investors have to face the consequences of political-country risk and currency risk. The goal of this research is to correlate the benefits of diversification with risk undertaking for either individual …

Centre for AI & Data Governance (2019-2025)

The COVID-19 outbreak has a growing impact on the global economy and the financial sector, which plays a critical role in mitigating the unprecedented macroeconomic and financial shock caused by the pandemic. Given the unprecedented nature of the current crisis, financial regulators and supervisors, central banks, along with governments and legislatures face challenges to maintain financial stability, preserve the well-functioning core markets, and ensure the flow of credit to the real economy. Even though the COVID-19 has slowed down our daily lives and stopped the operation of many industries, it did not have the same effect in the data-driven finance …

Fraud And Error Misstatements And Auditor Liability: The Moderating Role Of The Evaluator’S Auditing Knowledge, Thanyawee Pratoomsuwan, Orapan Yolrabil

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Although a restatement is usually assumed to result from fraudulent behavior, Plumlee and Yohn (2010) studied whether a restatement might be attributed to both errors in the corporation’s internal controls and intentional misrepresentation. Moreover, prior research supports the notion that investors, regulators, boards, and other stockholders differentiate between fraud and error (Hennes et al., 2008). This study provides a preliminary understanding of how undetected fraud and error misstatements affect auditor liability, given the same outcome severity. A 2x2 between-subject experiment was conducted using undergraduate accounting students to represent evaluators who have high levels of auditing knowledge and nonaccounting students to …

An Analysis Of Factors That Affect Audit Opinions: The Case Of The Local Government Units In The Metro Luzon Urban Beltway, Florenz C. Tugas, Maria Corazon P. Gomez, Roselle Marie A. Sacorum, Rica Angela M. Lipana, Geneva Leecea M. Barawid Jul 2020

Barawid

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The audit is performed to give assurance to the public that financial statements are fairly presented. Accurate issuances of audit opinions show how compliant firms are to auditing standards. Receiving an unfavorable audit opinion will signal firms to improve internal control. Given this, it is important for the top management to assess the factors that can lead to misrepresentation of financial statements and result in adverse opinions. The same principle can be applied to government units and offices. With this in mind, the study was performed to investigate the influences of qualitative and quantitative factors on audit opinions received by …

Effect Of Financial Inclusion And Stability On Equality, Poverty, And Human Development: An Empirical Analysis In The Context Of South Asia, Souvik Banerjee Jul 2020

Effect Of Financial Inclusion And Stability On Equality, Poverty, And Human Development: An Empirical Analysis In The Context Of South Asia, Souvik Banerjee

DLSU Business & Economics Review

In this research endeavor, financial inclusion and its impact on three important aspects of human life (i.e., inequality, poverty, and human development) are explored in the south Asian region. Worldwide inequality is catching much attention from the academic community off late. Similarly, the extent of poverty and human development indicators of any country indicates the level of development. The penetration of the bank branch and automated teller machine (ATM) is considered as a proxy for financial inclusion. Long time-series data from 2004 to 2016 is considered for this study. This should be an important addition to the existing literature on …

Do Food Assistance And Welfare Of Rice Farmers Affect Food Security?, -- Suriani, -- Sartiyah Jul 2020

Do Food Assistance And Welfare Of Rice Farmers Affect Food Security?, -- Suriani, -- Sartiyah

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Poverty is always accompanying unmet food needs; hence it can disrupt food security. Efforts to improve food security can be made with government policy through food assistance, namely, rice for the poor and also increasing the amount of rice production from rice farmers to meet the adequacy of rice in an area. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of food assistance (Rastra) and farmers’ welfare on food security in terms of rice availability in Aceh-Indonesia in the short and long term. The model used is auto regression distributed lag (ARDL), and the determinant variables that are …

Auditor Information Spillovers And Company Operating Performance: Evidence From Targeted Auditor Switches, Tyler Kleppe Jul 2020

Auditor Information Spillovers And Company Operating Performance: Evidence From Targeted Auditor Switches, Tyler Kleppe

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this study, I examine whether companies realize operational benefits from making “targeted auditor switches” (i.e., engaging a new auditor recently dismissed by a competitor company). While prior work provides evidence consistent with companies perceiving that auditor information spillovers are costly, there is sparse extant evidence as to whether auditors actually do transfer operational information across companies. I find that companies that switch to a competitor’s former auditor realize significant subsequent improvements in operating performance, and I provide evidence that the association between targeted auditor switches and improvements in operating performance varies predictably with several across- and within-market factors. In …

Essays On Investments And Real Estate Finance, Shahedur Rahaman Chowdhury

Theses and Dissertations

Essay I examines the role of macroeconomic fundamentals in explaining the explosive behavior or price exuberance in the US local housing markets. Using monthly observations between November 1997 and December 2016 we employ the double recursive approach from Philips et al., (2015) to identify the emergence of price exuberance in each of the 291 U.S. Metropolitan Statistical Areas in the sample. Our estimations results show that population and income per capita have a significant positive effect on price exuberance, while unemployment rate and fixed mortgage interest rate have a negative effect. The marginal impacts of these macro fundamentals on housing …

An Analysis Of The Effects Of Foreign Ownership On The Level Of Tax Avoidance Across Philippine Publicly Listed Firms, Ailyn A. Shi, Francis R. Concepcion, Cheri Mae R. Laguinday, Trisha Amber T. Ong Hian Huy, Angelo A. Unite Jul 2020

Unite

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Tax avoidance schemes used by firms to lessen their tax burden have long attracted widespread concern in the Philippines, where poor tax collection due to tax leakages has contributed to chronic fiscal deficits in the country. In this regard, corporate governance mechanisms, such as the firm’s ownership structure, play a significant role in ensuring that management acts ethically and in the best interest of the firm’s owners. In this study, we examine the effect of foreign ownership on corporate tax avoidance for non-financial firms listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) from 2009 to 2015. Using three different measures of …
