Measuring Transformational Leadership, Employee Engagement, And Employee Productivity: Retail Stores, Shamika Schumane Desilva

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Retail stores are less profitable because of poor productivity from disengaged employees. Retail store leaders must prioritize employee productivity, as low productivity can negatively impact business performance with financial consequences. Grounded in transformational leadership theory and the theory of work engagement, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine the relationship between transformational leadership, employee engagement, and employee productivity in retail stores. Survey responses were collected from 119 nonmanagerial employees in the retail sector in the eastern United States. The results of the multiple linear regression analysis indicated the model was statistically significant, F(7, 112) = 35.149, p < .01, R2 = .69. The only two significant individual predictors were individual consideration (t = 4.10, p < .01) and vigor (t = 5.36, p < .01). A key recommendation is for retail store leaders to enact strategies promoting vigor- employees who work with high energy and effort levels, and to employ a transformational leadership style, particularly showing employees individualized consideration. Creating such a positive working environment for employees will improve their productivity. Implications for positive social change include the potential for retail managers to increase competitiveness for retail stores. The success of retail businesses, driven by improved worker productivity, may ensure financial stability for workers, families, and communities.

Experiencing Race In The Workplace: Understanding How African American Male Leaders Make Sense Of Their Race At Work, Stefanie L. Watson

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Weber (2001) defines race as “the grouping of people with certain ancestry and biological traits into categories for differential treatment” (p. 74). Yet, according to the American Anthropological Association (1998) and countless doctors, scientists, geneticists, and scholars, in theory, the term “race” does not scientifically correspond to biological and physiological distinctions and has no empirical basis. Despite the lack of biological basis, racial categories are powerful frameworks for defining self-concepts and structuring opportunities within American society. Within the framework of a racially stratified, White dominated society, individuals who self-identify as White (or are perceived by Whites to be White) receive …

Student Works (2020-2029)

This study focuses on state-state-business ties, a new phenomenon shaped by how local power elites (LPEs) collaborate with Chinese transnational corporate elites (TCEs) to implement infrastructure projects related to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). These LPE-TCE links, in turn, have led to the creation of novel forms of state-business relations (SBRs), with diverse outcomes and implications. In Malaysia, these state-state-business ties, forged by both countries for their respective business enterprises, were primarily a consequence of an interesting confluence of two major events, which took place between 2014 and 2016: 1) Malaysia’s 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal; and 2) the …
