Chapter 13 : Organizational Stakeholder Management Develops Intentional Education Ethos, Abeni El-Amin Ph.D., Quinton L. Marks
Management Faculty Publications
Ethical leadership with regards to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging and stakeholder management impacts institutional and departmental culture. Formalized leadership ethics and compliance initiatives improve institutional structures. The importance of graduate leadership that embraces ethics and compliance programs ensures adherence to policies set forth by institutions and mitigates bias. Stakeholder management is key because adherence allows leadership to develop strategic plans with stakeholders in mind, while decreasing quality issues. As a result, there is value to executing stakeholder management plans within graduate education.

Effective higher education leadership is a movement in internationalized higher education. Moreover, incorporating principles of internationalized higher education is a contrast from traditional graduate educational practices, because new assessment methodologies are utilized to demonstrate institutional aptitude. Additionally, there has been a critical move in cutting-edge economies on how to attract students, grants, and funders. Globally, access to internationalized higher education has grown exponentially. Innovation is changing the idea of how people define internationalized higher education. Centralized leadership, information sharing, cooperation, and advancement are more prevalent than prior. Internationalized higher education has superseded traditional educational notions. Achievement lies in the capacity …

Chapter 8 : Evaluating Intentional Education Practice In Graduate Programs, Abeni El-Amin Ph.D.
Management Faculty Publications
The purpose of this chapter was to examine whether the six variables of graduate educational quality predict intentional education practice (IEP) (teaching style) in United States graduate university programs. The issue is that graduate student engagement, student satisfaction, and matriculation diminish without IEP. Consequently, current performance measures of graduate higher educational programs illuminate issues in processes within instruction, quantity of trained instructor mentors, professional support networks, and existing programming, which may need improvement. Indeed, past researchers have noted limitations in higher educational and graduate school environments. Performance measurement variables impact long-term institutional effectiveness and remain largely unknown within educational institutions. …

The problem related to teaching effectiveness includes failure of institutions to identify process improvements, ascertain appropriate stakeholders to accomplish institutional goals, and implement streamlined classroom processes to ensure instructors have the appropriate professional support needed to apply intentional educational practices in graduate programs. Consequently, current performance measures of educational programs illuminate issues in processes within instruction, quantity of trained instructor mentors, professional support networks, and existing programming which may need improvement, yet is not being addressed in educational environments. Performance measurement factors impact long-term institutional effectiveness service quality of HE (educator quality, educational services, activities, technology, continuous improvement, educational leadership, …

Educational leaders must institutionalize, implement, execute, and review initiatives to ensure graduate programs exceed performance metrics of educator quality, educational services, activities, technology, continuous improvement, and intentional education practice. Likewise, leaders must recognize that stakeholder engagement is invaluable to alleviate challenges in developing, assessing, and improving graduate program performance.
Chapter 6 - Empowerment Programming: Case Study Of How Intentionality And Consideration Create Breakthrough Elevating Graduate Programs, Brendon Fox
Management Faculty Publications
Administrators in the upper echelons of higher education face an array of dilemmas that impact and inform institutional priorities around how to serve various student populations best. Chief among those considerations is how to empower historically disenfranchised students toward a deeply substantive experience that inspires them intellectually and involves them in areas of social justice. This chapter provides an explanatory case study of a successful program launched by two vice presidents of a small, Predominately White Institution (PWI) in rural Kansas. It shows how deeply impactful outcomes for black male students can be achieved through intentional Elevating Educational Intentional Practice …

Educational leadership requires more than designing a plan of action and persuading others to adopt the vision. Educational leadership is about encouraging others to be a part of the solutions that persist in innovative ways. Utilizing feedback communication with stakeholders (students, parents, teachers, administrators, community, policy makers) improves initiatives and legal compliance implementation, which is a value- added to organizational excellence. Principled leadership fosters transparency in daily interactions. Educational leadership requires that one consistently communicates the vision to those above and below. Educational leadership must be diligent in both stating visions clearly and following up with written documentation. Evaluation allows …

A large body of literature explores the role of context, structure, actors, and outcomes of open innovation (OI), yet pays little attention to the mechanisms underlying these relationships. In this review paper, we synthesize the OI literature using a context-mechanism-outcome approach to identify and classify the various mechanisms observed in empirical OI studies. Our findings demonstrate that the OI literature draws on a wide variety of mechanisms originating from the fields of management, sociology, economics, and psychology. The fifteen mechanisms most frequently observed in the literature fall into four categories: governance and policies; environmental dynamics and interactions; knowledge, skills, and …

This research claims that dynamic strategies demanded by today’s digital environment exacerbate inconsistency between an organization’s digital transformation efforts and its enterprise architecture (EA) planning process. This phenomenon leads to redundant investments, delayed implementation, and frequent failures in digital transformation projects. In order to investigate this inconsistency, we apply the socioeconomic approach to management (SEAM) theory. Through critical analysis of four case studies in a large manufacturing organization, we clarify the relationship between digital transformation and EA and reveal the dysfunction in strategic implementation from a SEAM and business process management (BPM) perspective. In practice, this research integrates digital transformation …

While much is known about the prevalence and impact of incivility in the workplace, relatively less is known about those who instigate workplace incivility. This research aims to investigate incivility instigation through a moral lens by examining the roles of other-condemning moral emotions (contempt, disgust, and anger) and appraisals of coworkers’ morality as predictors of this behavior at work. In Study 1, we used structural equation modeling to analyze two waves of self-report data collected from a sample of 447 full-time United States (U.S.) working adults. Findings from this study indicate that appraising coworkers as low in morality elicited feelings …

The Dynamics Of Entrepreneurial Networking Logics: Evidence From United Kingdom High-Tech Start-Ups, Joanne Jin Zhang, Charles Baden-Fuller, Jing Zhang
Management Faculty Publications
Purpose – This study aims to explore how entrepreneurial firms’ networking logics may change under different types of perceived uncertainty. The arrival of new knowledge from the entrepreneurial firm’s network may alter the perceived technology and market uncertainty that in turn determines how the firm adopts or combines the two opposing logics of causation and effectuation. Focusing on the roles of external advisors recruited by the firms, the study probes the details of the cyclical process and the mechanism through which networking logics are altered.
Design/methodology/approach – In this study the authors conducted a 3-year longitudinal multiple case study of …

Relative to the large body of work in the broader strategic HRM (SHRM) literature, knowledge about determinants of SMEs’ approaches to HRM remains limited. We argue that heterogeneity in the use of high performance work practices (HPWPs) is influenced by top managers’ exposure and attention to information obtained via environmental scanning. Invoking an attention-based view (ABV), we develop hypotheses suggesting that competition tracking, participation in trade associations, and social network embeddedness will be associated with greater use of HPWPs. We also propose direct and moderating roles for top managers’ perceptions of competitive intensity. We test our hypotheses using a database …

Can You Escape? Using Mobile App Escape Games To Create A Holistic Experiential Learning Process Online, Mai P. Trinh
Management Faculty Publications
Mobile app escape games are excellent tools to create an experiential learning process in online contexts. Through the act of solving puzzles to escape the rooms, students experience a process in which they need to discover new information and clues, adjust their strategies repeatedly, and become more aware of the way they learn. Their emotional and behavioral reactions when they encounter difficulties can shed light on their learning identity and learning flexibility. The experiential learning cycle is complete with the addition of after-game reflection, debrief, and discussion. Escape games are versatile and can be used to teach a variety of …

Entrepreneurial Imaginativeness: A Janusian-Cognition Lens On The Role Of Multicultural Experience, Robert J. Pidduck, Daniel R. Clark, Yejun Zhang
Management Faculty Publications
A burgeoning stream of research is emerging on the importance of entrepreneurial imaginativeness in the new venture development process. Empirical studies so far have focused predominantly on its ideation-based outcomes—the number and quality of ideas produced. Knowledge remains scant, however, on its antecedent mechanisms and mediating role in nascent venturing. Drawing from a novel Janusian-thinking lens, we integrate another growing research stream in entrepreneurship—multicultural experience—to probe how the creative, social, and practical cognitive schemas underpinning entrepreneurial imaginativeness can be cultivated through dimensions of perhaps the most distinctive form of cultural exposure: living abroad. We find evidence across two studies that …

Interdisciplinary research is a promising approach with which to generate innovative solutions to real-world problems and create social value, yet it is a risky choice for early career academics (ECAs). This essay outlines the risks and rewards associated with interdisciplinary scholarship within the context of business schools. We use structuration theory as a guiding framework to identify how institutional structures can constrain the agency and interdisciplinary aspirations of ECAs and others who do not fit within the current narrow definitions of disciplinary excellence. Sharing examples from the authors’ journeys as ECAs from different disciplinary backgrounds who study leadership and management …

Does Restricted Stock Turn Ceos Into Risk-Averse Managers? Insights From The Regulatory Focus Theory, Rong Ma, Wanrong Hou, Richard L. Priem, Peter Wright
Management Faculty Publications
Restricted stock awards carry upside and downside risks for CEOs. We follow a socio-cognitive perspective by suggesting that awards of restricted stock are viewed as potential gains or potential losses depending on each CEO's dominant regulatory focus. Regulatory focus, therefore, helps determine how a CEO responds to restricted stock awards. We also propose that the moderating effect of regulatory focus strengthens as firm complexity increases and as CEO tenure lengthens, because complexity and tenure both increase CEOs' reliance on heuristic information processing. Specifically, complexity restricts a CEO's cognitive capacity for thoughtful deliberation during decision making, and tenure affects …

The Machiavellian Organization: A Multilevel Model To Understand Decision Making In Organizations, Michael J. Matthews, Thomas K. Kelemen, Samuel H. Matthews, Jacob M. Matthews
Management Faculty Publications
We introduce a three-phase model of decision-making as examined through a Machiavellian lens. Distinct from previous research, we broaden our research premise from Machiavellianism exhibited by an individual to Machiavellianism at the organizational level. We examine this type of organization beginning with an emphasis on organizational values and practices, which we define as climate emergence. After establishing the process of climate emergence, we examine employee sensemaking within a Machiavellian climate by drawing on Rest's decision-making model. Our research culminates with an exploration of resultant employee behaviors while emphasizing the moderating role of dispositional Machiavellianism. We conclude with a discussion centered …

The proliferation of digital data has opened the door for a 21st-century social science that explores human relationships on an unprecedented scale. A particular area of interest is that of leader social media (SM) usage. As studies on leader SM usage have grown dramatically in the past several years, we take stock of the extant literature across various research disciplines. Within this manuscript, we contextualize leader SM usage and demonstrate how it compares to analogous concepts. We subsequently abridge relevant findings and reflect on methodological and theoretical components of the research studies identified in this review. Further, we outline the …
Psychological Resilience Of Entrepreneurs: A Review And Agenda For Future Research, Robert J. Pidduck
Psychological Resilience Of Entrepreneurs: A Review And Agenda For Future Research, Robert J. Pidduck
Management Faculty Publications
Given that entrepreneurs face substantial adversity in initiating and developing new ventures, a burgeoning stream of research has sought to understand the concept of entrepreneurs’ psychological resilience. To structure and synthesize what we know about entrepreneurs’ psychological resilience, we systematically review the empirical literature to provide insights on how it has been conceptualized and operationalized, along with its key antecedents and outcomes. Based on our review, we advance a promising agenda for future research, grounded in connecting the psychological resilience of entrepreneurs to other research areas connected to the new venture development process. Overall, we point to the urgent need …

Questionable research practices (QRPs) among researchers have been a source of concern in many fields of study. QRPs are often used to enhance the probability of achieving statistical significance which affects the likelihood of a paper being published. Using a sample of researchers from ten top research-productive management programs, we compared hypotheses tested in dissertations to those tested in journal articles derived from those dissertations to draw inferences concerning the extent of engagement in QRPs. Results indicated that QRPs related to changes in sample size and covariates were associated with unsupported dissertation hypotheses becoming supported in journal articles. Researchers also …

Background: Medical school academic achievements do not necessarily predict house staff job performance. This study explores a selection mechanism that improves house staff-program fit that enhances the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Milestones performance ratings.
Objective: Traditionally, house staff were selected primarily on medical school academic performance. To improve residency performance outcomes, the Program designed a theory-driven selection tool to assess house staff candidates on their personal values and goals fit with Program values and goals. It was hypothesized cohort performance ratings will improve because of the intervention.
Methods: Prospective quasi-experimental cohort design with data from two house staff …

Platform organizations bring renewed attention to power disparities and risks in the rise of surveillance capitalism. However; such critical accounts provide a partial understanding of the complexity of surveillance phenomena in such shifting socio-technical and digital environments. The findings from a netnographic investigation of a healthcare platform organization, PatientsLikeMe, unravel how platforms become the locus where multi-level flows of surveillance converge, thereby constituting what we identify as a surveillant assemblage. We develop a comprehensive approach for understanding how platforms constitute a dynamic crossroads of micro-, meso- and macro-surveillance phenomena within and beyond the online communities they create. This study highlights this surveillant …

Practical Wisdom As An Adaptive Algorithm For Leadership: Integrating Eastern And Western Perspectives To Navigate Complexity And Uncertainty, Mai P. Trinh, Elizabeth A. Castillo
Management Faculty Publications
In this paper, we integrate Eastern and Western perspectives of practical wisdom to answer the question, how can practical wisdom transfer across cultural boundaries in a world of increasing interconnection? We describe key properties of practical wisdom in early Western and Eastern schools of thoughts and explain how the concept of practical wisdom in ancient philosophy aligns with modern-day complex system science. We identify seven qualities of complex adaptive systems as a universal pattern that underlies both Eastern and Western perspectives. From these qualities, we develop an integrated conceptual framework of practical wisdom as factors both internal and external to …

Experiential learning has been documented as an effective method for student learning, yet its use in large-enrollment classes remains limited. Kolb’s experiential learning theory emphasizes that experiential learning requires a hospitable learning space (HLS) that is conducive to learning. In this article, we reframe the challenges to experiential learning in large classes as a failure to create and maintain an HLS, and we propose Appreciative inquiry as one solution to this problem. Appreciative inquiry is an organizational development methodology that practitioners have successfully used to engage large groups to leverage their strengths and resources. First, we describe the HLS as …

Previous research on the association between job characteristics and employee well-being has returned mixed results. In particular, the possible impact of individual appraisal of these job characteristics has not been well-acknowledged. To address this limitation, we drew on appraisal theory and examined: (a) how workers appraise particular job characteristics, and (b) how these appraisals affect the relationships between these job characteristics and well-being (i.e., work engagement and burnout). We tested our hypotheses across two studies. In a cross-occupation sample (Study 1, n = 514), we found that job demands and resources can be appraised as both challenges and hindrances. In …

Spill and pollution (SP) accidents cause significant damage to the natural environment. They also result in financial costs and reputational losses for the offending firm. As such, understanding how firms respond to such crises is of significant interest to firm stakeholders, such as investors, customers, regulators, NGOs, employees, and local communities. In this study, we examine whether publicly disclosed SP accidents cause firms to alter their approach to environmental management, as expressed by the adoption of environmental management practices (EMPs). Using a unique panel data from 2002 to 2013, representing over 400 publicly-traded US manufacturing firms, we find that in …

By integrating the complementary needs theory of mate selection and the notion of complementary assets into the research of family business, we propose that three components of spousal capital complement each other. We elaborate on how homogamy and heterogamy in terms of various socioeconomic and psychological factors can affect family business performance through its impact on marital conflict—an individual-level lens. The empirical analysis on the questionnaires conducted to CEOs of small and medium-sized family firms in the U.S. shows that occupational homogamy and religion homogamy have a positive effect on family-business firm performance, while psychological heterogamy has a positive effect …
