Timing Matters: Applying Musicians’ Insights To Business, Ray Haeng Soo Seol Edd, Barry Van Zyl Mba

Faculty Works

Timing, a critical aspect in social contexts and human cognition, has been extensively studied across diverse fields, such as biology, neuroscience, and business. However, there is a lack of interdisciplinary approaches that offer fresh perspectives on how timing works. Music performance, being inherently temporal in nature, presents a unique opportunity to bridge this gap and explore timing mechanisms in a multifaceted context. This research explores how professional musicians understand and utilize timing in their training and artistic development, and how these insights can be applied to business contexts, bridging the two fields to understand timing more comprehensively. Through a qualitative …

Are Healthcare Stocks A Safe Haven During Covid-19? : An Analysis Of Stock Return And Sector Segmentation Across Developed And Emerging Markets, Attani Tuwatchai

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study examines whether the healthcare sector functioned as a safe haven during the COVID-19 pandemic by analyzing its time-varying correlation with major market indices across developed and emerging economies. Utilizing a multi-method approach—centered on the DCC-GARCH model and supported by OLS regression—the research investigates how health crises and public policy responses influenced sector-level market dynamics. The analysis focuses on three main areas: the evolution of correlation structures before and during the pandemic, the influence of pandemic-related factors on correlation strength, and differences between developed and emerging markets. Although a Probit model was initially applied to estimate the likelihood of …

Money Doesn’T Grow On Trees: How Financial Literacy Is Learned And Developed Within American Childhood, Nate Lewis

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

Financial literacy refers to the ability to process and utilize economic information to make informed decisions for their wellbeing. Given concerning indicators of financial outcomes within the United States, it is crucial to understand how and when strong financial behavior is developed. Efforts to enhance financial education have explored incorporating financial concepts into children’s literature and games. Yet, research indicates that financial literacy is far more rooted in the habits learned from one’s family, despite the emphasis often placed on schooling and socioeconomic status. It is therefore evident that efforts to promote financial literacy must always involve empowering family members …

Prioritize Working On The Business – Not In The Business, Carol Wittmeyer

Business Faculty/Staff Publications

NSRA retailer owners are busy. Buying seasons come and go. Business requirements, such as tax payments, cannot be put off with penalties. Focusing on employees is always a priority for success and they can take time to manage, train and inspire. For example, there are times when employees cannot get to work and owners need to cover the floor, where they often started their careers. Competition is tough, so paying attention to the industry and thinking about important business strategies such as inventory planning and advertising spending have to be a priority. Stores are often open six to seven days …

Remote Work, Social Exchange Theory, And Firm Performance, Christopher Mise

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Since Covid-19 pushed workers out of traditional offices and into a remote setting, many have encouraged continuation of its practice post-pandemic. Academic literature reports that employees are happier working remotely and that organizations can benefit from their outcomes. This potential mutual benefit has led some researchers to posit that social exchange theory (SET) may be explain the relationship. To determine if SET is situationally descriptive, this research includes two studies. The first study investigates whether remote workers report higher SET traits than their counterparts in traditional offices. The study used a survey from a representative sample and found that remote …

‘Within The Reach Of Everyone’: Tracing The Global Strands Of Herrman, Sternbach & Co.’S 1880s Imitation Furs, Laura Johnson

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Long before faux furs became trendy, vegan-friendly materials, weavers and textile designers in eighteenth and nineteenth century Europe developed a range of woven goods that offered the haptic qualities of animal pelts. Surprisingly, given their popularity, little research has focused on imitation fur production and consumption at the turn of the twentieth century and its earlier roots. This paper traces the strands linking a group of textile samples donated by New York merchant H. Herrman, Sternbach & Co. in 1884 to (what is today) the Smithsonian National Museum of American History through connecting threads of global production, innovation, and consumption. …

Government Debt On Money Growth, Inflation, And Real Gdp Growth, Jesse T. Wright Jan 2024

Government Debt On Money Growth, Inflation, And Real Gdp Growth, Jesse T. Wright

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

This study examines the question: how does government debt affect economic growth over time? The results of this research show that low-income countries use inflation, money growth, and borrowing to manage debt. As a group, high-income countries do not, or perhaps cannot, use any of these methods systematically. Theory indicates that countries may turn to money growth and inflation to manage debt levels, and that this in turn decreases growth of gross domestic product. The results of this paper are significant because they suggest that low-income countries use money growth and inflation as an alternative to taxation while simultaneously borrowing …

Predicting Auditor Dismissals With Shareholder Votes On Auditor Ratification Using Data Mining Tools, Xiaoyan Cheng, Wikil Kwak, Yong Shi, Yi Qu

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

In this paper, we revisit the association between shareholder voting on auditor ratification and subsequent auditor changes using data mining approaches as compared to the traditional logit model. Our logit model shows that shareholder voting on auditor ratification is not associated with subsequent auditor dismissals. Although the logit model is widely used to study the relationship between dichotomous observations and influencing factors, machine learning models simulate the structure of the human brain and generate predictions through training. Our data mining tools show that the Support Vector Machine (SVM) model shows the best Area Under ROC (AUC) curve, considering AUC is …

An Investigation Into Academic Clustering Among Division Ii Student Athletes, Michael Monahan, Amit Shah Jan 2024

An Investigation Into Academic Clustering Among Division Ii Student Athletes, Michael Monahan, Amit Shah

Journal of Business, Industry, and Economics

Academic clustering occurs when at least 25% of the student athletes on any given team have the same academic major. In and of itself, academic clustering is neither good nor bad, however there is the temptation for students to gravitate toward a major which is perceived to be easier, to seek to associate only with team members, or to enlist in majors which do not align with their career ambitions. Is it for flexibility and scheduling to choose an academic major to have the least impact on their sport? This study examined the athletic program at a Division II four-year …

This paper is employed a descriptive research design using a survey ques-tionnaire for the respondents. The survey found that respondents are willing to engage in business be-tween one to 10 years after college. The willingness is due to the encouragement from their parents, independent decision-making, building self-confidence and knowledge, and chasing their dreams. However, there are two significant factors that hinder this, including a need for more business investment and experience. The principal attitudes of an entrepreneur include self-control and creativity. Gaining …

The Identity Harmony Model Of Inclusion: Development And Test Of A New Theory, Anne Brafford Jan 2024

The Identity Harmony Model Of Inclusion: Development And Test Of A New Theory, Anne Brafford

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The concept of inclusion holds unrealized potential as a guiding framework for supporting employees of all identities in achieving their potential at work and improving organizational diversity. The underdevelopment of the concept’s definition, theoretical foundation, measures, and expected outcomes has hindered its positive impact. For example, scholarly attention has focused primarily on social identity theories to define inclusion at the group level, leaving other identity types and theories underexplored. To help address these issues, Article One of this two-article dissertation synthesizes identity, self-determination theory (SDT), and inclusion literature to provide a theoretical basis for the new identity harmony model of …

Building A Cybersecurity Compliance Index Of Capabilities To Explore Strategies And Trends That Enhance Decision Making In Organizations, Juanita Dawson

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Decision-makers and company executives are required to provide authoritative and transparent information on behalf of their organizations. In securing an organization’s assets, decision-makers use the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) as a framework to understand cyber compliance. Although the GCI framework has been used across broad domains both domestically and internationally, the framework is considered too broad to help decision-makers in business settings gain the information needed to address the challenges of cyber compliance influencing an organization’s leadership. A key challenge is that decision-makers must often address a class of problems requiring classes of artifacts or tools, rather than a single …
