Consulting Demons : Inside The Unscrupulotls World Of Global Corporate Consulting By Lewis Pinault, New York, Harper Business, 2000, Price : $26; Rs 940., Rishikesha T Krishnan

IIMB Management Review

This irreverent and perhaps slightly exaggerated account of the world of global consulting has behind it some sharp insights into a highly sought-after industry. Having worked in a range of consulting firms - from the strategy- and idea-driven Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to the more conservative and thorough Coopers & Lybrand (now Price Waterhouse Coopers) -Lewis Pinault has a range of experiences to offer and he does so in an engaging and easy-to-read manner. The book reads like a thriller, but every chapter ends with a section titled ' consulting demonology in which the author distil the learnings from his …

Variations In Organization Science : In Honor Of Donald T Campbell Edited By Joel A C Baum And Bill Mckelvey, Sage, 1999, Pp 452, Price: $ 39. 95., Abhoy K Ojha

IIMB Management Review

Organisation science, as a field of study, is relatively young. Although the study of human behaviour has a long history, and studies examining human behaviour in organisations were prevalent in the early twentieth century, the field as we know it today has emerged after World War II, particularly during the 1960s. As a result, like any other discipline in its early stages of evolution, organisation science has many competing paradigms jostling for dominance. Organisational ecology (also known as population ecology) is one of the few paradigms that have had a significant influence on the knowledge of organisations.

Organisational Orchestra : Structures And Processes Interface, Neelesh Hundekari Mar 2001

Organisational Orchestra : Structures And Processes Interface, Neelesh Hundekari

IIMB Management Review

Organisational structures do not exist in isolation. They presume, depend on, and influence several organisational variables. These include processes (communication, goal setting, conflict resolution, socialisation, leadership building, strategic planning, supporting, team working), behaviour, values, rituals, climate, authority (with which the role holders are imbued) and people (competence, confidence, interpersonal skills, leadership, perceptions about
others). Structure designers tend to ignore this vital reciprocal relationship quite often, leading to ineffective structures and unhappy human beings. An attempt has been made in this article to map the relationship between
organisational structures and processes.

Predicting Software Development Cost For Command And Control Systems, Anthony W. Fife Mar 2001

Predicting Software Development Cost For Command And Control Systems, Anthony W. Fife

Theses and Dissertations

In the past, the Department of Defense (DoD) has relied upon commercial software estimating tools. However, these tools are somewhat unreliable when it comes to estimating military systems, particularly Command and Control Systems. The purpose of this study was to develop a parametric model using linear regression to estimate software development costs for DoD Command and Control systems. The developed model is unique in a few ways. First, the model is derived from Department of Defense command and control data. Second, while traditional models require volumes of variables to create estimates, the developed model only requires a few key variables …

Research Summary 6: Analytical Procedures And Audit Planning Decisions, Steven M. Glover, James Jiambalvo, Jane Kennedy Feb 2001

Research Summary 6: Analytical Procedures And Audit Planning Decisions, Steven M. Glover, James Jiambalvo, Jane Kennedy

Faculty Publications

Auditors perform analytical procedures in planning the nature, timing and extent of testing. Significant fluctuations between the current year’s unaudited data and expected results signal an increased risk of material error and help auditors focus their planned tests on high-risk areas. This study examined auditors’ decisions to revise preliminary audit plans after analytical procedures performed during planning revealed significant, unexpected fluctuations. Specifically we examined whether the extent of corroboration for management’s explanation for the fluctuation and the presence of an explicit incentive for management to misstate the financial statements influenced auditors’ decisions to revise their audit plans.

Developing An Environmental Management System A Practical Guidebook For Agricultural Businesses, Lucy Taylor Feb 2001

Developing An Environmental Management System A Practical Guidebook For Agricultural Businesses, Lucy Taylor

Natural resources published reports

An environmental management system is a tool that many businesses use to improve their environmental performance. Having an environmental management system enables a business to identify and improve management of their significant environmental impacts.

Environmental management systems work to minimise environmental impacts by following a standard 'plan-do-check-improve' management framework. This framework focuses on identifying significant environmental impacts, setting performance targets, establishing means of achieving targets and maintaining sufficient records to show that targets have been reached. Environmental management systems can assist agricultural businesses in:

* improving resource management

* building public confidence in the environmental management of agriculture

* increasing …

A Note On The Paper “Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling: Notation, Classification, Models And Methods” By Brucker Et Al., Willy Herroelen, Erik Demeulemeester, Bert De Reyck Feb 2001

A Note On The Paper “Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling: Notation, Classification, Models And Methods” By Brucker Et Al., Willy Herroelen, Erik Demeulemeester, Bert De Reyck

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The great variety of project scheduling problems studied in the ever growing literature motivated the recent development of classification schemes. In a recent paper (European Journal of Operational Research 112 (1999) 3–41), Brucker et al. make the claim that, so far, no classification scheme exists which is compatible with what is commonly accepted in machine scheduling and introduce a new classification. In this note, we critically review major shortcomings of the suggested scheme which place heavy limitations on its potential use.

Using mail surveys, this is one of the first studies on this subject to collect data from top executives in both Japan and the USA. This paper explores the linkage between strategic grouping and performance of the Indian banking sector. Strategic grouping and performance were identified using published financial information for all public sector banks. Grouping of Indian public sector banks following comparable financial strategy – with similar asset quality, operational efficiency and profitability was operationalized using the graphical display method of Co-plot.

From their position in the two dimensional conceptual map, banks with identical financial performance formed strategic groups with significant positive linkage between better groups and their superior financial performance, which showed their inherent homogeneity in business policy decisions. Relative performance of the …

The Strategic Response Of Dublin's Traditional Department Stores To Intensifying Competition, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox

Articles

In Dublin city competition within the retail sector is intensifying and city-centre department stores, in common with other traders, face many challenges. Indigenous retailers must contend not only with each other, but also with an on-going invasion of international retailers who have been attracted by Ireland’s booming economy. UK multiples have made major in-roads into Dublin's retail scene and the city centre's latest shopping mall, The Jervis Centre, is so dominated by UK retailers that it has been christened 'Little Britain' In the past fifty years, many of Dublin's once dominant department stores have succumbed to the vagaries of retailing. …
