Expatriates' Acculturation Strategies: Going Beyond "How Adjusted Are You?" To "How Do You Adjust?", Matthew Lineberry
Expatriates' Acculturation Strategies: Going Beyond "How Adjusted Are You?" To "How Do You Adjust?", Matthew Lineberry
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Expatriates' degree of adjustment to living and working in a foreign country is well-accepted as an important outcome variable in expatriate management research. However, measures of degree of adjustment do not capture the breadth of strategies expatriates may use to achieve such adjustment, which may be critical for understanding whether expatriates have achieved a healthy and productive orientation to life abroad. Borrowing from research on immigrant populations, this study examines the construct of expatriate acculturation strategies, which characterize expatriates' mode of adjustment along two independent dimensions reflecting maintenance of one's home culture and engagement of the host culture, respectively. One …

- BLM informed UNLV that the type of operating plan that was identified in June, 2011 as the appropriate instrument for future operations, and which was to have been completed by May 2012, prior to beginning construction, would not work for BLM. BLM informed UNLV that they are now considering a concession contract as the appropriate BLM document for the future operating partner.
- BLM and UNLV visited the ranch for a day to examine the continuing deterioration of the ranch house from water, and to discuss how to address this on-going problem. The group reviewed damage owing to water coming into …

We are all still basking in the glow of a wonderful 25th Anniversary Gala attended by more than 250 dear friends and supporters of IMSA. It has been truly inspiring to hear alumni, alumni parents and staff proudly reflect on our first 25 years as well as share extraordinary excitement in anticipation of our next 25.
For the past two and a half decades, IMSA faculty and staff have excelled at “igniting and nurturing” creative, ethical, scientific minds through inquiry based activities, demanding rigor and close relationships. In turn the students have continuously helped us learn how to teach – …

What Determines Public Pension Investment Risk-Taking Policy, Nancy Mohan, Ting Zhang
What Determines Public Pension Investment Risk-Taking Policy, Nancy Mohan, Ting Zhang
Economics and Finance Faculty Publications
State public pension plans, mostly defined benefit plans, cover pension benefits for 12.8 million active public employees and 5.9 million retirees and other annuitants. However, by the end of 2009, public pension plans had accumulated a total funding deficit of $697 billion (measured by the difference between actuarial pension assets and liabilities). On average, public pension funds cover 75 percent of their liabilities, but individual state results vary greatly.
The 2008 stock market crash strongly affected pension asset value in that equity allocation on average accounted for 56 percent of invested assets. The average 2009 pension asset beta of 0.63 …

Healthcare quality and costs are a growing problem in the United States. Healthcare organizations are facing increasing costs combined with declining quality (Schoenbaum). This unsustainable trend is putting a great burden on the health care system as a whole. The improvement of quality within the healthcare system would increase the value of the care (Schoenbaum).Improving healthcare quality, and thereby lowering the costs, is critical for the sustainability of healthcare organizations.
There are many different ways that organizations can use quality to reduce costs and increase the quality of service to their patients. There are also various ways an organization can …

Institutes of higher education exist for the purpose of developing, fostering, nurturing, and stimulating the intellectual growth and development of students. The core values of a college education provide students conceptual and practical educational opportunities that focus on improving their skills and knowledge. These skills and knowledge translate into purposeful, real-life learning experiences. However, in the academic community, learning is not restricted to students. Faculty, too, must be supported and provided opportunities for personal and professional growth and development. Although professional development is not a novel concept in the education profession, schools often take up the gauntlet, but fall short …

Financial Stability And Casino Debt, David G. Schwartz, Eugene M. Christiansen
Financial Stability And Casino Debt, David G. Schwartz, Eugene M. Christiansen
Library Faculty Research
Casino operators have always borrowed money to construct and improve their resorts. Beginning in 1999, however, the Las Vegas-based companies that dominate gambling in Nevada and many other jurisdictions began taking on unprecedented levels of debt. This debt load escalated from 2005 to 2009, and, though it has since leveled off, it has left casino operators more highly leveraged than ever before. Companies with such high levels of debt have consequently high interest payments, which leads to less money available for capital investment; it also makes them susceptible to default, should revenues weaken (as casino revenues did from 2008 onward). …

An Examination Of The Influence Of Top Executives On Entrepreneurial Orientation, James Ruben Boling
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
This collection of essays examines the influence that top executives have on the level of entrepreneurial orientation (EO) within an organization. EO is defined as the degree to which a firm exhibits behaviors and managerial philosophies that are innovative, proactive and risk-taking. EO is an extensively studied construct, yet there is still much to be explored and understood about its effects and predictors. This study adds to the discussion by examining predictors of EO in the two essays.
Essay 1 examines the influence of top management team characteristics on entrepreneurial orientation and the moderating effect of managerial discretion. It adds …
Extended Stakeholder Orientation: Influence On Innovation Orientation And Firm Performance, Vijay K. Patel
Extended Stakeholder Orientation: Influence On Innovation Orientation And Firm Performance, Vijay K. Patel
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
In search of drivers of sustainable competitive advantage, this study integrates aspects of stakeholder theory and market orientation. The work results in the concept of extended stakeholder orientation incorporating proactive elements for the first time. Market orientation focuses on customers and competitors – two key stakeholders. Stakeholder theory seeks to broaden the focus to a wider group of stakeholders including employees and shareholders who together with customers and competitors are seen as ‘essential’ stakeholders. Relationships, interactions and ongoing mutual impact on firm activities involving essential stakeholders are fundamental and frequent. While other views of stakeholder theory place more emphasis on …
Job Embeddedness: Do The Interaction Effects Of Attitude, Personality, And Exchange Relationships Detract From Performance?, Juanne V. Greene
Job Embeddedness: Do The Interaction Effects Of Attitude, Personality, And Exchange Relationships Detract From Performance?, Juanne V. Greene
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
Job embeddedness (JE) research has considered the web of connections that attach an individual to their work organization. Empirical evidence suggests that high JE is related to reduced turnover and improved individual task performance. Scholars have also suggested the potential for negative implications of JE when the web of connections serves to trap the individual in the organization. This study explores the boundary conditions that may add light to this potential dark side of JE by considering how variance in individual attitude, personality, and exchange relationships may moderate the relationship between JE and both performance and counterproductive behavior. Moderated hierarchical …
