A Holographic Model Of Management : The Service Imperative For Academics And Practitioners, V S Mahesh

IIMB Management Review

Business graduates, especially from premier institutes of management, have long been wooed by all sectors of industry and business alike. By and large, they have the reputation of being the star performers of their organisations. Have business graduates lived up to their promise? How far has their education equipped them to face the challenges of the actual business environment? How have they coped with and geared up to the post globalisation and liberalisation scenario? How confident are they of managing organisations creatively, of dealing with tasks as wide ranging as interfacing sensitively with customers and putting processes in place? Bringing …

IIMB Management Review

With the general elections to the federal parliament now complete, a government in place at the centre and the political fall out of the country's nuclear tests under reasonable control, it is time perhaps to get on with the unfinished agenda of action for the future. Foremost among the pressing priorities before the country is the need to upgrade and reorient education at all levels, primary, secondary, university and professional, to provide the leading edge to the nation as it enters the next millennium. Round Table this time takes a critical look at the state of management education in India …

Business Transformation: Relevance And Risks, Colin Coulson-Thomas Oct 1997

Business Transformation: Relevance And Risks, Colin Coulson-Thomas

IIMB Management Review

Much of contemporary management thought and corporate practice rests upon the assumption that change and flexibility are desirable in themselves. However, activity does not always lead to progress. There might well be movement but this could be away from a known position of strength to more insecure ground. Before jumping on to the 'change for the sake of change' band wagon, companies are advised to consider aspects such as the desirability and nature of changes sought, ways of implementing changes effectively and ameliorating their negative effect. A more holistic, people - centred and thinking approach to change is advocated.

Human Resource Management And Quality Orientation In Banks, Aruna Mankidy Oct 1997

Human Resource Management And Quality Orientation In Banks, Aruna Mankidy

IIMB Management Review

In an era where Quality is the focus in a redefined perspective, service organisations have to orient themselves to quality management - not just for success but for survival. The experience of organisations implementing TQM has highlighted the cruciality of HR policies and practices. A project initiated by the National Institute of Bank Management explored the possibility of implementing Quality management approach in the HR department of a commercial bank. The pivotal point was to bring the "Internal Customer" orientation to the service department which could then be extended to the entire organisation. The framework developed and analysis carried out …

IIMB Management Review

The festive season is on; compliments and good wishes from all of us here at the Review. It is a pleasure to reach this issue of the journal to you. I am conscious of the dateline impact that consistently leaves one with the impression of delay, even though the issues themselves are coming out at approximately three month intervals. To catch up with this, we have had, once again, to combine the June and September quarters. This should, hopefully, help the combined issue, when released in October, not being seen as dated. Our endeavour, however, remains to bring out quarterly …

Evaluating Business Cases Some Guidelines, N Balasubramanian

IIMB Management Review

As the case method of instruction in teaching and training in business and management education finds increasing acceptance, the focus is now on how to enhance the quality of business cases that are written, and also on how to upgrade the quality of teaching through the case method. More and more users of cases, and the authors themselves, would want to evaluate cases before deciding to use them.

Are Indian Companies Ready For Just-In-Time?, B Mahadevan

IIMB Management Review

The time is ripe to understand what the Indian industry has done to assimilate the Just-in-Time (JIT) philosophy. Practitioners belonging to different sectors of industry would like to know what areas to concentrate on for successful JIT implementation. The study addresses these issues and seeks to bridge the gap between the 'doers' and 'thinkers' of JIT implementation.

IIMB Management Review

It is almost a decade now since the economic liberalisation process was ushered in. As businesses and organisations learn to cope with and prosper in the fiercely competitive business environment, Round Table takes time off to consider what the next score of years holds for Indian business houses. What will it take for these houses to stand up and be counted among their compatriots in the comity of nations? A select group of business leaders, economists, academics and practitioners debate certain key issues that Indian business houses will have to address in the years ahead. K R S Murthy points …

Reclaiming Higher Ground: Creating Organisations That Inspire The Soul By Lance H K Secretan, Sage Publications, 1996., Nina Jacob

IIMB Management Review

In the introduction, Secretan writes : “We cannot continue to separate the three components of Heart, Mind, and Bottom Line if we wish to develop high performance individuals and organisations and make work fun again. Only by integrating all three can we help people evolve at the personal level, thus empowering hem to create  enlightened teams and therefore transform their organisations. Through this integration, we can create organisations that inspire the soul and therefore the planet.” He cites a plethora of cases to bear this observation out.

Managing Creativity For Corporate Excellance By Pn Rastogi : Macmillan India, 1996., Nina Jacob Jun 1996

Managing Creativity For Corporate Excellance By Pn Rastogi : Macmillan India, 1996., Nina Jacob

IIMB Management Review

This particular book has a few sections which are best skipped by readers who are unfamiliar with the subject matter of creativity. Chapter 2 begins, “Creativity has come to be recognized as a valuable resource influenced by competitive factors”. What in effect Rastogi implies is that the capacity o be creative can imbue  an organisation with a competitive edge over its rivals, as is borne out after reading the section entitled “creativity as a competive resource”. For executives who want to outperform their peers, simply having a high need for achievement is not enough. Managers should know how to creatively …

Delayering Organisation Structure, Nina Jacob, V S Mahesh, N M Agrawal Mar 1996

Delayering Organisation Structure, Nina Jacob, V S Mahesh, N M Agrawal

IIMB Management Review

Delayering as a tool for organisational re-structuring has been a concern of both theorists and practitioners for some years now, but analyses of the literature have been inconclusive with respect to its impact on actual performance. Delayering has been conceptualised as the process of removing specific levels from the existing hierarchy of an organisation. The result is a flattening of the organisation’s vertical boundaries, affecting such traditional structural manifestations of hierarchy as span of control, chain of command, and limits of authority.

Shouldn’T Management Processes Be Reengineered, Too?, K B C Saxena Mar 1996

Shouldn’T Management Processes Be Reengineered, Too?, K B C Saxena

IIMB Management Review

When organisations reengineer their business processes, they generally tend to concentrate on operational processes rather than management activities. This is because organisation management is traditionally regarded as a function, rather than a process. Process orientation provides an opportunity to improve organisational performance and has been at the root of organisational improvement philosophies such as ‘total quality management’ (TQM) and ‘business process reengineering’ (BPR). The changing business environment poses challenges to management in terms of better coordination, timeto- market, management control, organisational learning, etc. In order to meet these challenges, it is imperative that process orientation should be extended to management …
