My dissertation focuses on the Corporate Accelerator (CA) as a firm's organizational artifact that, configured correctly and with the accompanying enabling conditions, can significantly contribute to enhancing a firm’s long-term innovative capability. Using a Critical Realist approach with a mixed-methodology, I describe seven CA mechanisms, four in detail, that emerge from my data collection, from 13 large organizations across 3 continents, as generators of innovative results. I also describe more than 60 new micro foundations that will bolster existing firm dynamic capabilities to enable the amplification of the CA’s innovation benefits. Problem Statement: Midazolam remains the current choice within the practice for premedication in the prevention of emergence delirium, however as research continues there could possibly be a gap between the research and current practice. Throughout the practice of pediatric anesthesia most providers choose to premedicate with midazolam while there may be a more beneficial option of dexmedetomidine.

The increasing use of AI models in investment services has raised concerns about ineffective responses, power disparity, and investor harm caused by emotional disruption. Generative AI-driven investment service providers often fail to address consumer issues quickly, guiding customers through superfluous and meaningless verbiage or professional terminology in infinite loops without providing an option to talk with a human customer service staff. Customers who are “stuck” in ineffective or inaccurate responses from AI agents may waste time for investors, make poor investment or trading decisions, and the platform may profit from investor rational decision-making owing to investors’ emotional disruption.

We examine the effect of CEO marital status on corporate cash holdings. Consistent with the classical agency framework, we find that firms with single CEOs hold more cash compared to otherwise similar firms with married CEOs and that the excess cash held by single CEOs is significantly discounted by shareholders. Our findings survive a battery of tests to ease endogeneity and selection bias, confirming that results are not simply reflecting innate heterogeneity in preferences. Overall, our findings indicate that a variable outside the common firm- and macro-level determinants, CEO marital status, can significantly influence corporate policies.

Credit Risk Correlation And The Cost Of Bank Loans, Siamak Javadi, Theophilus T. Osah

Using several approaches to compute firms’ credit risk correlation, we provide robust empirical evidence that lenders charge higher loan spreads to borrowers with higher credit risk correlation. Consistent with the theoretical literature, we find that the credit risk correlation effect is concentrated in investment-grade firms, driven by tightening lending conditions, and more pronounced for firms with higher rollover risk. We also show that banks whose borrowers have higher average credit risk correlation, have greater default risk themselves. Overall, our results indicate that banks view credit risk correlation as an important risk factor.

This dissertation aims to study the impact of different sources of financial information and corporate policies on outcomes that are relevant to researchers, regulators, finance professionals, financial institutions, and investors.

In the first essay, I show that credit rating change announcements disclose a new form of value-relevant information to the market. Issuer credit rating downgrades (upgrades) inform the market about equity underpricing (overpricing). This is reflected by a significant association between a firm’s downgrade (upgrade) and increase (decrease) in the anomalous stock underpricing (overpricing). The first essay analyzes how institutional investors manage their portfolios in the context of economic policy uncertainty. In my dissertation, I examine how a firm's position in the supply chain information network affects its cyber risk exposure and cyber risk management. First, I document that firms that are more central in the supply chain information network have higher cyber risk exposure. Second, the positive association between firm centrality and cyber risk is mitigated by both the IT governance strength of the focal firm and its supply chain partners. Utilizing systems thinking methodologies and tools, this dissertation explores the complex growth and development challenges faced by the industrial hemp industry in Pennsylvania. Identified were key stakeholders, regulatory barriers, and market forces influencing the industry revealing a misalignment of goals and a lack of stakeholder collaboration as significant impediments. Legal and regulatory frameworks, supply-demand imbalances, and ineffective partnerships emerged as critical factors impacting the industry's future. Recommendations to address misalignments include fostering stakeholder collaboration, improving public-private partnerships, and utilizing interactive planning to address systemic issues to enhance the industry's growth potential.

Understanding The Impact Of Food Insecurity Among First-Generation College Students On The University Of Arkansas Campus, Madison Price, Jennie S. Popp Ph.D., Nathan Paul Kemper, Louise Michelle Hancox

The purpose of this study was to: 1) better understand food insecurity among first-generation college students and how it might differ from that of other college students, and 2) gather opinions from students that may serve as solutions to alleviate food insecurity. This study was conducted with a mixed-methods survey that included both open-ended and closed-ended questions. This survey had 670 responses. Nearly 10% of respondents stated that they were experiencing food insecurity. Almost 18% stated they were first-generation college students. A greater percentage of African American (P = 0.0022) and Hispanic Latino (P < 0.0001) students were first-generation compared to all other students, while a lower percentage (P < 0.0001) of Caucasian students were first-generation compared to other students. The results suggested that first-generation students were more likely to experience nine food insecurity impacts than non first-generation students. Further, both first-generation and non first-generation students indicated low levels of knowledge and/or use of existing resources on the University of Arkansas campus that can help address food insecurity needs. Finally, both first-generation and non first-generation respondents overwhelmingly favored food insecurity solutions centered around expanding access to campus food programs through lower costs and increased awareness of existing campus resources via improved advertising.

This study aimed to understand the factors influencing the graduation rate with honors in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences (Bumpers College) at the University of Arkansas Fayetteville (UAF). Utilizing a data set of 220 Bumpers College Honors graduates from 2004 to 2014, provided by the Office of Strategic Analytics & Insights at UAF, this research investigated several demographic and academic variables to potentially identify predictors of successfully graduating with honors. Runoff from urban surfaces leads to pollution, flashiness, loss of biodiversity, and other symptoms, also known as Urban Stream Syndrome (USS). Streams can be restored in order to combat USS, but most restorations are not monitored, so their long-term effectiveness is unknown. A major objective of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture (UADA) Fruit Breeding program is to improve the texture of blackberry (Rubus subgenus Rubus Watson). Blackberry varieties with improved fruit firmness transport and store well and may maintain superior quality under challenging postharvest conditions than softer varieties. Increased firmness may also make cultivars less susceptible to red drupelet reversion (RDR), a postharvest disorder of blackberries in which fully black drupelets revert to red after harvest.
